ABOUT the Musical, 'A Chorus Line':
The song, What I Did For Love, is one of the main numbers from this musical. A Chorus Line is a musical about Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line. The book was authored by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante, lyrics were written by Edward Kleban, and music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch.
With nineteen main characters, it is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers.
The original Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Buffalo, N.Y. native Michael Bennett, was an unprecedented box office and critical hit, receiving 12 Tony Award nominations and winning nine of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running production in Broadway history up to that time. It remains the longest running Broadway musical originally produced in the United States, and the fourth longest-running Broadway show ever. The show has enjoyed many successful productions worldwide and was revived on Broadway in 2006.

Sadly, unsophistication is the norm now a days. People are no longer able to appreciate overwhelmingly great talent like this. At least some of her greatness has been recorded. Imagine if it all died with her.

I heard a story told by Barbara Streisand where she had got a free ticket for her Mother and friends to see Barbara in Las Vegas. According to Barbara, her mother said, "we cant go, we already have tickets for Shirley Bassey and would much rather see her" ! -- In another Hotel in Vegas on the same night ! ! !
I'll give Barbra one thing; she's honest! Not many artists would pay this type of tribute to another artist. Barbra was also asked many years ago if she would pay to see any other artist, and she said, yes, Shirley Bassey.
Both singers have top tier voices. But, Shirley really outshines in a live concert setting because she is more extroverted. She is so sure of her vocals she can spend more time with her wonderful eye, hand, & body movements to help tell the story of what she is sings. When first starting out she was taught from veterans of the vaudville era. She is also a very emotional singer, and it comes through in every song she sings. Shirley would have made a great actress, but back in the day it was not easy for a mixed race person to get into the business. After a while she gave that dream up, and decided to concentrate on her music and to give the best live concerts and TV Specials that she could. And, she did just that..
That power and control is a lost art...over a 4min song flawless and perfect execution...Dame Shirley Bassey ❤

The age of such singers/ performers is over. There was a golden age of popular music in the 20th Century. Shirley belongs to the Elite of such people. For all the moments of joy she gave her audiences I wish her double that joy. Thank you for this video.

I'm from the USA, and I second your comment! It's unfortunate, but because Shirley was born before WWII, and thus before the CZcams generation, so many young listeners outside of the UK don't know who she is unless you reference James Bond. Something else that urks me is when you look at the 'Best Vocalist' websites and singers like Britney Spears are ranked higher! Common! I understand that the younger generation doesn't relate to the amazing vocal abilities and qualities of Shirley Bassey, but the professionals who understand musical attributes should no better. They classify her as the 'Belter', but most fans know of how she can sing a simple lullaby beautifully with superbly rich and smooth sounds. But, thankfully to CZcams, more and more of the younger generation who are looking for great vocalists of the past stumble on to Shirley, and most become fans!

Many of the singer's of Shirley's generation don't even know what that is. I saw an interview with Aretha Franklin a few months ago and the interviewer asked her if she had ever used Auto Tune. Her Answer: What is that? I'm sure it's the same way with Shirley. They had to sing the old fashion way, and by practicing with grueling vocal excercises on a regular basis to make perfect. And, It has worked for both of these great ladies of music.

She was a tremendous talent along with Minnie Ripperton and Marion Anderson (google them please). These African American women did not get her just due because she came during a time when African American singers did receive much honor. Remember it took Patti Labelle and Diana Ross decades you receive Grammy honors. Now they give Grammy awards away like water.
The great thing about Dame Shirley Bassey is that she still has retained much of her amazing vocal abilities, now in her 80's. Her voice has aged like fine wine, that's for sure. Yes, she is lucky to be the only person within her family who had this natural talent, but that only goes so far. (Exception: Her older brother could hold a tune, but nothing like Shirley). She still performs grueling vocal exercises on a regular basis, as she is always preparing for her next performance. Although Shirley no longer tours around the world, she still will perform in special events, TV Shows, or charities. She has also retained her amazing beauty! I really wish some of the new singers today would pick some of this type material and really saying rather than talk or rather than having music in the background that just overshadows there a voice even if they had a voice that could be overshadowed it's usually over shadowed I don't understand why people don't listen to this play music and see that it's much better

Engelbert is also one of my favorite singer/entertainers and I've seen him perform here in the USA many times. I have always enjoyed Shirley's rendition of this song as well, and each artist brings their own talents to the table for every song they have recorded and/or performed over the past 5+ decades. This world is big enough for many artists to place their own stamp on classic songs like this.

I fell in love with her when l was 25, in 1976, and my partner of 30 years, whom l had only met weeks earlier, took me to meet a friend who was a Bassey fan. Since then l have seen her live many times in London and Boston, where in the late 80s l did her makeup. Her duet with Robert Goulet of "You Don't Send Me Flowers' is heartbreaking.
Awesome and beautiful and loved her cool outfit! Ending pose was like a butterfly or flower.
