- Today we are starting to prep our kitchen for our upcoming kitchen renovation! We officially picked our countertops & sink (watch the last vlog if you missed it → • VLOG 28 | KITCHEN RENO... ) & we are also replacing some of the old rusty hinges to refresh our cabinets. Another big thing on our todo list is to find appliances, we are going with an induction cooktop, and it's totally new to us, so we had to spend some time looking into that. *I’m so happy to see y’all as excited about the upcoming Kitchen Renovation as we are!! It’s been a long time coming, but I can envision it now, and it’s going to be worth the wait!! Also… y’all know our home, so I’d love to hear your thoughts & ideas on what to paint our cabinets? I’ve been thinking white for the litter cabinets, and evergreen fog (same as our living room built ins) for the island - but feeling unsure about the white now? 🤗 And THANK YOU for choosing to be here with us today! Painting cabinets is a huge job. White is so overdone. What about using either, Evergreen fog for all of them, or Pale Oak instead of white? Or even, another accent color...black or a dark neutral.
I think the white cabinets and evergreen fog island makes perfect sense because it'll mirror the fireplace/built-ins wall on the opposite side. But you could easily just reverse it and have evergreen fog uppers and a stark white island. Either way is going to tie into the already existing walls and will look amazing whichever way you decide to go.
I love the idea of using the evergreen fog on your lower cabinets to tie your kitchen and living room together. And having the upper cabinets be white will keep it light, bright and airy!
White is still the best as it opens up the space.
I like that evergreen you have in your living room. Yeah, you probably should sand the doors down to make it smooth and the edges. Are you going to paint the cabinets all one color (evergreen)? And are guys doing the island a different color??

I just watched a video the other day and they had the same type of cabinets as you . The peeling on the side of your cabinet is a laminate wrap. If you get a heat gun, it will peel straight off without damaging the cabinet underneath. They then painted the cabinets and it looked awesome. Hope this helps😊
We updated our kitchen 4 yrs. we painted our oak cabinets white on the uppers and med warm gray on the lower. We got new granite countertops and put up a backsplash. We also put in a new sink and lighting. Along with updating all our appliances.it looks like a different kitchen. We love it. You will be so happy with your updates. Our kitchen was about the same age of yours when we did the renovations. We did headboard on the ends of the cabinets.
You just need one soft close per door. We bought cabinets from IKEA and that’s what was enclosed with the hardware
There are so many channels on CZcams about redoing kitchen cabinets, also the flipping channels. You guys are so talented at all of it, I think you can do anything you set your mind to and save a bunch of money.

Hey Amanda and Kyle my husband is a contractor perferfessionl painter. He said it looks like it's the laminet is cracking and peeling off of your cabinetry. He said fill it with wood putty and sand it smooth. Make sure to use kiltz oil base to prime and sand them and they will come out so smooth. Paint them with cabinet X paint and it works best. Benjamin Moore paint. I hope this will help you. If you have any questions for my husband just message me. He'll be happy to answer your questions. 😊 The cabinet that is really peeling badly on the sides. My husband said all you can do is peeling it off and put white contact paper over it and paint over the contact paper. You could also buy a very thin piece of ply wood and and use liquid nails to hold it to the side of the cabinet. Just a suggestion

Kilee Rainbow just redid her kitchen and she worked with a company that sent her all new cabinet and drawer front. Her kitchen came out beautiful.

As far as the cracks in the paint....You first need to wash the cabinets down w like Dawn or a TSP cleaner, then use a clean cloth and clean water, and wash off soap /tsp....allow to dry. Do a soft sand all of the cabinets for paint adhesion, but also use wood filler on the cracks, allow to dry, and sand smooth. Wash all the dust off and you're ready for paint.😊

Bosch is one of the best manufacturers of electric appliances. I live in Greece and all my kitchen appliances are Bosch. I'm so excited to see the kitchen reno! I think I'm #teamKyle on the glass door! As for the cabinets, you can find a lot of CZcams channels that renovate or flip furniture.
Awesome hanging with you guys. Great to go on the journey with you both. Love the instant progress with the new hinges. I suspect you will need to remove the peeling vinyl on the side of the cupboard completely and iron on a new panel. Which is a pain however Kyle you have the skills to do it. Go team! No 1 fan 🇦🇺
I just put a Bosch induction stovetop in my home. Didn't know you needed your pots to be special, was told to use a magnet to test if the pots will work or not. If the magnet sticks to your pots, then you're good to go. Love it!!! The water boils in 1 minute and the top is still cool to the touch which is great with my grandkids around the house.

Bosch is fenomenal! I have a lot of Bosch appliances, and the time we bought another brand (Samsung) we deeply regret it. Also, don’t be afraid of induction. Nowadays most of the cookware is good for these stoves. I’ve been using it for more than 20 years, and I really like it. It will take you some time to get used to it, but it is great.
I would use an end panel on the end cabinet that’s peeling. I would use Bondo wood filler on the door fronts with cracks/imperfections then sand them smooth.

The paint on the cabinets - it might be worthwhile checking the type of paint used - ie., is it an oil-based or a water-based paint? If it's oil-based, you may need to strip all the paint off before beginning to apply any new paint layers. And, on that surface where the paint is flaking off, it looks like the cabinet base material (wood?) wasn't properly prepared for paint. Anyway, I hope that none of these potential problems will occur. Why? Because I love watching you two work your magic in your new home.

Always always go to the small mom and pop shops, especially for Appliances! Hubs repaired appliances for years, and the big box stores get the low quality appliances. We just replaced our fridge, oven(gas, and Amanda I feel your pain) and dishwasher with the GE cafe series. Freaking love them. And went to put local Appliance store. One thing I do recommend is getting an extended warranty for sure. Can’t wait for the makeover🥰Dorene Weiss

I had peeling on some of the sides of my cabinets so I covered all exposed areas with bead board, but that isn’t everyone’s aesthetic. You might be able to peel it off and then do a level coat of joint compound sanded smooth prior to priming and painting or even fine cabinet vinyl to replace what is there.
So happy for you will be fun to watch your vision come together.

As someone who just completely gutted their kitchen… I very much hope your kitchen doesn’t take too long. As fellow DIYers, it took us 5 months to complete ours and that was October-February of this year. I highly suggest a cooktop from IKEA. I absolutely love mine! It has a power boost setting and boils my water in less than a minute + it was very reasonably priced!
So looking forward too the transformation it’s going too be beautiful
For your cabinets, you can use a hairdryer to peel that laminate off (if they’re like mine). Then paint away!

I’m so excited for both of you and can’t wait to see the finished kitchen. We just got new granite countertops from Home Depot and a new sink and they look amazing! We used the Pebble Brown Beyond paint on our lower cabinets that we I saw you use and the Bright White Beyond paint on our uppers. I can’t stay out of the kitchen just looking at it!🤣🤭🤗 I’m so glad I saw your video. It’s a great color!!

I just wanted to add my 2 cents regarding the sink....our kitchen was completely gutted and remodeled. We've been living with our SQUARE sink , with all the accessories, since July 2022 We never use them and I hate the lip that sticks out to place them on. ( My husband cooks atleasr 1 big meal a day.) Love the idea regarding replacing the hindges...one at at time!! So glad y'all are going with the counter tops you chose. Still wish we'd cut costs somewhere else and gone with them. I know your reno is going to look great. Thanks for taking us along. CABINETS. I love your colors you're thing off. Maybe chose a neutral or warmer white that compliments the green???
That might be a good compromise on the white… choosing a warm white… still bright, but not stark

This was such a great video!! I think white is always timeless, and would be beautiful cabinets with the light countertops. You can always add pops of all different colors with flowers & vases, your wooden cutting boards, the pots & pans while cooking, the pictures in the area. I loved the video at 16:57 - 17:12!! Y’all were so happy about one thing in the budget being a savings. Also when Kyle said Bye at the end of the video. You two work so great together!! Fun! Fun! Although for sure it is a lot of hard work renovating and making over rooms.

Can not wait until the kitchen refurb is on the way. Not sure if you have it over there but in the UK you can just get your kitchen facia wrapped, it’s kinda like a heavy duty type of plastic (think car decal wrapping but for kitchens), saves on the painting, it’s heavy duty and a lot cheaper than replacing all cupboards etc xx

We redid our kitchen a couple of years ago and put in quartz, we cut on it, they have held up like new!! We absolutely love them!!
We had a Bosch dishwasher in our old house, and it was amazing! Was so quiet
Amanda & Kyle remolding is a nightmare and expensive we did are kitchen floor and that was all we could afford to do. I so need cabent doors and a new counter top would be so nice.
As for the end cabent were it is peeling off I would finish killing it all sand it and then just paint it white.

We used Everbuilt Soft Close Door Dampers (around $8 at HD), you only need one per cabinet door, no changes to the hinges and have held up for over 10 years.

ANY cookware that will react to a magnet will work on induction.Induction is great. Cast iron, enameled cast iron, stainless steel is great. I have found really nice cookware at Home Goods and Marshall's that has the induction emblem on the bottom. Not difficult and you do not need to spent crazy $$$.

We had a solid door in our basement and I really wanted to let light into the dreary space so we took the odd sized door to a local kitchen/lumber/door store and they added a window to the door while we shopped. $100 bucks and French door in less than an hour!

Absolutely agree on the sink with curved edges. I had one large sink with hard edges and it WAS a pain to clean. Fat and grease stayed in the edge and was a pain to scrub clean.

I am glad you are closer to getting it started. Ha ha, Kyle's comments that we will run into issues are so true. At least when you plan that it's going to happen when it does, you are not surprised. That is how we tackle it. We don't have bad luck, it's just our luck. Even as simple as putting shelves together, we are the ones who get one with a missing screw. Can't wait to see the process. At least the decisions are made with all the appliances, sink and countertop. Let's go!!
