In this video, we'll provide real data on the cost of kitchen renovations in California, categorized into low-end, mid-range, and high-end tiers. We'll also discuss the expected return on investment in terms of added home equity. It's important to note that the kitchen is typically the most expensive room to remodel, and labor costs vary by location. Regardless of where you live, these numbers can serve as a general guideline. We assume your current kitchen is at least 10 years old and requires a complete cosmetic refresh, including replacing various elements. The size of your kitchen should fall within the range of 145-160 square feet, with larger kitchens potentially incurring higher costs.
A low-end kitchen renovation can still yield amazing results and greatly improve the aesthetics and functionality compared to the old kitchen. It involves using mostly off-the-shelf materials like particle board cabinets, basic countertops like Caesarstone quartz or butcher block, simple tile backsplash, builder-grade sink and faucet, laminate or vinyl flooring, and budget-friendly appliances. The speaker personally did a low-end renovation in the Bay Area and has been very satisfied with the outcome.
Moving on to a mid-level kitchen remodel, it entails better-quality cabinets, often made of wood, though still prefabricated. Countertop options expand to include basic granite or quartz slabs, customized to fit the dimensions. Engineered hardwood flooring is a popular choice, and there are generally higher-quality finishes for light and plumbing fixtures, as well as slightly fancier appliances.
High-end kitchens feature the finest materials and finishes, such as custom wood cabinetry, natural stone countertops like marble or quartzite, more intricate backsplash tiles or stone slabs, terrazzo or hardwood flooring, high-end appliances from brands like Wolf or Sub-Zero, a large apron-front sink, solid brass faucet, and designer pendant lights.
By mixing low-end and high-end materials, you can achieve your desired kitchen look while staying within budget. Taking on the installation yourself can save 50% or more on the total project cost. For example, in a personal kitchen remodel, the homeowner installed Ikea cabinets with solid wood fronts and prefab caesarstone quartz countertops, using mostly low-end materials except for engineered hardwood floors. However, it's important to note that additional costs may arise if you choose to do mechanical upgrades or structural changes, such as relocating plumbing, adding a gas line, changing electrical wiring, or making structural modifications. These factors go beyond cosmetic finishes and can impact the overall expenses.

Maybe. Their expenses have gone up a lot in the last 3 years. We need more people in the trades so there is more price competitiveness.

I was quoted 50-70k just to replace cabinets, countertops, and backsplash with medium grade non custom materials with no change to plumbing or electrical and not including new appliances for a small 10x10 kitchen! Damn maybe I need to learn to DIY this since raw materials only cost 10k at most @@brandon-built

@@GuitarsAndSynths Its true the materials will only cost you 10-20k. If you're relatively handy and have some spare time then you should go for it. You can learn everything on CZcams. I DIY'd my kitchen reno about 6 years ago and I still love it.
