So here's the thing, the president does have some extra immunity privileges that the rest of us don't. The duties of the office requires open discussion / debates / considerations of a wide range of actions and policies. Some (many?) will be deemed illegal upon review.... which would normally trigger a charge of conspiracy to commit said crime. Which is silly. The president must be able to determine if something is legal or not without being guilty of conspiracy to commit that illegal act.
Military actions are a prime example here. Having a wide range of military plans ready to go is essential to national security. Acting on those plans without meeting very specific rules of engagement is a war crime. But we still need those conversations to take place without it being a conspiracy to commit war crimes.
Now, there's obviously limits here. The president can't actually act on anything illegal - even if they in good faith think it is legal. They absolutely can't do anything knowing it's illegal.
This is where the orange buffoon is off his rocker. He's taken reasonable executive privilege (which is a thing) and pushed it to cartoon villain levels of stupid. More specifically, he's trying to apply it to actions not related to the duties of the office. So any leeway given to president Trump does not apply to candidate Trump by definition. Keeping in mind that any leeway given stops at "committing crime."
