Great video - I hadn't considered overdoing the ducking under. Thanks!

Sometimes I struggle with getting my head out the way when I'm pressing the weight. This happened back in sept at the meet. I caught myself right on the chin on the way up. What are some good tips to avoid that? I'm so focused on keeping the bar close and over my body but sometimes its too close.

Do you press with a layback? If not, pressing with one will help you get your head out of the way. We made a video about this a few weeks back: czcams.com/video/Qt9alKQ7l6o/video.html. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

@@atlantabarbell8295 I do press with a layback. Especially on the heavier lifts because I like to take advantage of the dip. But sometimes when I go into my layback my arms get too far away from me. So I guess I struggle with finding that balance of using the layback but not letting the bar get too far out from my body.

@@walkerdumontj If anything, the bar should move closer to you and down when you use a layback. My guess is that there is something wrong with your rack position - either too wide a grip or elbows flaring/otherwise not in front of the bar - that is causing the bounce to go away from you and not towards. You have to hold the bar in close so the elbows stay in front. If the elbows don't stay in front, you've got a press that's going to get away from you. Is it getting away from you or is it too close? I'm a little confused between the two comments.

@@atlantabarbell8295 That makes sense. I have noticed I have a problem with my elbows flaring out on the press. My biggest issue is the bar getting away from me. Almost all of my missed attempts have been because the bar gets too far away from my body. To compensate for that I try to bring the bar in closer and that is when I run into issues with my head being in the way. I think I lose some of my layback when I'm trying to keep the bar close, and my head gets into the equation. Now I think the start of all the issues may be my elbows flaring out on the press. I've adjusted to take what I consider a narrow grip, hands line up about just outside of shoulder width.
