In this video I am demonstrating an exercise of which I think it's one of the best to train these points:
Finger independence; playing efficient, thuis making no unnecessary movements, and minimizing pressure needed to fret a note.
Play all five examples, and you'll surely see lots of benefits into your own playing! - Jak na to + styl
Another annoying exercise:
1. Drop your pick into the guitar hole
2. Now try to get it out of it.
Paul Andrew Mfw I store my picks in my guitar so I don’t lose them
one time I got it in there so bad I had to remove my strings
@@Zentropy8 damn, i can't even imagine how frustrated you were. why did you follow Paul Andrew exercise?
Paul Andrew this is why electric guitar players are soo lucky not because they can shred like a god nope because they aint got holes actually its worse cuz once you drop your pic on the rug its gone forever lel litrally lost a pic as i dropped it and looked for 5 mins till i found it
I did that twice.. It came out after 5 seconds
The slower you play, the faster you learn.
Im here
This one thing took me eight years to learn.
Not really
@@serph2951
lol there's always a "not really" guy
Bruh thats really me
Me: Ha! That doesnt look annoying or hard.
Me (30 mins later): FINGERS, I WILL DESTROY YOU FOR DISOBEYING ME!!!
😂🤣
Very accurate
BAHAHA ikr, I actually hit my own fingers to the wall when I get I impatient XD
No joke 😆, the cramps THO 😓😆
I was literally yelling at my fingers "Wtf are you doing!!" 🤣🤣
A Lot of guitar youtubers have made a "things i wish i knew, while learning guitar" types of videos. This comment segment reminds me, of an essentiel piece of advice rarely included: Go easy om yourself while learning!! If something is very challenging, it is all the more important to take a Deep breath, and try to let go of the frustration. You will get it right in due time! Breath and focus my friend. you're doing just fine. 😊
Thanks so much man, I always keep going but I’m very hard on myself!
Totally wrong, relentless self-loathing whilst grinding your teeth is the way to go!
love ur words and love u♥️
Wise words!
thanks king!
never realized how shitty my alternate picking was until I tried this
I'm the opposite my alternate picking pretty decent and clean left hand is sloppy and uncoordinated for me.
@@dooterscoots2901 same
@@dooterscoots2901 What do you mean by "clean left hand" D:?
@@dooterscoots2901 same. I need better technique
never realized how shitty my fingers were until i tried this.
I can't believe how difficult this is! My pinky has a mind of its own.
cool, now try it with distortion
Just try an practice it until you dominate it. Pratice makes you perfect.
i just dont understand you people. The only way you have that level of problems with your pinky is if you literally avoid using it. Well.. duh.. you didnt train it and now yo ucant use it. Go practice
my pinky keeps lifting everytime I try to do this naturally as well, its frustrating as hell
Lift your pinky enough that the note mutes, but still keep some tension on the string (don't release it completely), that might help.
At the age of seventy I picked my guitar back up this January after a decades long hiatus; my granddaughter had received a guitar as a gift and asked if I could help her get started. So that's what we're doing, two newbies traveling together. This exercise looked, and initially felt, impossible. After about ten or fifteen practice sessions using this as part of my warm-up, I am just starting to get it. Hang in there.
Same, at 75, but with a 10 yr old violinist who prefers Bach. ME: let's learn the Kreutzer Etude 13 together! It will be fun! HER: I already know it. ME: No prob, I'll learn it .... HER, smiling: Ummm, Ok! ... One week later... ME: Hey, let's try some Aurora covers?

When you’re trying to teach an exercise and end up teaching the stranger things theme song
I just know how to make it a little more appealing ;-)
thought it was more twilightzone'ish
cmdraftbrn it's literally the stranger things theme
YES!
Cmaj7 (with an extra note added) is the actual chord played in the intro
0:12 Hmmm... A "finger excercise" that cause "pain in the butt" you say... I don't like the sound of this.
Almir Fatkhiev oh god
You must be doing it wrong.
Hot 88s Sorry, I'm quite a newbie, when it comes fingers and butts.
you're reading too much into it

I have played guitar most of my life. These are some of the best exercises I have ever seen. Well thought out and definitely turn up the quality of any guitar player's performance. Remember: If it was easy, everyone would do it.
“Try to not move your ringfinger.”
My pinky when any other finger moves: *flips the F triple sharp out*
Your voice is awkwardly relaxing
bajozeroar why is it awkward? Just because it's cool to say?
Exactly, its a great word I think
bajozeroar well but it still has a meaning and a context to be used in... I found his voice relaxing as well, but I don't get the awkward part
Check ASMR vids if you're into that sort of thing - some are cheesy AF, but a lot are really good - I find the unintentional ones the best.
His voice reminds me of tore from tc
"I really have to use all my brain power to stop my middle finger from moving."
I do not have that much brain power.
feel for you bro
I'm on the other spectrum of this. I CAN'T MOVE MY RING FINGER its glued, it's impossible. My middle finger goes fine, my pinky as well. My ring finger? He is a stubborn one...
♥️
It is strange to look at a finger and say move and it doesn’t/can’t /won’t until it does. Thanks to Paul and many others.
i've never laughed maniacally while trying to learn something new...send help
Andrew Ewing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can feel my stress lvls rising just from watching this.
It's so hard to practice this without thinking about Eleven.
In my opinion the best thing about a guitar is how it teaches you about yourself...
how is that??
@@moon-nghmsh cause the best thing about learning any instrument, is that the moment you get the hang of it, you'll start noticing exactly how you learn best, and what works for you, or what you like or don't like. + everything you practice, is going to be a result. maybe not immediate, but you'll improve everytime you play
@@sploomfussy makes sense actually
Holy fudge.... 2 minutes in to this exersice and my hand ran away...
You may shut up😈😈😼😼
Now that's proper teaching. Thank you, you're hired.
is my brain really in charge of that pinky? damn thats hard
I played for over 10 years without really using my pinky for anything other than absolute basics. That's how hard it is.
I pity your pinky...

The first exercise alone - never felt so uncoordinated before. BACK to practice! Thanks for sharing : ) Cheers!
Wow! That Exercise improved my technique and my exercising pretty much instantly! Very Intense and rewarding. Big thank you from 🇩🇪
"Here's how I describe this excercise: It hurts" Thanks so much for this Paul. Thanks so much.
Thank you , I will give these exercises serious effort since I have been searching for what will bring back the serious use of my fretting and lead playing because I lost both when I had a stroke in June . I can play some single notes and some simple chords but My goal is to be able to play everything and I just bought a classical guitar so I could learn fingerstyle playing
Good for you Buddy. The human will is a powerful thing. You will do it. All the best. Love and peace to you.
You should narrate a book because your voice is so calming.
3:58 sounds like avatar ang the last air bender end of show/touchy moments
Lol you'e right
With 'Up next on Avatar'
And fast played it sounds like Stranger Things
Damn right
you're right. It sounds like "The Avatar's Love"
This one is a little hard for me since I'm only 3 days into playing lol but I've been working on the "spider walk" exercise because I dont have to pick with it and i can barely make it through all the strings before my hand literally checks out on me lmao.
How’s it going now?
I just cried watching this, that is extremely hard.
Getting a real Stranger Things vibe from that arpeggio
Yep! Stranger Things uses these exact notes... A Cmaj7 arpeggio. So for the new season start your binging with a guitar on your lap and play along ;)
What the fuck Stranger Things is?
vic rattlehead only one of the best series out there right now...(netflix)
The Stranger Things melody is a Cmaj7 arp in third inversion.
SAMEEEEE
My pinky does not want to obey, and always lifts up. I never noticed how inefficient my pinky was being before this exercise, so thank you. I will be adding this exercise to my daily routine.
What other daily exercises do you recommend?
how are u 2 years later?
Yo bro! That's one of the best tutorial I've seen so far.
Love how you passionately teach step by step and make it easy.
Thank you!
I was taught this exercise back in 2005, still doing it til today but in different forms of chords. My insight was: this is a good and musical way to practice picking and fingering. Thanks! This is a good reminder and added variety. Doing some minor form with 5th to 2nd strings should help too.
The fingers are finally staying closer to their proper positions with far less movement, and less pressure. Thanks for the practice tips. Keep the fingers right there to keep the strings muted. Great Exercise.
I tried this and checked the comments to see if people were having as much trouble as I was with it. Yep. I can see how this will help with my playing though!
As a drummer I was taught about finger banding. You can train your way out of it but it's something everyone will have to deal with at some point. It is one of the most frustrating things in the world to deal with but as a new guitarist I am looking forward.. it may even help my "dead left hand" on the kit!

Thank you Paul, another great lesson. You brilliantly put enough theory and exercise into this lesson that could in time turn one into a guitarist.
I hate this exercise but I am so grateful that you've shown the world. After years of playing I never knew I could be temporarily defeated by such an exercise. I shall overcome this too, thanks brother Paul

Wow Paul! Great exercise. When I saw this, I thought I knew what you were going to do, but this is much better! You are a great player, and more importantly in my opinion, a great teacher. Keep up the good work.
thx for this , in just two week i take good habit and my playing is muuuuuch better !!! thx !!
Love the little things u put in there :) So many small but important concepts of good guitar play in just one seemingly simple riff
I've been playing for years, but I still feel so clumsy ... great job Paul
this exercise was one of the best videos 2017 has given me :)
This is a great instruction for daily exercise - precious. Thanks!!!
Paul, it's a really good thing that you described the sequence of exercises in that low, calm voice that your use for all your lessons. That helped me to relax when I went to my guitar to try them. Otherwise, I probably would've started out frustrated!
But you're right, those are excellent exercises to master, in order to master the finger coordination muscle memory. Thanks, dude!
Holy moly! I played for about 15 or so years then took a 17 year break and picking it up again. This time around, I'm trying to learn good techniques and to use my pinky. This is a monster exercise! Thank you so much!! Subscribed!
Thanks a ton for a *very* useful exercise! This just became part of my daily routine
The exercise that helped me the most with finger interdependency and technique is the simple 1234 exercise. 1234 symbolizing your 4 fretting fingers you simply play it vertically and moving up the fret board. You do every possible combination eg. 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432. Then you start with your 2nd finger 2134, 2143 and so on.
Your videos are always concise and to the point. Great job keep it up!
This is a very helpful lesson, thank you for sharing!
OK, message received. I will practice my instrument(s), arpeggios, and scales with focus on technique. Thank you.
Sounds like the “stranger things” synth line cool
Paul, I really enjoy your tutorials, your calm and business like. A brief background, I am 66 have been playing for three yrs. now. Started because I spent 2 yrs. in bed stricken by a very rare nerve condition that basically paralyzed my legs and arms. Being able to walk a little bit I needed to do something about my hands. I grew up with rock and roll, someone gave me a cheap guitar, spent hours ( and still do ) practicing until the fingers started to move. I’m so grateful to the Lord first and the guitar second, now your added to the list. Its been and still is a very rough road, but it is now much more pleasant. With your help on technique and above all psychologically giving me new goals on theory etc. life continues to be pleasant, thanks. By the way just learned Far and Away by the Led
This is so awesome! I feel it working so many different things all at once. I'm gonna be using this all the time, thanks a lot!
Stranger Things anyone?
Anyone? You mean like more than a half of the comment section?!
What a sham! I love that show but the intro riff needs to go develop itself.
Indeedo!

Holy s..t, you're damn right! :D
Some masterful pinky control. Definitely one for practicing with a metronome.
You are a good teacher Paul. Continue what you do and you are helping a lot of beginners and intermediate players become professionals someday. Saludos to you!
I've tried it's really improved thank you Paul💖
C'est un exercice très efficace, merci beaucoup de nous l'avoir fait découvrir 😉👍
Hi there bro. I'm practicing since a year or so.learning songs from CZcams. I like trying out exercises rather than the song riffs. My pinky finger has a controlling problem and been worrying how to get it right . Yes, been making a mistake of lifting the finger completely from the strings . Gonna include this exercise from tomorrow. Big thanks for supporting rookies like myself.

Wat zet je toch een leuke lesjes op youtube. Leuk gemonteerd en ook nog in perfect engels. Ik ben fan. Thanks.

I have slowly repeated this for five months, and now the guitar salesman keeps asking me when I will buy this guitar.
Thanks for posting this!
Thank you so much from 🇮🇩, Davids!
Simultaneously loving and hating this at the same time!
Why you do this to me? I thought we were friends *unfriends guitar*
This is really great, thanks Paul
Will definitely be practicing this. Thank you.
Sometimes my pinky and ringfinger act like they are glued together, driving me crazy.
That's because they share the same tendon. All the other fingers have their own tendon. Concentrated practice, starting at a DEADLY SLOW pace, will fix it, eventually.
Excellent exercise for developing finger independence. I noticed something 5 min. into, that should help beginners...try just touching the adjacent strings, then pluck string by string for a couple of times softly , that is your signal to the fretting hand...no confusion, cuts out the middle man (eyes and the brain) . Not my native language so I hope I came through. And thank you mr. Davids, will support on Patreon and even enroll for a beginners course! Love to all from the lockdown.
Thank you very much for your video/lessons all the very best!!!!
Thanks Paul! This tutorial is very helpful...I am using it for practice
good video,helping me alot

Serious question...i need help. I'm a classical fingerstyle player, I was very good until I tragically severed muscle, tendon, and nerves in my left hand in an accident...resulting in my first 3 fingers numb...ive worked hard and 3 surgeries later plus 9 years of work I have the strength but still have no ability to use or create muscle memory with the damage....
Joker 91st wtf?
from today i will start warmups so i dont get tendon
Human organism is insanely powerful. If you train more I'm sure you will get your muscle memory back and heal completely.
after 9 years chances are pretty low.
Joker 91st Keep fighting!! The ability to play the guitar is worth it!!
Man keep fighting for it and I'm sure you've heard the stories about the likes of Tony iommi and Les Paul and the jazz player that damaged his fingers in a fire whose name escapes me. Guitar Blend have a great video titled "what's your excuse" on CZcams I'm sure you'd like if you haven't seen it already. Best of luck and keep at it, don't let the distance you've come be in vain.
Thanks for the great advice and tip.
