Hi friends! Join me for a relaxing, soft-spoken cleaning and restoration of one of the greatest keyboards ever made: the legendary IBM Model M! This is the type of keyboard that I grew up with, and I was lucky enough to snag one in a lot of old electronics I picked up. It was pretty grimy to start with, but as you'll see over the course of this video, it cleaned up remarkably well! A huge thanks to this channel's FUS RO+ tier supporters on Patreon and CZcams memberships who voted for this as June 2023's Patrons' Pick/Members' Choice video!
ASMR triggers include ear-to-ear soft speaking, incidental mouth sounds, clicking, close attention, and typing sounds. I recommend listening with headphones for the best experience! 🎧

WHAT IS ASMR? 👨🏫
---------------------------------------------------
My videos are designed to trigger a relaxing feeling called ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). ASMR is a particular sensation that some people experience when they hear quiet sounds like whispering and soft speaking or watch certain actions like slow hand motions. ASMR is often described as a pleasant tingling on the head and neck, accompanied by a feeling of deep calm and mild euphoria. Many people watch ASMR videos to relax and manage anxiety, stress, or insomnia. To learn more about ASMR, check out asmruniversity.com/about-asmr.... - Věda a technologie
Hi friends! I hope you enjoy watching this month's Patrons' Pick/Members' Choice vid as much as I enjoyed making it! I'm typing this very comment on my beautiful new-old Model M! 😊 Speaking of beautiful things, you can save 10% on beautiful graphic tees and more from this video's sponsor, INTO THE AM, using my link! bit.ly/INTOTHEAM-theASMRnerd
I could not imagine the noise generated by an entire keyboarding class or a large office setting of these!!! Great nostalgic video Nick. I can't wait to see what you have next.
If I knew there was gonna be this type of hype over vintage keyboards. I would've kept my old 1994 one.
Same 😂 It's tough, some vintage tech becomes highly desirable, while other stuff remains junk in the dust bin of history. I wish my parents had kept our old one, but alas!
@@theASMRnerd looking back you're like "omg I wish I had known not to throw out those 5 things." lol
That looks REALLY familiar! Damn, now I feel like spelunking the old basement to look for old tech like some sort of Jawa-esque scrap collector.
You should!! Classic IBM Model Ms in good shape can easily fetch over $100, $200+ for older or rarer models. Or restore it for yourself and relive the glory days :D
This is one of few ASMR videos that I can't fall asleep to. It's too interesting to miss haha
I always try to walk the line between interesting and relaxing! Maybe you can sleep to the later parts of the video where I'm replacing keycaps and not talking much.
You could probably use this video if you're anxious during the day but still need to stay awake
Wow.... Nostalgia! This was my 2nd keyboard. My first was part of our old H86 unit.
Boy, I can almost hear the floppy drive whirring.
Nice find!
Unicomp did buy out the old machinery after IBM/Lexmark stopped making them, however their "New Model M" flagships use new machinery that produces higher quality parts that aren't affected by the issues the Lexmark machinery caused. Had a New Model M for about a year now, typing on one right now! In my opinion, it's a very good keyboard if you want a Model M feel and sound without hunting for a used one and/or want a smaller formfactor.
Major nostalgic vibes!! And 2hrs?! 🎉 let’s go! Thanks for all your hard work Nick, love seeing you make stuff like this! Especially when it’s videos you truly enjoy making
This video put me straight to sleep the first time, but I was able to watch it again today and this was awesome to watch. Great video Nick!
I appreciate the annotations with additional info/corrections!
I'm glad you found them worthwhile!
I really enjoyed this video Nick! sad I coulnd't catch tonights stream. Hope you're doing great!
Glad you enjoyed the video my friend! Sorry you couldn't make the stream, but hopefully we'll see you on Thursday!
This is so nice to see. I recently got a salmon switch Dell AT101 that I've been trying to get working, but unfortunately, it has a DIN 5 connector. Glad your Model M has the ps/2!
Honestly, I could listen to a whole video of key cap soup! So good
They make these automotive reusable swabs, its a plastic stick with one smal flat rounded cottony tool and a bigger version. Used to get into fine nooks and crannies within your vehicle interior like air vents, those would have come in handy for this project of yours here.
I remember that one they were very sturdy and solid a great video brother I'm a new subscriber 👍
I really enjoyed this one
This made me feel good
Woah this is super cool!
I'm glad you like it! I had a blast restoring this thing, such a classic piece of tech!
Now you need to bust out some DOS games to play with that beauty!
Treasure MathStorm, here I come!
Holy clanking spring noises.
New response just dropped
This keyboard makes itself known 😂
Gotta keep those stabilizers lubed up, you know what I mean?
Oh I know what you mean. Usually you wanna keep the action nice and smooth, but the Model M likes it rough 😏
Omg I think my dad has like three of those in his basement collecting dust.
Man, when my dad worked at IBM he had stacks of these he’d bring home for me to toy with. Had I known they’d be worth so much now I would’ve kept them 😩
Very cool of your dad to bring them home! I hope you can get your hands on one again someday, for the sake of nostalgia :)
You shouldve included the cleaning that would be the best and most asmr part
Nut Driver was my nickname in college
Whooop!
Bruh, I also have trouble with cutting out sudden sounds in my ASMR TwT I also use compressor, I've been hoping to find an alternative, maybe soon we'll have AI that can cut it out. But for now we'll have to painstakingly remove it by hand. OwO If I have a lot of sudden sounds I record the hand cam and my voice separately but that doubles the rec time. 😋 If I find an alternative I'll let you know to 😉 Also, another grate video as always ✨🍀🍄💚
Now I'm at the part with the chopped cable... I imagine they stole it 😆Clip and run 😋
Is this the keyboard from Half life and black mesa source
It's very close! That keyboard appears to have OS keys, but otherwise looks nearly identical.
All i hear is spring lol
That's pretty much all there is to hear 😂
hi
hi!
Yay first
DANG that was fast, certified (early access) first! 🥇
@@theASMRnerd weirdly I get these notifications but don’t get the poll notifications 😅😅
@@Bored_Barbarian The heck, YT?? 😂
Shift+F4=?
According to Google: "Shift+F4 is a keyboard shortcut to repeat the last find or go to action in Microsoft Word." The more you know!
@@theASMRnerd its also F16 which is an awesome fighter jet
Shift + F1 = F13....
most boards now have only up to F12 but can go up to F24
