  • It was such a blast to make this gown with my friend Astraea! Be sure to check her out at / queen_astraea and on YT @Queen_Astraea , as well as her instagram: / queen_astraea
Contest Rules: Must be over 14 years old, live in a country that allows mail. To enter, answer the question I ask in the video, and wait one week. On 4/6/2024, I'll pick three comments at random and respond with instructions on how to get your prize.
In this video, I talk about the plan of making this 1901-1903 dress, the ideas that Astraea and I had. I then go into the history of Charles Worth and his House of Worth. I do go into the history of dresses and how it really is the history of women's work that was then usurped by Worth, and how fashion has never recovered from this. After that, I look in detail inot the dresses that Astraea picked, and then I make the dress, using machine embroidery, digitization, metallic threads, and a lot of hand sewing! Finally, Astraea will put on the dress and show us how it looks on!

I adore Edwardian gowns (I'm blaming Titanic and Crimson Peak for this partially) so seeing any being recreated or replicated is exciting to me, so thank you for sharing!

If you ever get serious about it Vincent Briggs has a video about making his czcams.com/video/8LLJd70Yt_A/video.html&ab_channel=VincentBriggs . He did use a sewing machine, but was very slow and methodical about it so I don't think it would be thaaaat much of a time difference. So much ironing.

If sewing all the tiny pieces of fabric together is too tedious, maybe try finding a couple big vintage quilt blankets secondhand and use them as fabric for your robe? At least you'd have the fabric part covered.

My dream gown would be Sailor Moon's original princess gown. I fell in love with it when I was 13. I adore the regency cut of it and the way it flows. The best part was the embroidered bodice with silver threads and pearls. So elegant and so ethereal. Your gown is definitely elegant and those clouds are perfection

My dream gown actually showed up in this video. Worths Ironwork gown. I'd be married and buried in that gown if I could. Australia doesn't have much Art Nouveau architecture, and what little does exist is protected under heritage law and is predominantly iron work. So I've always loved wrought iron design and that dress couldn't be more perfect in my eyes.
Beautiful video, I'm so excited to see the full gown

The only dress I could think of would be something similar to the Breathe dress from Ever After. But I would modify it into shades of blue and silver, and give it a more celestial feel. Stars are one of my favourite things to add to anything. Art, fashion, a little doodle while on the phone... so plenty of stars would have to be on there

Sewstine, this gown is AMAZING! Your content has grown exponentially in a relatively short time. You've really nailed the visualization to the creation process and are able to communicate well with your audience with excellent narration, audio, and visual details. If I could have you create only one gown for me, it would have to be the white gown with rows of pearls worn by Belgian Princess Carlota, whose husband was the Austrian Archduke (and brother of Emperor Franz Josef) Maximilian. Carlota and her husband were pawns in an attempt for Napoleon to grab power in Mexico in 1864 when the couple was installed as Emperor and Empress. Carlota ruled as Regent in absence of her husband in Mexico City and is considered the first woman ruler in the Americas.
Carlota operated in circles with Empress Eugenie, who was known for her collection of Worth gowns. It is unknown if the white gown Carlota wears in her formal portrait is in fact from CF Worth, but it is highly probable. I first saw this gown in the April 1964 edition of the American Heritage collection. That would be my dream gown!❤

My dream gown is either Cinderella's gown from the 2015 live action movie or the blue gown Marie Antoinette is wearing when she first arrives at Versailles from the 2006 movie. Marie Antoinette's dresses are all to die for, but I've always been partial to blue. The 2015 Cinderella gown was the highlight of the movie for me, especially since I found so many of Disney's recent live action films to be lacking in both plot and visuals. It's still a dream of mine to be able to afford a princess gown and have some where to wear it to.

My dream embroidered garment is one that doesn't exist yet, but should. In Baroness Orczy's 1905 novel The Scarlet Pimpernel, a "humble English wayside flower" is the symbol of a masked hero who saves people from the guillotine. At one point, Lady Marguerite thinks, "Had not everybody about town recently made a point of affecting the device of that mysterious and heroic Scarlet Pimpernel? Did she not herself wear it embroidered on her gowns?" And yet, I have never seen a film/tv/stage adaptation where the costume designer incorporated embroidered pimpernel motifs! I always imagined Marguerite's dress as a white and red zone front gown, lavishly embroidered with stylized pimpernel flowers and twining green vines around the hem. I've been picturing this for a dozen years, and wish I could make it--but though I sew, my embroidery skills are sadly lacking, so I'll leave it to Sewstine!

If I could have any dress, I don't even think it'd be the gown that'd be the most decorated! I'm kind of obsessed with early 1500s dress, but specifically, those extremely embroidered chemises that are so incredibly over the top, with cutouts for lace and blackwork all across the sleeves and bodice. Barely anyone would even see most of it! That is like, the epitomy of the Dream Dress and it technically isn't even a dress, but that's my idea of luxury: frilly underwear from 500 years ago

WOW this skirt is literally breathtaking I can’t even imagine what the bodice is going to look like I CANT WAIT!!! One of my favourite dresses actually from my house of worth book is the wedding dress worn by Clara Mathews (illegitimate daughter of Isaac Merritt Singer, the sewing machine pioneer) for her marriage to Colonel Hugh STAFFORD IN 1880. It is such a beautiful dress full of ruffles, embroidery and loads of beaded fringe. It really is a beautiful dress which I will one day get time to make for myself.

  • @SkyLeaf1
    @SkyLeaf1 Před 2 měsíci +1

Firstly, that skirt is beautiful! The stars, clouds, and raindrop-like lace all go so well together, and even though I would also have loved to see the skirt made in a midnight blue colour (I can't imagine how beautiful it would be with a skirt that looked like a night filled with stars) I really like that the white clouds aren't a sudden contrast against a very dark background, but rather a subtle break from the light blue and a fitting transition into the lace.
Secondly, for the dress I would prefer, it was a pretty close call between Maria's pink rose gown from The Secret of Moonacre and Zelda's royal dress from Breath of the Wild, but I will have to go with Zelda's dress. Though it isn't possible to tell what materials and techniques would have been used to make the dress in real life from the game itself, I like to think that the details on the dress would include goldwork embroidery and beading.

The garment that has taken up space in my head since the mid 1980s is a kimono that is completely shibori dyed with a river curving and flowing over one shoulder to the floor through a green field with tiny wild flowers. I took course in that technique but never got close to making anything remotely close. And then i got allergic to the dye chemicals.
The skirt is stunning and i absolutely love the clouds and agree about his popcorn clouds.

omg sewstine, this video was exactly what i needed today! the skirt came out beautifully, and i have absolutely no doubt that the bodice is equally stunning, im so excited to see it!
i think a mutual friend of ours recently told you that you were my biggest inspiration to learn how to sew, and yes, wow, yes, this is absolute role model status work lmao
that being said! for the giveaway! not to be a debbie downer, but one of the reasons i wanted to learn how to sew on my own was that mass produced women’s clothing simply isn’t made for my body - so much so that it took me about 27 years to learn that, yes, that’s how that sentence should go. they aren’t made for MY body, but my body is not the problem!
i have never gotten to feel like a princess, ive never gotten to live the cottagecore dream of laying in my flower garden with a pretty dress and a book, because… i don’t own a dress.
as a tall plus sized girl, they simply don’t fit. waistlines never sit at my waist, hems are always too short, bust lines don’t line up correctly, it’s absolutely the worst and murder on my confidence.
so if i could have you make one outfit for me, it’d simply be a pretty dress that fits. for that top quality sewstine embroidery work, moons and stars to represent my dog and my cats, my little babies!
sorry for the extremely long post, but i wanted my entry to double as a thank you! thank you for showing people of all body types that the dream of perfectly fitting clothing is in reach if we dedicate ourselves to a skill, if that skill brings us joy.
i’m moving next month, but intend to start my journey of really buckling down in june to learn the basics, and i’ll be starting with your ghiblicore dresses for my first major project once i learn, and i’m looking forward to learning, and improving, and designing things i love!
the clothing industry may not be built for me, but i can build what i want myself, and thank you for showing me that! 🥺

If I could have you make any gown for me, it would for sure be the coronation gown from the end of the ‘97 Anastasia film but I would want it to be more like the actual Russian Imperial court dress before the Royal family was deposed. Those dresses are stunning and have so much embroidery done on them, so I imagine it would be right up your alley too! I hope one day to be able to go to the museum in Russia and see what has survived like the coronation gown of Tsarina Alexandra and dresses worn by the daughters. I’ve seen photos and I just wish I could go in person and see them up close to get a better idea of how they might have been made. But I can’t wait to see how this dress is going to come out that soft blue is just perfect for The Queen and I am so curious and excited to see how your dress with all the bees will come out too! Never realized I hadn’t subscribed but boy am I now because I need to see these gowns and hear more Shade being thrown on Worth lol.

    Yet another F A N T A S T I C garment. It looks like an absolute dream.
As far as my dream dress goes...its honestly a toss up between an existing historical garment and a movie dress. For the historical garment it is the beautiful Orange and Cream Worth ballgown with that beautiful big skirt. But as far as movie dresses go the movie accurate Just Breathe dress from Ever After still lives rent free in my head.

My dream dress would be some combination of Cinderella's and the Fairy Godmother's gowns from the 1997 Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella movie. I've loved Cinderella's gown since I was a kid, but as I've gotten older, I've grown more fond of owning something like the Fairy Godmother's dress that is just as iridescent, flowy, and in gold. So I would love a gown that combines elements of both and feels just as magical as they do. I feel like a hidden embroidered pattern with the shapes present on both gowns that are revealed when they catch perfectly with the light would fantastic 😊

    This dress is gorgeous!
My dream dress would be Elizabeth Swann's red pirate dress from Curse of the Black Pearl. I think it's be fun to have swords or Turner birds embroidered into the skirt panels, tying together her desire to be a pirate and the last name she uses (and eventually acquires). There are several gorgeous dresses from that movie series, but the red one always stood out among the gold ones she wears in Port Royal.

Picking just one favorite gown is hard. As far as historical gowns go, I would love a 1780s redingote. They perfectly combine the drama of 18th century gowns with a more tailored menswear look. For fantasy costumes, I love the costumes of from Lord of the Rings (those movies got me into costuming), but if I had to focus on costumes with amazing embroidery, I would have to pick something from Game of Thrones, maybe one of Daenerys's blue outfits from season 3 with all of the dragon scale smocking.

Ah, the joy of making clothing for family and friends that actually fits them and they look good in. As for me, I have the build of Queen Victoria in her later years. The hem would either be floor-length or right below the knees.

There are many ways and things to appreciate in this video. One hope I have is that everyone will see all the work, hours, and processes, and realize that any cheap and/or fast fashion dress you see on offer is:
    A) not going to look at all like the picture or anything high quality,
    B) made with exploitively cheap labor,
    Or
    C) both A and B

I was captivated from the fist moment. =) Also, my husband and I could not stop laughing at your salt. We had to go back and play section over a few times because we didn't catch everything. Tears. There were tears.
Ok, hear me out on this one...dresses from Game of Thrones. I tried to watch it (barely made it through season one and two episodes of season two) but could not get passed the extreme gratuitous violence against women. One thing I DID enjoy from the show were the amazing outfits. The embroidery on some of them is next level. The artist, Michele Carragher, made each one a work of art that tied to the character. There is no way for me to choose just one.
The reason I enjoy the dresses, outside of their aesthetic beauty, is that needlework is something I have loved for almost my whole life. My mother began teaching me embroidery when I was 5 (I still have the first piece I ever made!) and she continued teaching me into my early teens when I was able to really do pieces on my own. While I eventually migrated to counted cross stitch as my main, I have never moved away from needlework in many forms as a hobby (they're alts, if you will). I am fortunate that my mother is still with us (I'm 54) and when we get together with my sister, the three of us work on things while we yap; I cross stitch, my sister crochets, and my mom knits when her hands allow and quilts when they don't. The bonds that needlework helped build between the three of us are priceless.

I have two in mind, one of which that I always wanted to make, but I think if Marie Antoinette could have subtle embroidery on her Chemise A La Reine around the collar, cuffs and hem, she'd love it. The second is the black and white Art Nouveau evening dress by Worth, because I love the contrast of the dress which at a distance is stunning!

I would LOVE a jacket much like the fantasy ones in Shadow and Bone. I think these coats were absolutely gorgeous and essentially unisex in design, an element that I prefer. Also, while I LOVE watching sewing videos, and I am teaching myself to sew, I am more the jeans and t-tshirts type gal. This type of garment would fit right in with my tomboy style. I should learn how to tailor!

When i was young, I DEVOURED the works of Tamora Pierce, and ever since, I've been trying to figure out what clothing from Tortall looks like. To this day, I haven't been able to design anything that looks quite like what my childhood self imagined, nor have I seen any fan art or cosplay that hits quite right. I think my dream dress would be one of the ones Daine wore to visit the imperial court in Emporer Mage. She doesn't describe them in detail- one is a lilac with an embroidered and beaded gold silk overlay "frail as a butterfly's wing", the other is described as "a twilight-blue silk gown that whispered as she moved and winked with silver embroidery". I think if i could will my dream gown into existence it would be one of those two, just to see what they actually look like!

My dream outfit would be an 1890s creation with stars, constellations, moon phases with a fuller than normal skirt for the decade. I see the moon phases either going down the center back seam or around the hem of the dress. I loved almost all the dresses worn by Maria in Secret of Moonacre (2008) so it's hard for me to choose a favorite. I think this was the movie that made me drawn to and appreciate historical dresses. I love the floral embroidery on the bodice of the blue dress, especially on the collar (and on her pink gown which is very similar). Also, I thought the accordion-like bustle in back was a bit strange but the shape it gave was very interesting to me. The movie leaned into a fairytale aesthetic that I love and you can tell there was some historical inspiration in the dresses

This skirt is SO beautiful and I am excited to see the dress finished! I think my dream dress would be Italian renaissance (heavy dash of fantasy) that is secret garden inspired. Lots of lush vines and wild leaves and trim, with ribbon flowers and a hidden embroidered gold key - to get inside the garden of course! I know it would make more sense for a later period gown but I love renaissance dresses so much so 😂

Sincerely appreciate you sharing your talents and creations on your channel. This piece, along with all of your others, is simply gorgeous! Cannot say how much of an inspiration you are. You are incredible!!
My truest dream dress would be Claire Fraser's dress in Outlander that is reminiscent of Dior's "Bar"/Zemire ensemble except made out of linen and add forest green art nouveau floral embroidery going along the opening and bottom edges of the top bodice/jacket.
Satin and silk are gorgeous, but it would be amazing to be able to wear pieces more often that fit in with more modern-ish/history bounding everyday wear instead of a costume only brought out on rare occasions.
Love ALL the beautiful dresses from kirtles, robe a l'englaise, victorian riding habits, and beyond, but feel that pieces that bring the most joy are ones that can be worn often. Like your favorite cozy coffee mug(s) you reach for daily/weekly instead of the beautiful delicate teacup you're afraid to break.
    Thank you!! ❤

If I could have any outfit with any embroidery from history I think it would be a copy of Queen Hedwig Elizabeth Charlotte of Holstein-Gottorp’s 1774 wedding gown. I believe it to be the most beautiful example of the Robe de Cour, or “Grand Habit” ever made. It has the most divine silver embroidery and lace as well as a massive pannier and ofcourse a huge delicious train. If only I had the 17 inch waist to go along with it. 😂

That fabric is gorgeous. I love the way it moves. hmmm a dream outfit. I have to say the Georgian mens coats with all the embroidery have always been a dream project of mine. in my mind I see iris and peonies with butterflies. will I ever take the time to hand embroider all that? nope. just not going to happen. but your question didmake me think of it again. I always imagine "the Suit - 1780, British - The Metropolitan Museum of Art 17th Century, Silk Clothes" for the cut in a deep blue with the embroidery a bit wider, because if it's worth doing it's so worth over doing. maybe I'll think about a embroidery machine. I am curious as to what everyone elses dream design would be.
