The bible scripture that states "no one will be judged by their food consumption" while knowing unnecessarily harming animals is a sin.. I wish they could see the contradiction.. as well as the scripture that states "weak people eat only plants" which now is very well documented is incorrect and being on a well balanced plant based diet builds muscle.

These videos prove that most people want to be kind. They think they're good people. Participating in conversations like these(or just watching one on youtube) allow people to think through what they've avoiding thinking about and help them make better and more compassionate decisions.

@@irenethompson7679 These videos aren't really a true reflection of a cross section of society though, usually the people ed chats to have some sort of mental health issue or just a little bit odd to say the least. It would be interesting to see how he went on debating with someone a little older, a little more life experience and well read on the subject.
@Thomas Hunt he goes to universities and has been doing this for so many years speaking to many many people so I disagree. They may look like having mental difficulties because there's simply no well put together argument that Ed can't deal with.

If the students ed speaks to are an average cross section of the American education system then god help you ! I have never seen the argument that Veganism even though it claims to save animals actually supports the eradication of a lot of species. I would like to see how he responds to that.

I also was born in the middle East, now US citizen. When I was 17, in the 80s, I became vegetarian ( now vegan), I was considered weird, there were no any food alternatives, but I knew that animals' life was not less precious than mine.
I encourage this young man to keep seeking truth, and listen to his conscious, he"ll be on the right path I hope
I’m Syrian too and I know it’s a culture full of animal-based foods. When I went vegan I missed so much of that taste (but obviously it’s not worth funding abuse and slaughter of an animal!)
Anyway when impossible and beyond meat came out I could go back and enjoy all those other foods again. It was amazing. And it tastes exactly the same if not better and you feel even better (morally and physically!). Best decision ever!!
I knew several Syrians who are strict vegans and btw Burger King now have meatless Monday and they serve their vegan meals for about 3 USD
i wouldn't recommend my worst enemies to eat impossible and beyond meat though. just adjust to (whole) plant foods.. and make sure you get sufficient calories (more volume).
as a vegan home cook i eat lots of lebanese-inspired food in the summer when there are herbs in my garden, hummus and flatbread, falafel, lentils. there must be syrian equivalents?

@@hornerfarah2282 I do pretty regularly think about veganism and challenge myself - so idk where you are getting your info from to assume that. You also see vegans “infighting”/discussing on certain topics like if certain xyz product is vegan or if euthanasia is ok. Yet we stay as vegan as possible. You have to challenge yourself to break the barriers of carnism. Once you do, challenging yourself still likely leaves you vegan - you can’t logic your way out.

Despite him saying the “usual” arguments against veganism (eg humane slaughter, i need protein and the likes) he wasn’t agressive or defensive about it. And most importantly he was open to listen and have a productive conversation.
Ed is still to this day one of my personal ideals. Hope I can reach a level of calmness like that.

I’m so sick of hearing the “protein” argument. Especially from people who say they’ve done their research.... How many professional athletes, world record holders, and regular fit people need to be plant based to prove its really not hard at all to be fit and vegan.....
If you live on a Whole Foods plant based diet you are, without even trying, eating like numerous professional athletes 😅
I eat mostly a WFPB diet and take no supplements or drugs, and became vegan in the '90s. If I could change my diet back then and still be alive & thriving, I don't see how anyone nowadays could have a problem becoming vegan. Too many excuses!
Using athlete as vegan examples is dishonest. The top vegan athletes became vegan AFTER being on an omnivore diet. Throughout their childhood and youth they consumed meat and animal products. Their strong physique was obtained through eating meat as they were growing up.
Choosing to become vegan right before a sports competition doesn't prove that vegan athletes are equally competitve as omnivore athletes.
@@sonofgandalf403 and yet studies are showing athletes going vegan are seeing improvement in their skill. All the more reason to go vegan if you want to be in top physical performance. As many high level athletes are showing it produces better results when done correctly :)

Show me an athlete that has been vegan since BIRTH and today can outperform their omnivore colleagues. I'd like to see that.

I can't get over how many people think having the choice to do harm makes it moral, it's completely contradictory
Not true that animals are killed in a pain-free manner in Muslim culture. I am Muslim and I have seen how they are slaughtered, they cut the throat with sharp knives while cows or goats would still try to escape and they would forcefully put them down and finish the slitting of the throat. I saw it while growing up and I gave up eating a suffered animal. I am glad I could feel their pain and decided not to consume their fleshes. I wish one day the world will be compassionate to them and will stop eating them.

That’s all. Just because something ends in “ism”, doesn’t make it a religion, it makes it a movement, from antidisestablishmentarianism to cubism. You’ll also find plenty of religious people from many different religions are vegan, whether because that’s an interpretation of scripture or otherwise.

People talk as if they plan every ingredient in every meal every time the eat. Clearly the very existence of factory farming says that 99% never or hardly ever do.
This guy talks of his protein intake but I'd bet doesn't know how much he needs or at least how much most of his meals contain.
Something like 97% of Americans take on board too much protein. The same 97% don't take on enough fibre.

I totally agree, when I buy plant based meat it says all nutrient within the product. But when it comes to normal meat, many product doesn't even mention about the nutrition values in it at all. I really have no idea how people who use nutrient as an excuse know that their meat provide enough nutrition because the product doesn't even give the values.

I have a friend who ive been recently introduced to and hes very similar to this guy, honest about logical and ethical conclusions. We really have to appreciate people like this and even those who argue with us because as the saying goes. First they ignore us, then they laugh at us ,then they fight us, then we win.

Hey Ed, great conversation as usual. I'm by no means as well spoken as you, but when talking to guys that are concerned about muscle building and athleticism, I'd show them some of the great vegan bodybuilders and athletes out there - in addition to pointing out studies. Seeing some badass vegan who could kick their ass is most definitely more convicing than what some "nerd scientist in a lab coat" says. Much love from Austria

People worry so much about protein that most have just been completely brainwashed by this. What about other key nutrients that just dont come from meat?

Yeah I've been to a farm where animals were killed for Eid Al Adhar. All the animals were terrified. They all screamed in fear. That memory will always stick with me and it's the root reason why I'm a vegan. I'll also never forget how literally all the people around me didn't care. I was surrounded by monsters

One of the biggest barriers for people is that they completely overestimate how easy it is to be vegan. It seems overwhelming at first to change your diet. I hope these people get given leaflets after the debate pointing to some easy recipes and stuff to get them started.
It's honestly so fucking easy, the same as meat was.
Edit: first 2 weeks you might be like 'well wtf do I eat now' I get it. But just do 1 vegan meal every few days, ease into it. Once you know, you know.
So true. I went vegan around a decade ago and the only thing I had a small amount of trouble with at the start was cheese. It was like an addiction I never knew I had. Took a couple of months to get it out of my system.
But meat? Yeah. Absolutely zero trouble quitting that.
I mean maybe for you. I absolutely adore the taste of meat and while I've been vegetarian for almost two years now with a 7-month period of being vegan too, it's far from easy for me and I do miss the taste and the convenience. It's also very challenging for me to keep the muscle mass that I gained at the gym despite my diet being orientated around it. Not impossible, but certainly not easy and it feels like I'm fighting a losing battle.
Underestimate? Easy but not proven to be optimal, so I'll wait a few decades, to see how the V diet pans out.

I grew up with my vegetarian mother and she modified all of the traditional Middle Eastern dishes we had as veggie, and everyone was surprised by how great our dishes tasted even without meat - and sometimes even tastier than the meat option. Being vegetarian can lead to creative ways of preserving traditional dishes as well, we don't need to pick between not consuming meat and continuing to eat our traditional foods. We can have both our traditional foods without meat too

I know you’ve tried doing this in the past, but I think it would be more effective to incorporate imagery and videos in your conversations. Maybe not at the beginning, but at some point. I think there are two parts to the vegan argument: logical and emotional.
Earthling Ed, you do such an amazing job at following a discourse. I am just wondering how much of this is a skill you've always had and how much of it is through experience. I found find it very difficult to get to the root of this person is actually saying, and being able to formulate a reply that ties their thoughts together for them, that is an amazing skill to have.

I would love to watch more debates about religion/tradition and also about challenges with being vegan in a third world country. I live in England and my friends and family live in a country where meat is almost in every sort of foods. Their options are extremely limited and sometimes I lack good arguments to convince them to become vegan when they argue it would be impossible where they live. With them, the debates always comes down to capitalism and how trapped they are in the system. When the population of meat eaters is so massive, they feel as if they are drops of rain in an ocean and feel it’s all in vain… words of incentive would really help me here 😅 as they say: “if it’s already everywhere and dead, it would just go to waste”. They struggle A LOT with the correlation of “product”/demand when they feel so outnumbered
Do they have access to rice, lentils, beans, or other grains? You can explain to them that the curve of change is not linear, it accelerates as more people join - they make a difference by setting an example to normalize the idea, then influence others to try it, which leads to more products becoming available which makes it easier for more people to make the change.

Death is the end of life, none can escape. Most sentient beings try to avoid the end of life aka death.
So when possible, they should be free to live and extend their life if possible, not shorten it by killing them.

The Essenes were the gnostic forerunners of Christians who were a strict vegan sect for ethical reasons, as were the Cathars. Their religion was far from BS. I'd say stop conflating modern religions with authentic ancient ones.

you're not so Ron. what is done to animals is motivated by religious mandates rather than compassion for animals, so these two things should not be mixed. vegans should stop equating their zoolatry with other religions.

As someone who has always migrated toward veganism since i was very little, simply outbof compassion for animals, and as someone on their way to becoming a lawyer and one of my greatest loves (next to animals) is language, history, and arguing, HOW you argue is my most favorite part of watching these videos. EE is SO knowledgeable, but they WAY he argues is so impressive. The calm empathy, the very clear listening (i listen and hear everything, however i can also talk at the same time as the other person, and still hear EVERYTHING they say. I don't miss a beat. It a an extremely rare skill, however, as i have gotten older ive become much more aware i am that if you do that, the other person will not FEEL heard, even if I do hear them. And listening (and hearing) are skills, skills that are not always easy, and listening is an act of love. EE is very effective and persuasive because, even though in the end is just one strategy you can choose, and sometimes another one is more effective, like being more aggressive, but it all depends. (A lawyers favorite answer to direct questions). And in topics such as veganism and ethics and morality etc, EE's way is by far the most effective way of persuading, but most importantly opening up a real, honest conversations. That regardless of how the discussion ends on video, each person who sat down with EE, will go home, and later when they are alone and things are quiet, they WILL think about everything EE had said and reflect on themselves, their choices, who they are, and what kind of human they WANT to be. I'm not sure if EE fully realizes how profound he is effecting each person who sits to talk with him, and every single person who watches these videos with an open mind and heart. From someone who often thinks they know everything, THANK YOU Earthling Ed for how much I learn from you, esp about humanity, compassion, empathy, listening, considération, and truly reaching other humans.

If your religion says animals are deserving of moral consideration and we should cause the least amount of suffering to them as possible, then it stands to reason that, if you have an option not to harm them at all, then you should take that option.
Ed is so respectful when religion is the topic, but why are his followers in the comments always bashing religion?
Because they don't understand the difference between true spirituality and modern religions that have been corrupted. They're also unaware of the Essenes, an ethical vegan sect who lived in 2nd Century B.C.E. And actually I do remember Ed getting into arguments a few years back about his views on religion but he's since wisely learned how to handle the subject.
Because religion is one of the main sources of cognitive dissonance in today's world.

In any situation Morality has to be measured from the perspective of the victims, that's something most people forget. No mater how you kill an animal, it's the act of killing that has to be morally evaluated, not the method.

Put on 15lbs of muscle in one year on a plant based diet. There's over 16,000 species of legumes, more than 9,000 species of rice, and more than 53 types of nuts. I lead an active lifestyle and am still able to maintain a weight of 165lbs and around 14% body fat.
