EVASION - Evading capture for downed US Airmen - 1950

- As the Cold War heated up in the late 1940s, the prospect of being shot down on a reconnaissance mission over Eastern Europe became real. The US Air Force put together this dramatic training film, shot in Hollywood "film noire" espionage adventure style, to teach downed airmen how to make their way home out of hostile territory. All the capture evasion skills learned during World War 2 are put to good use, along with lessons learned by the CIA on how to operate in Eastern Europe. (Get this film full screen, full resolution on our Evasion DVD bit.ly/17pjW1p )
A B-29 is shot down during a combat mission, far behind enemy lines. The crew is separated during bail out into small groups. What follows are a series of lessons on what to do -- and not to do - to evade capture and make it back to friendly territory. Just a few of the many things you'll learn are: evading blood hounds, what to wear, and not t wear, to blend in with the locals, traveling inconspicuously by day and night, identifying civilians most likely to help you make contact with the underground, what to expect from the resistance and how to deal with them, crossing roads and exposed spaces, using misdirection, diversion & bluffing, crossing heavily guarded boarders -- and a whole lot lot more! Some of the crew make it back, while others don't, all told in a very dramatic and engaging feature film. I digitally restored the audio & video.

Dec 22, 1943 my Dad's B-24 went down over the Netherlands. 7 died in the crash, but 3 lived: Dad was badly wounded and captured, the 2nd also quickly captured. The third man, Sgt. Bevins, was found by the underground and hidden for the duration of the war. He was the longest-duration capture evader in Holland. They moved him among families where he had to act as a deaf-mute. They produced phony papers for him to fool the German occupiers. I met the resistance fighter who helped my Dad, and who made the phony pass papers only days before he Departed aged 97. The meeting was hugely emotional for us both. Thank you Mr. Leo Bult. The last flight for "Tail end Charlie"
You're dad broke law for telling you...I'm reporting
It's amazing that this was a really good movie in and of itself, even though it was a training film!
That co-pilot was shaking the yoke like he had the heebie jeebies. Seriously this documentary was better than a lot of movies.
I was thinking the same. Or someone was just out of camera shaking it or kicking the panel with there feet ?
yea he had the DTs
Would had been a better movie if years later the guy when back for the wheelbarrow
And remember the most important thing while you’re evading, have fun.
My mind automatically read that in 1940s narrator voice
It's not about fun It's about evading the enemy and survival
@@Phoenix411th , Some of what I said is colloquially expressed , “ tongue in cheek “.
However if you can’t have a good time doing something different, interesting and necessary then I don’t think you’re doing it right.
The wheelbarrow was the real star of this movie
@@digdoug9352 , Thank you for noticing that it is exactly what I was going for. I was considering it as a continuation, a last thought by the narrator.
This is surprisingly good for a training film done in a dramatic fashion. If you aren't careful you'll learn something.
I use these skills every day in my 20 year marriage
Great comment! I do the same and it's been 30! LOL Thanks.
Will you get to pick your next assignement ?
Your a dork. But still funny 😝😂😂
Cool enough to fool the weaker of mates, maybe.
40 years here. The cold war and interrogation films are helpful. There is no escape.
There is more story telling and drama in these army training films (I've watched a few) than in most modern stuff. And generally better characters actually, you start caring about their fate before you know it.
My ex-wife's great uncle was a B-29 bomber crewman who was shot down during the Korean war. The entire crew bailed out safely, and were all captured, but managed to overcome their captors and escape to safety over the course of a month by lying low during the day and only moving at night. They couldn't move quickly, because they had to acquire food and avoid patrols along the way. I can only imagine him sitting in a class while watching this movie. RIP Uncle Cono.
Gee Mack, that was a swell flick.
gosh mister that's a nifty comment
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. Nothing like a good cup of joe...
Yeah, sure Jimmy. Just imagine a guy from the bronx not knowing the value of these movin' pictures.
Boy I'll say..and how !...It was a gas ...The bees knees !
When I was in the army on gate guard every night one of the civilian contractors used to walk out the gate with a covered wheelbarrow.....everynight we would stop and search him....never found anything......after about a year we sussed out he was stealing wheel barrows every night...
You can't not be impressed
I love these old films. They are an absolutely fascinating piece of history. Thank you
Maybe these airmen would have a better chance of evading the enemy if they were not being followed by a film crew?
But it was easy to evade enemy soldiers - you could spot them miles away with those helmets ...
Me: "I'm going to school mom"
Mom: "ok bye"
Me: use these skills to go to the park
4:00 That copilot needs to calm down, he's shaking so much that he's about to rattle the entire steering panel off.
At the time this movie was made, B-50s were making regular reconnaisance flights well into the Soviet Union (they ended when the Mig15 arrived and made short work of them). Hence the evasion movie being in an eastern European environment, rather than the Asian one it probably would have a year or two later.
Sure glad the airforce made this parachute bright white. Makes it so much easier to hide than a light brown one.
I bet it was a cost cutting measure. The factory making white 'chutes probably charged a penny less per than the factory making brown 'chutes.
Sometimes you want to be found.
I remember being shown this film in the 1970s while in the Canadian Army. We used a lot of US and UK training films as we really didn’t have a lot of locally produced ones. I remember the instructor telling us that even though this film was old at the time, the information was still relevant. I thought the enemy helmets were rather comical, being US helmets with a ridge glued to the top to identify then as “bad guys”.
Can you imagine how many airmen were not able to escape the aircraft with that a massive parachute on their back . I remember seeing stock footage of airman bailing out of that big B-52 bomber as it crash landed back to earth what a crazy moment that must’ve been and sad for the ones that were unable to get out
I thought that the B-29's at the beginning and end of the film were from my grandfathers Bombardment group from when he served in World War 2. But I realized that his unit (the 505th BG) and the 92nd operations Group used the same tail identification which is the "W" with a circle around it.
+Michael Forrest it's alright. Those planes looked similar.
Michael Forrest I think they should be B-50's based on when the film was made, but maybe WW2 footage of 29's. The phony Lt. mentioned B-50's too.
That bogus airman up in the attic should have been Peter Graves.....lol
.
I find the music accompanying these training films to be exceptionally hilarious.
I kept looking for Steve McQueen riding a motorcycle lol.
I love the helmets on those "enemy" soldiers. They were depicted that way in manuals as well.
Tough command decision, but a good one. No need to slow down everyone else carrying a wounded officer. I recognize Gordon from television.
American are always pragmatic. their educational documentaries respect real situation without any propaganda and exaggeration.
Very Well Done better than any movie I have ever seen
I like how all the enemy carry an M1 Garand.
And drive Willy's Jeeps
Something to think about, and adapt to our future?
I might not have thought of hiding under the hay in a haywagon. Maybe because I have never seen one, Michael Dougfir.
This series got me hooked, thanks for your channel!
Much appreciated. Keep these coming.
Also a very educational film for sinister forces seeking to capture downed airmen...for example, at 12:59, it's better to struggle with the subject of your search in complete silence than to call for help, or otherwise make some noise, and risk the endless teasing and ridicule of your buddies for not being able to hack it.
Thats why they say right at the start "restricted security information"
@@ianh1504 Calling for help would just bring more enemy troops your way.
lol... To the guy who says his buddies would tease him.......lol...
@@bunnyfoofoo9695 yeah youre right, i dunno why op thinks calling for help is an option for *airmen downed in enemy territory*
@@ianh1504 lol....
@@ianh1504 op is suggesting the searching soldier calls for help, not the airman
"Hey, this bra is just my size! How does it look on me?"
The Buck Rogers helmets are cool.
The parachute packs contained a lot of survival gear, and the first aid kits had a lot of morphine. The captain would have at least been pumped full of enough morphine to see if it could decrease the pain enough to see if he could travel. All the crew members should have had .38's with a couple of extra boxes of ammo each' in the parachute packs. There would have been no reason to just leave him with the .22 survival rifle.
So you are saying it wasn't real and just a training film? Awh....
I really enjoyed this one, thanks for sharing!!
this makes me want to watch that Gene Hackman Danny Glover movie about the downed airmen in Vietnam. Great vid, thanks for posting!
Bat*21
Behind Enemy Lines is another Gene Hackman film on the subject.
Bat 21 or behind enemy lines with Gene Hackman as an admiral.
That movie is about Kosevo.
Always play your theme song on your Navy radio with you at all times.
You cannot get shot wearing civies, I'm still laughing!!
hitler definatly killed ppl in civilian clothes for being spys. add one map and your a spy
+Brett Bass
I assume you know this, but in case you don't.
What the narrator means by that its not illegal, according to the Geneva convention.
I think he is comparing it to the other guy a minute before, who killed the soldier and dressed in his uniform.. which can get him shot as a spy..
Christ alive, ended up watching the entire thing.
I enjoyed the video even though I thought it was a bit melodramatic
Beware the dreaded crested helmet army.
Almost looked like ww1 French Adrian's for a sec lol
Very interesting, thank you.
But the enemy were Spanish conquistadors, judging by their helmets?! 😳
Roman helmets.
Great show
Hey You Eight Balls! That was a pretty good Flick, wasn't it???
Cool movie! For a training film, this had really good actors.
Hahaha the old man brings his GIANT wife out there with him 🤣 "Stay here until old man come back with eat."
Good little movie !
Thanks Zeno
So, did the guys who were captured make it home ? Not a bad training film as far as training films go.
They were probably sent to a work gulag camp in Siberia. Yank ferret pilots were flying over the Soviet Union in the 1950s . They were testing out the Soviet radar and defense systems. If they were shot down and captured the survivors were sent to the gulag. The U.S. government said these men were shot down while testing "weather conditions". Google books about the "Ferret overflights" in the 1950s. Salute those brave men who died , because they were making sure the Russkis wouldn't be able to engage in a "Pearl Harbor" attack against the USA.
gulag camp , sorry
@Katie Rae Supposedly ... Still don't trust 'em. Putin wants Russia to go back to a Stalinist era foreign policy
Shawn Malone and thats why the media can control you just by bringing them up :)
@Katie Rae propaganda.
The medic that wrapped the skipper up I think he was in mork and mindy as mindys dad? Conrad Janus???
That's it ! I thought he looked familiar
The problem I have with this film is that it is set in WW2 and the men are wearing AF stripes. During WW2, there was no USAF. It was the Army Air Corps and they had the same stripes as all of the other Army divisions - infantry, tanks, paratroopers, etc.
This film was produced in the early 1950s to train USAF personnel on what to do if the were shot down in Eastern Europe, behind the "Iron Curtain." (B-29s were still in service at that time.) The country they land in is fictitious, entirely made up for this film. This is all explained in more detail in the description that I included with the video upload.
Zeno.
Sorry, but who the hell flies a plane like that. Maybe thats the real reason it crashed.
Great video
Thus starship troopers were invented…
I choose, as my next assignment...............guard at the service brothel.
Isn't it something how we're always training to fight the last war? How would these techniques have helped in Korea or Vietnam? This is how to evade if you are shot down in Europe during a widespread European conflict with an organized resistance, and if you are also of white, European ancestry. It was useless before it was released, though it's a fun film to watch for the drama. 🙂
Well one thing I've learnt is to never trust those damned peasants!
Is this Korea, Croatia or Los Angeles,? Excellent film, thnks.

Why didnt the Americans have a sidearm and a knife ?
Alot of em did... normally a 45. Auto
Thank you 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Anyone else notice that the civilian's voice in the beginning is just reversed? I wonder what the actually said
I will never give myself in I will go out like Rambo.
Did this work in Vietnam?
Nope. For most, if they weren't rescued within hours they were most likely captured or killed..
He likes to eat paper.
Interesting they drive the bomber with two pilots, we should try with our cars!
Aww, the good old days!
Good ? U mad getting blown to bits
Very very very interesting!! Love it

Those crested helmets were worn for "opposition" troops during U.S. Army war games at this time.
realy,,nice to know,,,,lol
That design also stabilized them at high speeds.
This is quite a good video..
'Twas very interesting

anyone know what kind of rifle the soldier had..?
xjeepmanx a supersoaker 2000
+The freedom factory sounds deadly
Definitley a survival rifle.
Probably 22. Or whatever similar caliber was available.
You can probably look it up
Justin Joens the .22 was typically an ar7 take down
why is the comms guy wearing post wwii rank?
Chuck Mellette 1950....Korean War
Because this film was produced by the USAF, which came into being in 1947, and is dated 1950.
AWESOME 🇺🇲🤘🏻👍🏻🇺🇲🤘🏻👍🏻
Why they have a banana on their helmets?
George Kennedy anf Anthony Perkins were great!
I'm surprised that the Air Force would repeat the old saw about dogs losing your scent in water. Simply not true. Dogs can pick up scent coming from the water, especially when the subject had just crossed the stream.
They can smell so well that they can tell what direction a trail went on land or if there is a teaspoon of bleach in a swimming pool, Sar Jim. It seems like turbulence could shuffle a path in moving water.
Water flows so it would carry the scent away. What they smell is human pheromones in the air above the water that linger.
Talk to a dog handler and they'll tell you their dogs are terminators that will go to the end of earth to find you and will never lose tour scent and can detect an atom that you touched in an area the size of new york state, but they do admit water lengthens searches.
@@ianh1504 "terminators"? ? The weak part is the dog handler. (fatigue, stopping to eat and drink etc). And getting in a car and driving hundreds of miles away seems to lose the dogs rather well. How does one touch an individual atomic particle?
