Sucker Bait - German Spies in the USA! (Restored-1943)

- “Loose lips sink ships,” was a warning seen everywhere during World War 2 in America. In this highly dramatic training film, starring Richard Carlson with Donna Reed, Barry Nelson and Esther Williams, unfortunately that comes true. The framework of the film is a lecture to a freshman class for spies in Germany who will soon be sent to the USA. As the cynical, sardonic instructor says, “Here is an incident to illustrate how our enemies talk, think and are criminally careless.” The mission in the case study is to discover convoy sailing times & routes so U-Boats can sink them. The story line follows three servicemen, “Bob, Bill and Jack,” from their hometowns to their port of departure. Despite trying to be careful, small things they say and do are pieced together by German agents to form a big picture. Among their many mistakes: just because someone goes to your church or wears a uniform doesn't mean they can be trusted; phone conversations that aren't really private; thinking you are being clever hiding information when your really giving it away, your trash can speak volumes, and booze and hot dames in a crowded bar can be a recipe for disaster. “Just like shooting ducks in a pond.” All told in a highly polished Hollywood “Film Noir” style. This film had quite a bit of damage to the audio track. I was able to restore almost all of it.

Anybody else been binge watching WW2 training film's??
Yes man, thanks for reminding me that I have a real life too!
Yes, and as someone said, more interesting than modern ones !
I like that this one is an actual narrative.
Yes I am.
Me. Just watched a interrogation training film.
Holy Cow, half of the actors in this war training film eventually became famous in the movies or TV including: Richard Carlson, Stephen McNally, Donna Reed, Spring Byington, Frank Faylen, Morris Ankrum, Esther Williams, and Barry Nelson. And there were some famous old time Hollywood established actors in it too: Joe Yule (Mickey Rooney's dad) and Frank Reicher - the skipper from King Kong (1933). War is good for Hollywood.
Donna Reed was a nazi spy!?
Wow 😮
Why did CZcams start randomly suggesting these videos to me, and why am I immediately obsessed with them?
Nothing else really puts a war that was over almost forty years before I was born into an actual relative perspective for me. Fascinating stuff.
I wish corporate data security training was this entertaining.
I can imagine the ending would be pretty terrifying for a US Soldier of the time. Seeing your ships destroyed, Bob Bill and Jack drowning, all because of a seemingly innocent mistake of revealing a small bit of information about when you were deploying overseas.
Great drama in this, kept my attention throughout. Not a surprise then to see the actors and actresses starred in proper films later.
Since that chick is hotter than marilyn monroe yeah probably
A lot of the major actors and filmmakers of the time served during the War, primarily making training films, documentaries, feel-good reels for the public back home, and even propaganda.
We were some amazing people back then. Here’s hoping we, too, meet the challenge with honor when our time inevitably comes.
This is better than most movies made today! I couldn't stop watching it.
Movies made today would be anti-American and sympathize with the enemy.
Watch the one about escape & evade in enemy lines... It's about 1-1/2 hours long and it's better than most movies today. lol
@@michaelr4015 With reason as we have had fascist governments for years.
@@michaelr4015 Today, we would be encouraged to talk to the enemy, otherwise, we'd be branded racists if we didn't.
@@nedludd7622 even this is in a way anti American and from a fascist government
I wish there still would be bars like that "Barney's" with good vibes and that kind of music.
I love all the silent extra commentary added by the various posters in the background -- the multiple 'Don't Talk' versions, plus the movie poster 'Kiss the Boys Goodbye' and the 'Someone Talked' at the end. The narrative's great, too. Thank you so much for taking the time to restore and share this!
Glad you liked it!
I'm actually glad CZcams recommended your channel, normally I ignore their idea of what they think I find interesting as they usually get it totally wrong. And It only took them 5 years. Thanks for the great uploads. :)
Fantastic to see all these brilliant training films ....... Thank you.
You’re welcome👍
I LOVE Richard Carlson in this! He was great in all of his WW2 training films! (He directed some too btw.)
This training film is as good as any full-length production.
I know, it's hard to believe this is just a training film.
Thank you for great work in restoring this war film. I'm a WW 2 buff and really love these Espionage films. Thanks again! Paul fro Orange, Ma. USA
Me Too!
Guy who grew up in Athol, Ma here.
My GrandNephew is in Orange MA
The production value of these training videos are amazing! They could literally be featured films.
That’s because many actors and Hollywood production pros were inducted into the service & made the films. See czcams.com/video/tGrcfMaKb6Q/video.html
they kinda were! i believe they aired stuff like this before movies in the theater.
@@ZenosWarbirds just commented the same thing ☺️ God bless and thank you for sharing parts of our history with these younger and future generations. You should be proud of what you do 🇺🇸
The takeaway for people at the time was, "If you want to get laid in Port Haven, head to Barney's."
I'm still trying to find the place... I think Barney didn't make his mafia extortion payment. He's probably wearing concrete boots while swimming with the fish.
They got some big stars for this, like Spring Byington and Donna Reed.
You beat me to it! ;-) Film was made out of M-G-M...
And Barry Nelson.
Donna Reed, I thought she looked familiar.
@@patrickmiano7901 Was he a big star?
@@steveweinstein3222 In the early days of American 🇺🇸 television 📺, he was. He lost 😞 popularity as he aged.
Man I LOVE all these old films you post! Thank you so much and please don't stop!
8:55 The looks that the soldier behind him gives are priceless.
When the lockdown finishes I want to go to Barney's. That looks one swell place for a drink.
Thank for the upload x
Rule # 1--Study the enemy, find their weakness, and use it to your own best advantage.
Same as picking a wife.
"Today we discuss a familiar topic - American stupidity."
Unfortunately, I cant refute that. We have a large abundance of that.
🙁
Back in the days of Carbon Paper and Typewriters, no Photocopiers or 'Spell Check' back then...thanks for uploading this, kind regards.
I spent 6 years in the Air Force and they CONSTANTLY harped on us about COMSEC. Just in going to the NOC Club or at a bar in town, I could pick up all sorts of information about who was going where but since I was a medic, no one thought I could put two and two together and I learned a LOT about who was going where and when. I was shocked about how no one seemed to take COMSEC seriously. I got to know a few MP's and the info they gave was absolutely amazing. I knew about 100% gate searches before even OSI was informed and when CID came into the office to tell my boss, he saw me and said he would talk to him later (looking at me) and my SA said, "Oh, so there is going to be a 100% gate search tonight." The CID weenie just couldn't understand how HE knew before CID had a chance to brief him and he never let him in on his secret. I kept him filled in on all sorts of things I gleaned just from listening to seemingly harmless chatter. And when you look back as to how EASY it was to get information out of Los Alamos and sent to the Russians and the number of highly placed moles the Russians had, it's a wonder we won at all.
I am sure today it is even worse given the quality of recruits and how stupid they really are and how easily manipulated they are.
Relying information, between axis nations. Next you'll be telling me that the IJA and the IJN are actually working together rather than trying to kill eachother.
I'm happy that the classic "man thinking with the wrong head" strategy has been depicted too. I think thats underestimated.
These WWII films produced by the different armed forces were SO well done! Made up compelling little stories but so much information for our troops back then.
The actors weren't going for an Oscar in these training films, they were just playing a part to make the film's point. I like when an actor just does their job....without all the dramatics.
This is superb, contextually accurate then and now as well. Thanks so much for uploading it.
Subscribed to you channel several years ago Zenos. And then completely forgot about it. Suddenly yesterday one of you vids popped up on my suggestions, Land and live in the jungle I think. Been on a WWII training film bender ever since. You have the BEST videos of any of the channels I've been watching. Many other good channels but yours is the best!
plays like a feature movie of that era, good actors n plot, Donna Reed & Esther Williams...both at age 22
Looks like Donna Reed at 26:30. The actress from "It's a Wonderful Life" and others. Very pretty actress. This is a pretty interesting video, and I think that the restoration is a really good job! Thanks for doing it.
It was.
and Richard Carlson at 16:00
Classic girl next door beauty. Thanks for pointing her out.
this is more interesting and suspenseful than most movies, especially new movies.
That was back then. Today at installations be super careful whom you admit. Masquerading as top staff is one way the enemy gets in and out way in advance. A word to the wise
Really good espionage film nicely restored. Thanks for posting.
This was directed amazingly
Great actors, hopefully there’s new videos like these in the 21st century.with all these wars going on
They are all Hollywood actors who were drafted into the film making unit of the U.S. Army. They wore uniforms & had ranks etc. Fortunately, the Army had them do what they do best -acting- instead of sticking a rifle in their hand & sending them to the front.
Donna Reed and Morris Ankrum (great judge character on Perry Mason)
I want a pair of 2-tone shoes. A white fedora, too.
I have the set, suit too, in Second Life.
Yeah, I still dream about wearing those kind of clothes with the white/black fedora... Basically like the mafia guys from the 30's-40's. People would never let me get away with dressing like that.
The price you’ll pay for that in 2021? Eternal virginity😆
Never trust a guy in two tone shoes!
As a spy, you wouldn't be allowed to wear them. The company wants the "little grey man" look.
13:45 Morris Ankrum played in a lot of 50's Scifi and western movies. He was in Earth vs the Flying Saucers, The Giant Claw, Invaders From Mars, Kronos and a lot of westerns.
The giant claw, the rocket ship, Tennessee johnson, and appearances in 280 TV shows. But why am I sharing this with you? Go to IMDB where all the backgrounds of every actor is, duh...
the War Department should make more movies
this is awesome
This is a great film your diligent efforts in re mastering the audio pay-ed off big time
The War Department LOL! I love how the old guys I knew, would refer to their wives as "the war department"
When I served, we referred to the Mrs as The Sargent Major
A certain 21 year old leaker should have watched this video
Army hired some really good script writers.
Like the posters, I have quite a few of them in my collection
Enjoyed this film..
Just randomly came to this after watching the famous detective movie The Big Sleep with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and who should pop up Brody alive again as the receptionist at 14:06😊
Thank you 🤩🤩💖
I'm surprised that they did not have the saying loose lips sink ships.
That's a British think
Eyeeee Yi Yi YAAaaa....lol....the bar scene where the vidio spins as the drink kicks in is priceless....the ol' kraut forgets the 1927 "alabama song" or"whiskey bar"was a big hit....written in Germany.
The Teacher Is VERY Convincing
AND, very handsome. I would date him, but I wouldn't talk to him.
Sooo- That's what Richard Carlson did before joining the Office of Scientific Investigation and dealing with a Magnetic Monster....and this is what Morris Arkrum did before becoming a Army General and giving his life in the fight against the invasion of Saucer Men.....
I’m utterly shocked that the term bougus existed in the 40s
The only way I can understand what’s happening in that classroom is the teacher narrating the action of the video. But. Like. Only the parts he does voice over for
This US Army training film is loaded with stars.
Dang Barney’s was off the chain!!!
I almost didnt recognize Donna Reed and I'm thinking one of the soldiers was Marshal Thompson who I think was on Daktari in the 60s.
That bar scene reminds one of Coconut Grove.
Amazing piece of history
You've got a lot of cool videos.
Thanks!
I spotted Richard Carlson, Morris Ankrum, John Merton, Spring Byington, Donna Reed, and Frank Faylen in this film.
Also Stephen McNally...
@@steventuck1524 I forgot I also saw Arthur Space in there too.
Crazy world for sure, the direction it rotates and all. 0:30
Man, if Donna Reed was waiting for me back home, I'd sure watch my P's and Q's!
"Just a minute, Sister...I'm a Federal Officer". I love it.
Now we're really being sphed on cellphones TV's
Throw in Bogi and it's a Hollywood classic.
Just noticed Donna Reed (It's a wonderful life) was in there. This is pretty good
Thanks for teaching me how to obtain intel from americans. Unfortunately german U-boats are not really combat ready as well as everthing else in the German army since the end of the cold war. Maybe I should rather work for the chinese.
I like the music swell upon cigarette lighting
Love these films...
Stephen McNally, Morris Ankrum, Frank Finlay also in the cast.
Mary Beth Hughes - she's perfect for this role. Donna Reed too - I recognize the GI that got drunk, can't remember his name though
17:30 Barry Sullivan as Sid. Remember him on the Twilight Zone running around on a play set wife his wife hung over.
I believe it the Germans never had the proximity fuse. More valuable than the German King Tiger Tank during the Battle of the Bulge. Best kept secret.
Note regular movie stars and supporting actors. Upset boyfriend is Barry Nelson. Msgt later starred on TV as secret agent.
Oh Spring Byington is Msgt Jack's mom and his girl is Donna Reed. Early TV star.
Excellent.
35:28 A smash broadway hit about the importance of neutering your pets.
This presupposes a VAST number of German spies here, including ones with heavy accents.
Funny thing, several years later you could switch from Nazis to Commies and make the exact same film.
Kill moose and squirrel
The problem is when ANY information any simply allows for double-checks. You're not safe by lying about the details.
Mary Beth Hughes was the blonde girl. Played in Charlie Chan movies also Inner Sanctum 😅
Love these
One of the spy students in the class vaguely looked like a black man
I mean come on guys doesn’t the German officer in the classroom even recognize that one of the students looks like a colored man as they say in the day the colored but today it’s African-American so doesn’t the German officer recognize that one of the students looks African-American or African German
?
Awesome!
"Today we discuss a familiar topic - American stupidity."
Unfortunately, I cant refute that. We have a large abundance of that.
🙁
wow! that escalated quickly!
Dec.2017----I'm sure this was well appreciated during the war, but there's a lot of holes in the story like making the Germans look stupid. When studying a foreign countries language and customs, you do NOT use yours. I remember seeing a video where one person who was in training and someone said something to him in English and the guy responded back in English, instead of the countries language he was suppose to be from. Of course, there were those Germans going for infiltrating during the Battle of the Buldge, but if you remember, few Germans were captured in the U.S. during the war. As for shipping info, U-boats raised hell on the east coast for a few years because blackouts of harbor cities weren't enforced. Remember reading newspaper accounts (from the library archives) of cargo and bodies washing up on the shores of New York and Miami for examples because of this.
The movie was the Great Escape. On e guy was waiting for a bus, and a plainclothes officer said Good Morning, and he answered back in English. Then he was shot.
They washed up in Boston Harbor as well.
They probably made them speak German just to help the viewers identify that they were German spies, I don’t think they would actually be that stupid
Love the erotic symbolism of his lighting his cig off of hers. I'd like to know how the FBI knew the GI wrote under the stamp.
any stamped mail from a soldier/sailor/Marine would be HIGHLY SUSPECT as they were EXEMPT FROM POSTAGE . So no GI would waist the cash...
Steve Weinstein they used to call that “barnyard intercourse”, all part of the Sexual lead-up.🖤🇨🇦
I'll remember “barnyard intercourse" - love that, LOL!
At 18:48 she lures him in with a little smile Back then it was more modest and conservative Everything was repressed Now everything is overt but PC🥴
Almost the steamiest scene we ever saw with Richard Carlson! White Cargo is, of course, much steamier. 🔥!
There's some future "It's a Wonderfull Life" stars in this pic. too,...look for them.
That's what I call a true non-Hollywood and non-American ending... suckerbait!
23:49 muzzle discipline.
9.19....bogus officer was the craggy actor, Stephan McNally.
Barney's sure is swingin
In the end some of the students joined the air force, one became a nurse and one even became a greek soviet agent!
Back when cigarettes were a food group.
Tobacco companies used to hand out free cartons on movie sets and actively promoted characters smoking.
I've seen some of these actors before .
Although it's a propaganda film, it's still interesting to see the other side of WWII besides combat
You ever hear about Russian sleepers (agents)
damn this is awesome
The lady face slapping was that little extra bit from back in the day.
12:15 good sound
“These nazi tools” 🤣🤣🤣
SPIES IN THE USAAAA! SPIESSS IN THE USA gotta find the SPIES IN THE USAAA.
you get the point
Teacher reminds me a little of Eric Bana.
40s usa women...wow...nice!
Donna Reed had it going on.
