I got to meet Pappy when I was young. One of his Black Sheep, John Begert, lived nearby and the Black Sheep Squadron TV show was popular. Pappy came during an air show weekend and me and my buddies got some time with Pappy Mr. Begert’s home. These men were special. Brave, humble and very gracious with their time.
I met Boyington at Falcon Field in Mesa,AZ in the late 70's. I bought your book you wrote with him. He wanted 10 bucks for a autograph. I was 10 years old. He was a prick.
Just for the record, the book you bought in the late 70s would have been his autobiography. I didn't write my bio of him (Black Sheep One) until 2000, some 12 years after he died. Regardless, your recollection is right in line with what I have heard from many people, who said Boyington was grumpy or curt to them at air shows.
I bought his book, with autograph from him at Oshkosh in '81. He was indeed a grumpy bastard. But he was my hero & I was in awe.
@@mikewashington-se6qw I hope you still consider Boyington heroic. He had character flaws but was an outstanding combat leader in wartime.
Same thing happened to me in Oshkosh a royal jackass of a man
I met Major Boyington at a CAF air show in Harlingen, TX around 1978. He signed the poster he was promoting. He then easily signed the copy of his paperback with a personalized message. Glad I had had the good sense to bring the book with me. He didn’t charge me a penny for either signature+. He didn’t even hint he wanted money. He impressed me as a serious type of guy. Having read his book, I could understand why. His story is one that ended on the side of pacifism. All the imagined glory of war had long since been washed off by his trials with captivity, PTSD, and alcohol. Sorry you experienced a bad time with one of our nation’s real heroes.
Beautiful engine sound too! fantastic footage.
Thank you! I dubbed in authentic Corsair R-2800 audio recordings. More episodes to come!
Never saw this series before. What an awesome job you have done!
Thank you very much! Your comment means a lot. It's a new series that I'm creating one episode at a time. Part 4 is in progress. I'm a one-man studio and work slowly, so episodes are coming out about every 2 months or so.
You narrate a pretty good documentary. Your voice is clear with good diction. The background music isn't overpowering and the information is as factual as possible. Well done.
I am looking forward to part four. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much for your comment, Pamela. All of those aspects--concise narration, appropriate music, and accurate information--are important to me, and it's gratifying to know that I'm hitting the mark.
Thank you and nice job putting this together and presenting it.
I can’t get enough of your work Bruce. Your books and videos are simply the best. Thank you for such fantastic history!!!
Wow--thank you most sincerely! I hope you'll share the channel far and wide and help it to grow. I'm grateful for your comments!
Watched from Old Harbour Jamaica 🇯🇲, very interesting.
Thanks, and hello to Jamaica!
Turtle Bay is a beautiful part of the world. Parts of the airstrip are still intact today with an amazing swimming hole tucked behind it.
Excellent video, thx!
That's so cool to know! I have a photo of the squadron pilots enjoying some beach time at Turtle Bay--perhaps it's that same swimming hole.
I bought his book which was a blue paper back book in 1978.The book was a great read.Thank you for this video.
Thank You
Really enjoyed the episode. As a kid in So Cal, I lived not far from where Baa Baa Black Sheep was filmed and often had a five ship of Corsairs fly right over our house. Bruce, I’ve read most of your books and have thoroughly enjoyed them.
Thanks so much! How lucky you were to see those formations of Corsairs--I take it you lived in the vicinity of the Indian Dunes airstrip. I was a teenager in college and watched the show faithfully. Stay tuned for more episode of Black Sheep Chronicles.
I almost had A change of. meeting him back in 1970 in the San Fernando airport in California, which they closed down.Of course I was learning how to fly. At
Van nuys airport.
Boyington used to drink at the Hotel San Carlos in Pensacola, Florida in the mid 70s I was having a drink there ,he was there talking to a few former Blue Angels I was a door gunner on a huey and I was with a full Bird Col we took a a huey 30 clicks behind enemy lines and saved his bacon
now bigntime❤ thats a save
Well done.
WW2 was one of my favorite history to study. And the series old films is awesome. In this group of Pilots and wartime were some of the best. Pappy Boyington may have been a hard case but he was one heck of a pilot. And I also love the TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep. Starring Robert Conrad who also served in the military. Thank you for these videos, I love the real thing
Thank you! More episodes to come, so please consider subscribing to Skywarrior Media.
Thank you for this series it has been very informative and great to watch!...looking forward to P-4
Thank you!
Thank you for the video Bruce.
You're most welcome!
Excellent series. I loved the stills and videos especially. The background music you selected worked very nicely with the images.
Thanks Mr. Gamble, I really enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching! I have a long way to go to get this channel and VMF-214 series going, so please help get the word out!
I'm enjoying this a lot. Thank you!
Great to hear!
Great books!
Thank you, sir!
One of the Black Sheep Squadron mechanics, Groover Sassaman was our Harley dealer. His son still is. Colorful man, but neither cussed nor drank...but could ride.
Virgil Ray is my late Father's first cousin. We are from North Carolina.
Thank you for reaching out. Virgil Ray's disappearance while making a non-combat flight to Guadalcanal remains a mystery, though it may have been due to bad weather. That must have been difficult for your family.
As far as i am aware,Dilip Sarkar MBE,a writer and one of the most published on the spitfire and its missing pilots, maybe able to throw some light on american pilots and the british nailing landing the Corsair in flight decks and then taking it to the american navy,i hope that helps, great vlogs on the pacific air war, subbed 🇬🇧👍
Thank you! The Royal Navy's important role in the Corsair's history has been very well documented, both in print and video. Great stuff!
Good stuff!
Many thanks!
I youst to watch robert conrade fly Wesley chaple fla. He flew his corsair all the time little airport off 75 and 54
Boyington always flew older planes and let younger pilots fly newer planes. He didn't have his own plane.
Engine torque must have been monstrous
Pappy wasa fixture at EAA OSHKOSH for many years.
As usual this guy has his facts wrong. Read Pappy's book.
Ok, why not provide a few things to support what you stated. I have and read the book and fail to see anything that supports what you imply.
