  • Confused by Blender vector displacement? Don't worry about the math: we'll make it intuitive and simple.
In this quick CG Cookie intro tutorial by Chris Bailey (‪@CBaileyFilm‬ ) you will learn how to generate geometry using nothing but a shader.
That is the basic idea: using color to "fake" geometry and shape or bend your material.
Chris will show you how to take an ordinary plane and turn it into an animated ocean wave using a single shader. We'll take an artist's approach to get you up and running in the most intuitive way possible.
You might even start to enjoy vector displacement - who knew it was possible!

I like seeing how you work with nodes. I find them so confusing but this has cleared up a few things for me.

HSV actually stands for Hue / Saturation / ‘Value’ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV I’m not quite sure why. Other parts of Blender also use ‘value’ to describe brightness

Lot to digest, nicely presented. Noob question: a compound curve along Y? I think it would be Y, not sure.

Cool i would like to see more examples on how it can be applied, i know its used alot in VFX and the same principles can be applied to create effects in other engines like unreal or unity

I'm new to Blender and I have been watching a lot of your videos, love the content and the way present everything. Regarding this Wave though, from the tip through the concave section till the end, we should have a more smooth texture, since the water is being pulled and sort of stretching the mass of the ocean, or something in those lines right? Is it possible to blend between textures on the same plane?

You spent far more time wiring nodes than on vector displacement. Just use an iimage. Not knowing about adaptive subdivision was why I gave up on this technique. Thanks for the tip
