I am living proof of this philosophy. I only earn (by choice) $30k a year, but because I have zero debt, I live with a greater sense of freedom and comfort. Paid off my mortgage 13 years early by doubling up on payments and paid for a car with cash. I own everything I need and do not spend frivolously. My mind is blown when I hear of folks earning $400k who can barely make it. I tell people that it's not what you earn, it's what you spend. Now if we could only get our government to adhere to this rule, all of our lives would improve.

I feel like I would be living in a constant state of worry and fear that something would go wrong (car problem, health emergency, house repair) and would not have the means to pay for it. Thats not a concern to you? I mean 30k is hovering at the poverty line

@@christoph1596 Savings offsets the emergencies for the most part. When I was first married he only made 25k and I couldn’t work (no disability or SSI). Paid off his older truck, were debt free, lived frugal like our grandparents so when Covid hit we barely noticed. Also paying bills 3-6months in advance with any bonus or tax refund. You get a discount and can float the rest of the year part time if you want. Software engineers sometimes do a 3-6mo project and their bills are paid for the year or more because their expenses are under control & debt free. LeanFIRE gives you a good idea.

@@V.Hansen. , LUCK. Seven days after arrival, I bought a mobile home, 2 BR, 1-1/2 bath. I KNOW. But I only paid $4000, $500 down, $91/mo. in 2015. If I GIVE it away tomorrow, I've essentially lost nothing. The walls needed some love inside and out, but the previous owner was a Mexican gentleman who practiced his crafts here; ceramic tile and laminate floors and genuine black granite counter tops throughout. AC through the walls allows zone cooling, so my electric bill has never been more than $150/month. Lot rent is only $675/mo. including water service, and this is Phoenix. Can't rent a 1 BR anything here for less than $900/mo. now. Also have two older, truck 27 and sedan 10 years, reliable 4-cyl/stick vehicles under the carport. Have everything I need and pay cash for my wants. What neighbors, friends and especially strangers think matters not. Dropped that paradigm long ago.
Drive around a neighborhood of middle-class mansions sometime. You'll find doors up and garages so full another bicycle will not fit, while $100,000 worth of SUV and sport-sedan sit baking in the driveway. Clearcoat don't like that. Not often here, the AC is set below the dewpoint, creating condensation and feeding mold within the walls. None of it is paid for, but VISA and MC are happy to subsidize.
The keys here are three: 1) ZERO DEBT. 2) STRICT BUDGET. 3) SCALE DOWN TO LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS.

Every state is radically different. In PA your beneficiaries get the balance of your account when you die. Plus there are multiple options. If you decide to take your contributions and interest out day one as a lump sum payout, you still receive a monthly benefit that is worth around 70% of the benefit if you did not take the lump sum. Not to mention in PA we pay into SS so are eligible for Social Security. It’s like a different country in different states.

Not sure why you think taking lump sum is bad advice. Lets think. If she takes lump sum minus taxes owed on that, she can invest the whole thing immediately into index funds and have decent return for years to come. Or she could take a portion of that and go ahead and pay off her house instead of waiting for 4 more years to do it. That alone is more money in her pocket instead of the banks.

This will remove any and all stress that causes. For her in that situation the debt from the ch13 really doesn't matter to her budget if she pays it off today or in 3 years. The only benefit of paying it off sooner is if in death the full amount becomes due vs the discounted value, if that is the case then negotiating a early pay off could allow her sone to inherit some.
