Finish Building NEW Crane Boom! | Franna Crane Project | Part 17
Vložit
- čas přidán 16. 05. 2024
- We're making serious progress on the new boom section for our crane! We start by salvaging parts from the old boom before getting started on the brand new 6 meter RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section). But before installing the custom-built boom end we crafted and built in Part 16, we meticulously weld in all the necessary components like pulley mounts and guide block plates. The new boom end itself goes in smoothly, and then it's time to lay down some serious welds. We weld the boom internally to the RHS and weld all the flat bar onto the main end plates. To finish things off, we tack weld flat bar to the top of the RHS, creating a barrier for the extension cable. This episode is packed with fabrication and welding, showcasing a fantastic upgrade for our Franna crane. Stay tuned for the next Franna crane project video or catch up on all the previous videos below 😎👇

My favourite time of the week! Whoop whoop!! 🥳🥳🥳
As Basil Brush (UK TV show), would say "Boom, Boom"
Nice work guys, have an awesome weekend!
The Frana Crane has provided far more content than I ever would have expected.
we can't wait to show you all what we have planned 🤩😏
It's been a story that shows creativity, resilience, and craftsmanship. It's been amazing 😍
I hope the return is worth the investment.
@@berrieds And humor. Don't forget humor.
perpetual content machine.
I bet not one single person was able to resist a smile when Karen was amazed at the belt grinder's hidden function. 😁
Her genuine surprise at it made me laugh more than I care to admit 😂😂
Yep I grinned - she is an absolute treasure.
I am a 73 year old retired builder, welder, fabricator and I have only one thing to say about you Kurtis.
YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!
Your designs and workmanship are absolutely flawless. I give you five stars Sir and if you walked into the room - I would stand up and salute you.
Art from Ohio
He is one of the few that I have seen that is a better welder/fabricator that my grandpa was. Unreal!
Art, you just made Kurtis' day with that comment! From a legend like you, that's high praise. Thanks so much for watching!
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Of the many many things I have built I would say that wheelstanders for the dragstrip would be the most impressive. I am also an accomplished machinist and a first class prick that doesn't compliment anybody.
I am extremely happy to compliment Kurtis he is one in a hundred thousand - a truly gifted man - and I and my family just love you both and Homeless.
Art from Ohio
You said it perfectly! His skill level mixed his work ethic make for very fine craftsmanship! Add on the engineering skills....a true top tier in his field!
For anyone that's never run a torch, it's difficult to convey just how much talent and discipline it takes to operate a cutting torch with that level of accuracy. I'm amazed, not sure I've ever seen anyone with a hand as steady and accurate as yours.
This, for sure. This is WAY more difficult than it looks!
I've always wondered why he doesn't use a plazma cutter but man he has that torch DOWN to a science!
That hand cut torched hole for the pulley mount was a pleasure to watch.
Yes though this time for sure Kurtis would have to break out the magmount drill and cutter to make it, though that possibly is being reserved for the side access holes he will have to make on that boom section later on.
Kurtis's skill with the gas axe is way up there. His cuts by hand often look like they were made by a robot.
I'd say the only one I've seen, better than him, is ICWeld
@@onebadsavage26 allistairc123 is pretty good as well, he makes but cuts on big stuff, cutting to a pretty good accuracy even for 10 ton parts that are being rebuilt.
😳🤯
Surely I’m not the only one here impressed by the perfectly looking circle holes round the 12:10 mark
It is just spectacular what one man in front of camera and one women behind the camera can do all by themselves. You two are truly amazing! Bravo!!
Yup, that's TV / Netflix grade quality of craftsmanship, storytelling, filming and editing!
Behind every man is a great woman
Karen, golden editing at 27:22 when Kurtis leaves left frame edge and then reappears right frame edge in that still shot. Your videography skills match Kurtis's fabrication skills.
I had to chuckle when our lovely photographer reacted to the belt sander reconfiguration. I bet it’s a rare event this many years into the work.
OMG! It does THAT?
Robots in disguise.
This might sound like I'm exaggerating, but this crane project actually taught me that difficult projects are possible if you believe in yourself and it helped me get out of a negative emotional state that I'd been in for literally years. I'm putting my life back together partly because of CEE. Thank you!!
Hey mate Wow, this comment hit us right in the feels. We can't tell you how much it means to hear that the crane project helped you through a tough time. We believe in you and your ability to overcome challenges, and it's incredible to see that reflected in your journey. Keep putting yourself back together, piece by piece. You've got this!
Kurtis will tackle huge projects and it’s awesome to watch. We are all capable of great things. Man I wish I learned this earlier in life.
When eating an elephant, take one bite at a time.
Same with me, I suffer from severe PTSD (Got it from serving in the canadian military) watching this channel allows me to really focus and enjoy life.. Thank you!!!!!!!!
"difficult projects are possible if you believe in yourself..."
Yes, true, but alot of experience and a well equipped workshop also help!
I have been following this project since the beginning. What have I learned in all these 17 episodes?
1. The value of quality work: you are no ‘cutting corners’ here. This is not a quick fix, but a complete overhaul. This is a lesson for life.
2. Aim for the best: If you can do it right, do it right! I see this in what both of you do, Kurtis and Karen.
3. This project has been a lesson on perseverance. Sometimes, the end seems far away, but you have shown us how important is to go on, ‘one step at a time’. Many times, I asked myself when is this disassembling part is going to end? Well, now we are enjoying the assembling part of the project. But to be able to enjoy this video, we had to accept the previous ones. Without them, today’s video wouldn’t have been as rewarding.
4. During the whole process, enjoy the simple things of life. Homeless and the birds are as enjoyable than machining and welding. I could say that without them, the whole project would have been boring!
Finally, I have to say that your field of work is totally different to my job. I work with books, ideas, and people. Not steel and machines. But I’m attracted to your channel because I can feel that yours is a vocation, not just a job. Both of you enjoy what you do. And we, the viewers, can see that.
I expect like me Kurtis goes to “work” for the enjoyment of it as much as paying the bills!
Nobody asked mate 👍
I truly hope Kurtis' customers see his videos, and the level of care he puts into everything he does
I really like the lack of drama. Just professional skill knocking out amazing pieces parts with a camera person chuckling away. The quote below sums it up: "welding goodness". Awesome!!
I’m always amazed by Kurtis’s skills and knowledge. Speaking into a camera seems to be his only weakness… and that’s where Karen comes in. She aces everything else. You two were made for each other. Between the two of you, you have all the bases covered. I really like how you laugh together and are kind to animals. Good hearts ❤️
I think it was the previous video where she said something about using her brain for both of them 😂
I've heard that Homie actually has to show both of them how to do their jobs.
"I’m always amazed by Kurtis’s skills and knowledge" My sentiments exactly. Kurtis has a highly developed mechanical skill and penetrating intuition far greater than most in his field. He's the hardest working person I've ever seen and he makes it look effortless. I sincerely hope all the best for him and his lovely wife who must be proud and grateful to have such a hard working husband. I'm sure he feels likewise with his wife.
I watch an absolute ton of you tube and I have to say that your comments section is the most respectful on you tube. And the fact that you guys bring happiness to such a large cross section of people is a testament to how damn good you guys are. Congrats on killing it 👍👍
Hey mate Thanks so much for the kind words! We reckon we've got the best community on CZcams and thanks for being a part of this awesome community!
Kurtis - Your spacial awareness is incredible - knowing where things are, and position they need to be in. Backing up the forklift at an angle to miss the shipping container - especially fitting the custom boom end inside the RHS in one take, was great. I have to admit, your a cutting torch demon, the circle cutting and pad cutting holes are next-level. Karen, the videography is excellent - you make a wonderful team.
Kurtimedes once said “give me a forklift big enough and I can move the world!” Many thanks for another great episode!
So I'm a physical therapist specialized in psychosomatic complaints. I do a lot of training with people on relaxation and body awareness. In my spare time I'm modding a motor cycle. Welding here and there. Welding - I found to my surprise - is an incredible source of relaxation and mindfulness. And the even more surprising part is when I see and hear Curtis welding my body automatically relaxes. Who would have thought that I can have a relaxation by proxy welding 😃
*Kurtis
Stick to new metal and comfortable positions...a lot of trade welding is anything BUT relaxing. 👍😉
I was a welder in the Navy. I recall replacing the liner in a smoke stack on a destroyer. It was dark, dirty and anything but relaxing!😮😊
A hobby welder thinks it's relaxing because it's not their profession.
Because I'm a hobby welder 😉, it's something I enjoy.
I taught my middle daughter how to weld. In high school, she could weld. Her teacher asked where her skills came from. She said my daddy. Even though she didn't become a welder by trade. She took on the challenge.
She became a Teacher and earned her master's in childhood education.
I also knew many professional welders that did alot of welding in boilers/Boiler makers.
There were some women in that group.
Talk about flyash, working in very confined areas, workwear in proper PPE. My hats off to my fellow workers.
At the end, their eye sight are affected.
Cheers.
I use to weld from 06 to 15 everyday as a metal fabricator !, OK in winter, in summer you had wet undies from start to finish.. very nasty :D
I'm at work at the moment (graveyard Seattle city bus mechanic!) and I'm SO FREAKING EXCITED to go home in the morning, get comfy in my easy chair in my jammies with a cup of tea, and watch the next episode. Thank you Kurtis and Karen AND HOMELESS for hours of fabulous "edutainment".
I've never thought of putting on Jammies before watching a CEC video. Do you guys sell Jammies? Is there a CEC Onezie? Could we buy a Kurtis Uniform?
Is that the gigantic facility down near the W. Seattle Bridge flyover and Boeing Field? You guys do God’s work keeping those buses safe, running & clean. There’s one or two potholes in the area. :-)
@@RaceBanner_ Those are our bases, yes, but I currently work at South Base which is in Tukwila. We go rescue buses in Seattle proper all the time though, as well as much further south. Best job I've ever had.
I am in absolute awe of both of you. Kurtis's freehand flame cutting and his welding are at another level. The pleasure I got from seeing him cut that round hole was marvellous. The delicate and precise handling of the forklift to fit that end unit into the box section was amazing. Karen matches his expertise with her filming and editing and helps with giggles and comments. As for Homeless, he must be the happiest little dog in the world. I can't thank you enough for the hours of pleasure and amusement you've given me.
Anyone else, instantly ‘like’ every video as soon as you’ve pressed play?
Shout out to Karen for the slick editing as always. You don’t go unnoticed 🙌🏼
Hands down one of the greatest fabrication experts I've ever seen in my life, I'm a Sheet Metal Worker in Canada & to say how rare it is to see such craftsmanship & dedication is an understatement. Kurtis has taught me more than 90% of the people I've worked with... all made possible by the outstanding videography of the wonderful & astonishing Karen.
I'm just a simple lawyer and bass player, but I've gotta say that in watching welding/repair/fabrication videos from other guys, I often find myself saying "Hmm, pretty sure Kurtis wouldn't do it like that . . ."
I very much enjoy watching you and Karen working on the boom, feeding the birds, and interacting with Homeless. Keep it coming.
The best part about watching you Kurtis is you remind me so much of the way my Dad went about things. He was a fitter and turner. Built bloody complex machines from basic sketches. Machines that ran for 40 years. Your quiet way of understanding and applying your skills is something I learned from my Dad. I often get a tear in my eye when you do something that reminds me of him. He’s long left us but guys like you help me remember him.
You are a true wizard with that forklift. The way the end block slid into the boom section was incredible to watch.
Right?! That’s some next level driving. 🤯
I am in awe of Kurtis' laser-straight freehand welding! Such a steady hand and constant speed - gas cutting or MIG welding - very inspiring! Thanks for the arty shots to showcase his skills, Karen!!!
The laserstraight cutting is easy to do.
So easy in fact I have made a CNC plasma machine, as all my hand cut parts tend to become one offs (even if I don't want them to)
Competent steady hand. I sometimes sit here and close my eyes when you fire up. Specially when you are tacking out. 46 years of doing it and you can teach an old dog a new trick. Your effort is outstanding.
I don't have the words to express how much joy it brings to my heart to watch a highly skilled and knowledgeable craftsman at work...along with the expertise in filming and editing who brings it into my living room. I love the regular updates of Homie and the magpies day too.
You know you are doing something right when the video is up for 39 seconds and there are 44 likes. To say you have a devoted followers would be a huge under statement. Thanks for the awesome comment and for recognizing the artistry in both the work and the filming. Karen's a master at capturing the details, and it takes a great team to bring the project to life. We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent
"Everything is a hammer" says Kurtis as he knocks off the extra metal with his cutting torch head! 😱🤪
i get the feeling the whole damn crane will rust to pieces before the boom end ever fails.. good work, it's always awesome watching you work! Wish i could come work with you!
The Franna crane definitely needs some stickers of the birds. They deserve it, and it will look nice 👌
If he paints the boom black like the cylinders, the crane and the birds will match!

Is that why he's called Homeless? I've watched the channel for a while and I never knew
Always a pleasure to watch a true professional welding and cutting. I swear, I couldn't have even drawn with a sharpie a rounder shape along the line than the pulley cut was.
Same here - and this guy just freehands that. Sigh ...
He’s like a dang CNC machine and a laser at the same time.

Glad you liked it!
When you cut the hole for the pulley, omg, it looked like you’d cut that hole with a jig or hole saw. Well done, well executed!👍🏼

You take the My Mechanic channels saying, " I'll make a new one " to another level. I love it. Well done to the three of you. This is my kind of "reality tv".
Those two together could build a fusion reactor next week.
I was about to ask "Why 2 sets of 16 mm plates" but decided that Kurtis did the " Cost benefit analysis" and made the best choice, so I should keep watching and learn from the GOAT.
I love this type of content. That you can do the job you enjoy, entertain people, and make some money to do projects like this! Glad to see the subscribers going up as well!
Your show should be mandatory in all schools throughout the world😊
Forklift experience level: Suspiciously accurate
Not sure who gets the most satisfaction from this crane project. Kurtis professionally playing with his toys ? Karen happily recording every angle and creatively editing.? Or us, sitting with a cold one, feet up after a hard day ? Whatever it is, it's sure the best follow on YT at the moment. Thanks for the effort guys.
Thanks for always having just the right balance of real time and accelerated footage 😀. Your wife's giggles are adorable! And the sound she made the first time you transformed the belt sander was classic, like Gomer Pile saying "Well gooooooooollly!", like she was gobsmacked! Thanks for all the great vids guys.
I do be liking the blinging out the Crane project.
The photography from the end of the boom while welding was genius… the sounds alone…
Kurtis, By the time you have finished this machine it will be better than a bought one. Well done.
Like a glove!! I could watch you weld and use your torch to cut all day long. Always amazed how smooth you are and your ability to stay so straight while cutting. Thanks for another great video. Soon the crane will be back together and getting well used.

I like how Curtis bought crane to simply make his own piece by piece. It is basically crane kit. Wouldnt be suprised if he would ended up with two identical cranes. One original and second brand new :D
Exactly! He only bought it to use as a template to build his own! I was just thinking that and saw your comment. 😂
You have to know that Franna is watching both for product as well as process improvement.
@@RaceBanner_ Unless he charges 7k AUD/day*, he also just proved he can make a whole new section for cheaper than Franna can. Depending on material delivery times, he could probably do it faster too!

@@arthurmoore9488 I’m an airline captain and happen to live near a major maintenance base, & I’m friends with many people there. I am forever amazed at what our skilled trades team can create. Frustratingly though, many aviation parts MUST come from OEM or approved suppliers at 10x the cost, and often at a lower quality than what they can build in house. Zero question Kurtis will have one of nicest Franna’s out there.
And - true story - I stopped by maintenance the other day to help out on-the-clock with some improvements testing with the manufacturer, and what was moving a bunch of rebuilt engines around in the run-up bay?

Yeap, I want one. What brand/model?
The ease to which that block slid into the boom was disgusting... Damn good work.
How perfectly the end bit slid into the RHS bit (sorry for the technical jargon hehe) was great. Keep going, this whole project is amazing.
That came out amazing! Kurtis made the fab and welding look easy and Karen's camera work/ editing was incredible as always. Great job guys! Bet you're starting to get excited now, things are starting to go back together!

First time catching an episode just after release. 2:00AM here. Been up with power outages from wicked storms rolling through since around midnight. Nice to see a Frana rebuild update. 🤙
Stay safe mate!
This is slowly turning into a video series called "How to build your own Franna crane 101". Kurtis gives me the confidence that I could do this at home. In my living room. On the couch. 😁🤟
24:19 like a Glove 🥊 😂😂
When he stands up and flips up his welding visor, eyeballing the workpiece, it reminds me of a snooker player standing up and chalking their cue while eyeballing their next shot. 😅
An excellent analogy.
Love watching your videos. I’m a fabricator myself and I’ve actually been doing robotic welding for 29 years. A lot of your welds come damn close to looking like it was robotically welded since they are so straight and clean.
I’m a hobbyist and fabricator at home as well but at work when welding you could say I cheat. Because I’m not holding the weld torch. Plus on long wells I use seam tracking which keeps everything in the joint, nice and consistent.
CHEERS.
This is by far one of the Engineering Fabrication Extraordinire. Most of the machining or other maker videos are either restoring old machines or run-of-the-mill small gadget-making. This is real hands-on, pure craftmanship supreme. In the age of CNC machining and other automated mass manufacturing the skill of the individual is almost disappearing but you and a few others are just a joy to watch and learn. Greeting from USA
Absolutely love the Frana crane project it covers everything in fabrication , loved Karen's reaction didn't know the belt grinder swivelled over 😄 😮
Ah of course the common task of just buying some RHS and knocking up a new boom for a crane over a weekend 😂 this guy is good - guts and determination 👍

Those high-speed shots around the 10:40 mark of Kurtis welding were pretty cool. One can appreciate the experience in technique, in that his arm moves just as smoothly in high-speed as you'd expect if the shot weren't sped up. No wobble. No jerking around. Really fluid.
I'm loving the crane project, thanks guys. So much of the crane needs rebuilding/replacing/modifying I can't help wishing Kurtis had built it from scratch. Yes more work and I confess I'm being greedy wanting Kurtis to show more of his stunning ability :)
That's an awesome build, a lot more complex than I thought it would be, you are a master fabricator, not to mention operator, sliding that front end in with the forklift was something else!
Coming together nicely! Beautiful welds. Perfect fitment. Just some damn nice work. And at a third of the cost by my reckoning (based on what your mate paid). Nice. Thanks for letting us watch and have a great weekend, guys. Cheers.
Congrats to Karen for getting those hard-to-access inside welding shots while Hubby was doing his usual intricate engineering moves. The remake of the boom is marvel. Good on yer both! And that Staffie is entertaining every time. . .
Damn Kurtis...I just got to your welding part in the beginning and had to say what impeccable welding skills you have!! You are a Master!!!!!! All of your work is just beyond reproach...excellent job!!! This is a pretty exciting series.
It is nice to see the rebuild begin versus the tear down and finding more issues that need to be fixed. The content is awesome. I just hope it is still cost-effective versus buying something in better shape or new.
My heart sank when, on top of the cab, you had to redo the boom too.
That said I can still see this being cheaper and less hassle, you're restoring an already approved machine effectively doing rust repair to a car vs technically making a new one, the engineer signoff debacle on material types alone (much less thickness, geometries and all that ooffyiffie) for every single aspect of it would have been absolutely mind blowing.
It's a much appreciated and rare glimpse into how these cranes are built.
Great, it seems my mind now has a direct connection between "a new CEE video" and "unwinding after a work week". Just saw it pop up in the feed and immediately got the "weekend is starting" feeling, even though it's just Friday morning. :D
Glad to see i am not the only one that uses the torch head to tap out the hole plugs, thank for the great vidios every week.
Wow. Just wow. Welding inside that boom arm gives me inspiration to keep building my welding skills. I hate welding in tight spaces, but it can clearly be done well. Thanks!
Am I impressed or what, I never thought I'd see one guy put together one of these booms. Bloody fantastic Kurtis.
This going to be the sweetest little yard crane ever!
That boom end is looking FABULOUS, very nice!
