    Because Mordor stole all the doors from Gondor, so now all the doors in Gondor are gone, and Mordor has more doors.

    Would you please consider doing a “What If Sam Kept The One Ring?” video, Matt? I know it likely means a spectrum of ever darkening alternate endings, but I’d love to see where you take it by using the primary text as well as any and all Tolkien letters that reference Sam’s character, his loyalty to Frodo, and his interactions with the One Ring.
    What would happen if Sam never witnessed Gorbag and crew retrieving Frodo’s paralyzed body, and he truly believed Shelob killed Frodo? How would the last stage of his presumably tragic journey change his fate and the fates of Frodo, Gollum, the Fellowship, the Shire and all of Middle Earth? Would Sam make it through Mordor to the peak of Mount Doom? Where and how would he confront Gollum? Would he sacrifice himself to destroy the Ring if presented with the opportunity, or would he keep it? And perhaps most tragically, how would it change Sam’s heart and spirit?
    Apologies if you’ve already done something like this and I missed it. Just point me where to find it!

    Speaking of Gondor, you should really do a "What if Boromir took the ring?". I would really like to know what Boromir would have done if he had actually succeeded in taking the One Ring from Frodo. Whether he would knock out Frodo or kill him doesn't matter, he would most likely escape just in time to avoid the orc attack. But what would he do? Would he give the ring to Denethor, or would he be tempted by the ring to kill his father Arthas- style and usurp the throne. What would the Fellowship do? Would the orcs still capture Merry and Pippin, and possibly Frodo too this time, or would things be different? Would the rest of the Fellowship go after the hobbits, or would they pursue Boromir to Gondor. What would Gondor do with the Ring? These are some interesting questions. I'd like to know your thoughts.

      At some point Gondor had watch towers and fortifications in and around Mordor. I think those were more to guard against evil re-inhabiting the land rather than to occupy or settle it.

      Mordor had been under Sauron's control for thousands of years before Gondor was founded. I doubt anyone would even want to try and live there as bad as it must have been.

    Something of a mental exercise, what would the Realm on Gondor be like if the Last Alliance had seen the destruction of Sauron and The One Ring? The early part of the Third Age would see Gondor subservient to Arnor. Many Elves would leave to go into the West. This would see the dwindling of Elves in Middle Earth. Gondor's main enemy would be the Black Numenoreans. I suspect a secret alliance with Orcs would have been made to put pressure on both Gondor and Arnor. With Arnor having a smaller population, this would be a serious situation for the joint realm.

    Learning the history of Denethor's resentment towards Aragorn makes me realize how short-changed the final Steward was in the movie. I think that would be okay in regard to the theatrical cut, but I wish the extended editions of Two Towers and Return of the King had fleshed out that aspect of his past to give his character more dimension.

      In the books, upon meeting Denethor Pippin thinks to himself that Denethor looked more like a great Wizard than Gandalf did. Gandalf tells Pippin that regardless the generations between, the blood of Numenor ran nearly pure in Denethor, and in Faramir also. The great cares Denethor was burdened with, losing his wife, and later his son Boromir, and especially using the palantir giving Sauron the opportunity to poison his mind with fear and dread all had made him the way he had become by the time of the War of the Ring.

      @@captainflamson That really should have been included in the ROTK movie. Audiences would have already been very familiar with Saruman's ability to poison Men's minds, and that would have made Denethor's descent into madness and subsequent suicide even more tragic.

    In the German translation the Gondorians name for Amon Amarth is basically "Mount Destiny". I am not sure if Tolkien was involved in this change. He was involved in the change from Shelob to Kankra in German - because he was aware that the sound of the word does not connect with a spiderlike being in German - Kankra does work much better.

    • @twell1984
      @twell1984 Před 3 měsíci +2

      Do you mean "Schicksalsberg" for Mount Doom? I don't think that is a change. A "doom" is someone's fate or ultimate destiny, at least in the original sense of the word.
      That is a cool fact about Shelob, though!

    • @istari0
      @istari0 Před 3 měsíci +1

      If memory serves, the capitol remained in Minas Tirith. The rule being in the north was only true for a couple of centuries until the kingdoms split after Isildur's death, which was 3000 years before Aragorn's reign began.
