- Hey guys! Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’ll be discussing all 10 of the different types of Dragons that were either shown, discussed, or mentioned in the Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts films/books.
As we know, Dragons are giant, winged fire breathing beasts that incite fear in the hearts of even the bravest witches and wizards. They bear the potential to be extremely destructive, and they are even classified as category XXXXX by the Ministry of magic.
However, they're also a gravely important aspect of the series - The Hogwart's motto is even based around dragons! 'Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus’ literally translates to ‘never tickle a sleeping dragon’.
So, with dragons being so prevalent in the series, if you are anything like me, you’ve probably asked yourself: how many types of dragons are there? Well, you’ve come to the right video - let’s dive in to it.

Finally, a video about dragons. But I think the common whels green dragon is the only dragon you domesticated, because he is the most calm of all dragons and in Nederlands his name is like housedragon. And not to big, so i believe you can make him your pet and ally
having something as a pet is different from domestication
you can have a pet tiger but it isn't a domesticated tiger

Though, as we eventually find out... "Norbert" was a female, not a male. And Charlie later told Hagrid she had been rechristened Norberta.
The Horntail must be particularly mean if even Hagrid says that it's bad.
Honestly, when I first saw some of the dragon breeds, I was heavily reminded of certain dragon tribes in the Wings of Fire series. Welsh Greens reminded me of LeafWings, Chinese Fireballs of SkyWings, Hebridean Blacks of NightWings, and Swedish Shortsnouts of IceWings.
There are some glaring differences between Harry Potter and Wings of Fire, though. In the latter series, dragons and humans are actually "rivals" for dominating their world, both being sentient and sapient creatures, though there is an obvious language barrier. There are no signs of humans having magic in WoF despite the existence of dragons that *do* have magic or otherwise supernatural abilities. And for having so many aspects related to dragons in the Harry Potter series, they don't have nearly as much of a spotlight as you'd expect; anything involving them is a side-plot at best.
The “scavengers” or “reading monkeys” really don’t seem to be powerful rivals, the dragons seem to have an extreme advantage in the series in general

With the first one, I’m starting to wonder how the Aus/NZ ministry of magic deals with them. Assuming their scales resemble Australian Black Opals (it makes sense to me an opal-themed dragon living in Aus/NZ will bare resemblance to Aus/NZ opals) their shiny, colourful, fire breathing, and somewhat large in comparison to how tiny and delicate native flora and fauna is. Not to mention NZ has a lot of open farmland for sheep and cows, and I seriously doubt a few gumtrees here and there, and maybe an occasional hill or mountain regions is gonna be enough to hide those bad boys.
Edit: also, for anyone not from NZ, farmers have been watching livestock a lot more closely due to a decline in numbers over the last few decades, so a dragon coming and taking like half of their farm isn’t gonna go unnoticed lol
Video suggestion (maybe not to much content, but what do i know): The role of witches and wizzards in the two world wars. I wonderd about that when you said in the video about the ministers of magic, that many wizzards stayed not neutral despite the order of the minister of magic..
What i was always curious about is how wandmakers get the heartstrings or the potionmakers/regular people the blond and organs of dragons
Are they kept somewhere like cattle and killed when the have a decent sice or are they actively hunted?
I know there are mentions of dragon reserves but those seem just to be for study
Probably naturally died/slaughtered when near death in the dragon reserves

I live in Asia, I'm not highly impressed when the Chinese Fireball isn't a true Chinese dragon as that looks more like a western dragon.
I like to imagine the Chinese fireball to look more like the Chinese dragons, since it can also be called the Lionhead, and Chinese dragons have those manes around their heads.
Well, the dragons in the film are made 'realistic' and not as ridiculous as the creatures in the DnD series or so. The Chinese dragon, while cool, is too crazy to create a believable creature. It would be impossible to subdue such a creature. The dragons in the Harry Potter universe are more like overpowered dinosaurs, strong, but not overly so.
It's mostly a movie adaptation
The fact that Chinese dragon eyes look like Chinese people kinda messed up
I'd like to think they're a mixed breed that managed to take off cuz we know chinese dragons shoot water, not fire.
Norbert is actually Norbetta, as revealed in the goblet of fire.
I'm curious about what is canon when it comes to the body plan of dragons in the Harry potter universe. In the films and Hogwarts mystery they are wyverns but in the illustrations, that look like they come from an official book, they have 4 legs and 2 wings.

I hope that the new fantastic beasts movie shows more dragons and other aspects of the magical world that we did not see in the Harry Potter movies
I imagine there more breeds of dragons than just these. The UK has two breeds but North America, India and Africa have none? I think Rowling needs to put a bit more on the list.

I like the Horntail myself. I'm curious though, JKR goes to great lengths to establish that snakes have a speakable language - parseltongue, but I wonder if the same is true of Dragons? Surely they must also have a language that wizards could learn?

3:15 Cool artwork of the Ilfracombe Incident. That was a Welsh Green dragon going for a beach of Muggle sunbathers and the Magical Correctional Squad had to clean up the mess and modify the memories of the witnesses.

Great vid. I love the dragons kn HP and especially the scene where they escape from gringots. Can you make a video on what happened with lucios and some other deatheaters after the battle of Hogwarts? And I asked my self how Luna could make it back to Hogwarts after she escaped from the Malfoy mansion because I think it is kinda weird that she is just back at the school after she escaped.
Wonder if there are any dragons in Mexico or Central America? The "plumed serpent" Quetzalcoatl is clearly draconic.

Dragons have always been my fav Fantasy Creature. With that said, the Harry Potter Version have always seemed more like extra large Wyverns than actual Dragons. (I know some Realms evolve Dragons that make do with 2 Legs just fine & some evolve in a way to where they find evolutionarily tactical use for Wings with ability to cling to Hill/Mountain Sides, but i'm most accustomed to the more normal traditional 4-Legged variety.) As for my fav Breed, haven't got to interact with them enough to be able to make a call on that as of the time of this Comment, sadly. I can say however the Hungarian Horntail looks the most awesome & warriorish to me. :D
It would be interesting to know where the dragon preserves are. I'm sure Romania isn't the only place.

7:20 I remember doing something similar in the LEGO Harry Potter game. I built this dog out of bricks which caused the dragon to sweep its tail; this destroyed the dog as well as the wall it was standing near, thus allowing me to pass.
I always wished for the topic of dragons to be more extensively explored in the books, I remember when I made my Pottermore account one could get a Patronus through a little fun interactive quiz, and alongside this one could get sorted into both Hogwarts and Ilvermorny houses, and out of these I got results I didn't really like, but I had to keep the account when I got a dragon as the patronus, it was too good to let go.
Hebridean Blacks are without a doubt the most beautiful. Obsidian and deep DEEP purple scales and Lavender eyes. They look evil in every sense of the word but have a beauty about them that is absolutely astonishing.

dragons in movies and TV shows so rarely have all six limbs. in harry potter, hobbit, game of thrones and even witcher, they all have just wings and one pair of legs.
maybe the second pair would cost too much to animate, or calling wyvern a dragon is just as acceptable as calling a forktail a dragon.
