"When They See Us": Ava DuVernay tried to "humanize" Central Park Five

  • In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were wrongly accused of the brutal rape of a jogger in New York City’s Central Park. Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise became known as the Central Park Five. The boys were charged and convicted with no physical evidence implicating them. But in 2002, their convictions were overturned after DNA evidence and a confession exonerated them. Director Ava DuVernay joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss her Netflix four-part series on the Central Park Five, "When They See Us."

Just because you are just finding out about doesn't mean you can start projecting. We have been talking about or brother's unjust imprisonment and there's plenty of their interview's over the years on black radio and media.... it's just now that their story is being shared fully in a cinematic way. Lots to unpack here. First, Gayle proves that there are ALL kinds of Black people. That she stated she believed this story is incredulous. M'am, you are a reporter. I was an average citizen and I could see this was a travesty. Sheesh. I've lost respect for her and certainly won't trust her reporting or analysis of a situation. The questions from the other 2 hosts: why were they crying, etc, speaks volumes. People have more empathy for Tomi Loren and Felicity Huffman than these men who suffered unspeakable indignities. The final straw, "try to humanize". They are human. I learned a lot from this interview about the mindset of folk delivering the news.

It wan't unusual hearing about racial profiling and blatant discrimination. I learned how to stand up against it after I got much older. I didn't learn about the cruelty and abuse in the penal system until age 19. I did a class paper on the Attica prison riot of 1971. While the media works for many they can be completely biased. This is happening now here in Chicago, and elsewhere. #FreeGeraldReed, here in Chicago who was tortured by police to "confess" to a crime he did not commit. There are 140 or more Black and brown men who were framed, tortured, and placed in prison because of police crimes. We demand full community control of the police, #CPAC. My heart goes out to the families and these young men whose lives were damaged by a cruel form of anti-Black racism, enabled by an individual and the newspaper who allowed these ads to be published.
