"When They See Us": Ava DuVernay tried to "humanize" Central Park Five

- In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were wrongly accused of the brutal rape of a jogger in New York City’s Central Park. Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise became known as the Central Park Five. The boys were charged and convicted with no physical evidence implicating them. But in 2002, their convictions were overturned after DNA evidence and a confession exonerated them. Director Ava DuVernay joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss her Netflix four-part series on the Central Park Five, "When They See Us."

Ava DuVernay is untouchable!! She’s doing God’s work honestly, and I’m so proud to be able to watch her work.
I felt that too! She is doing Gods work
She is a liar the docu series is full of redactions and non truths...The boyz confessed in the police vehicle before getting to the station and all she is doing is trying to make trump look bad
Truth
@@eddiemac-637 That is not true. They confessed to being in the park..They didn't get any confessions until after they coerced them! I rememer it very well! Unbelievable how so many will go with your story only because they want to make it so! The retelling of this story will open up a lot of closed doors and expose many lies told by the police and the prosecution. Then we'll wait for your story!
Edward Kigozi There’s a reason they won $40 million in the settlement you troll
“What were they crying for?” Duh! Six to thirteen years spent in prison for a crime they didn’t commit!!!
Yeah I didn't understand that question and most questions they asked it seems like they didn't understand
Now that is a *dehumanizing* question that was posed to her
This is the perfect example of the ignorance of the press - that was an ignorant question 😡
Actually, I think he asked that so that Ava could explain to the viewing public why they were crying.
When he asked that stupid question I actually yelled at my screen and had the same reaction Ava did. If after knowing the facts about the case, knowing the men are watching their stories being told, and you don’t/can’t comprehend why they would be crying, you sir, are part of the problem and the reason why black and brown folks’ (WHO ARE HUMAN) stories have to be told in its entirety to be humanized because When They See Us they don’t see humans!
This story should never be forgotten. It tells you a lot about race, the justice system, human nature, etc...
melissabelton how about the duke lacrosse players?
@Dirg Ramsey Are You SERIOUS. You compare The Duke Lacrosse players to the Central Park 5?? There is NO comparison!! Duke players weren't railroaded into spending Years of their lives in Prison with Trump saying Execute them even after found INNOCENT. WOW!! You are really Reaching.
@@dirgramsey6132 what's that story?
@@dirgramsey6132 The Duke Lacrosse story was told and retold. That women was never really taken too seriously. Rich people will always have the upper hand. Two different kinds of story. WATCH this movie and you may understand. I doubt it though. Typical!
Look up George Stinney, his case was even more devastating
Ava DuVernay has mad skills as a filmmaker. She knocked it out the park on this one.
She did amazing
waveali I cried for my grandson too after this movie. I will insist that we re watch this one together!
Yeah also the actor playing Korey Wise did an awesome work....
I agree. Most powerful show/doc I've seen this year. I wasn't even born yet back then but i feel like i was in the trenches with those guys. So much pain and evil.
@SmittyMcBittyB lol what are you talking about the central park five's innocence has been talked about for year's since they were proven not guilty, especially the last few because of the liar in cheif's comments about him. Just because you are just finding out about doesn't mean you can start projecting. We have been talking about or brother's unjust imprisonment and there's plenty of their interview's over the years on black radio and media.... it's just now that their story is being shared fully in a cinematic way. Clearly your not black to even make that comment so why are u mad? I could post a interview from a few years back that have hundreds of thousands of views that debunk you......you want me to?
The title of the this video is a insult to Ava DuVernay. Why do you have "humanize" in quotation and say she tried to do it?!
This is why we are in need of diversity in our media, in front of the camera, behind the camera and in every area of a news organization.
Linda, I want to take it a step further and say independent thinkers who are not compromised and or afraid to challenge the narrative. Good luck finding them.
I think they meant this for the people who STILL have animosity towards these young men. She's trying to humanize them for those idiots.
I didn't even read the full thing til I read your comment. You sure right.
Yeah it doesn’t look rite
I know right, because it's a slick way of the press included not having to admit their wrongdoing. The press is one of the major ones who was flaming heat to the fire ti the point alot of their families had to leave newyork because of the constant harrassment of the press and other citizens calling them rape sympathizers.
“What are they crying for????”That was a DUMB question.
Very dumb smh
Relle White experience and black (or latino) experience are not at all the same. A stupid, but honest question, I think. It's hard to realize what other people live on daily basis, when you've always lived a very protected life yourself.
For real
You do news don’t you lol smh I can’t he said that
Very white of him
What a bad interview. The questions were so out of touch.
they ALWAYS are tho
Agreed
It's needed. Some of the audience is out of touch and they need to spoon feed them.
Why? Those were basic questions? But I did want them to talk about the system and why the city didn't apologise for it nor did the prosecutor.
Erin Bailey It really was just awful. Made me sick watching it.
Lots to unpack here. First, Gayle proves that there are ALL kinds of Black people. That she stated she believed this story is incredulous. M'am, you are a reporter. I was an average citizen and I could see this was a travesty. Sheesh. I've lost respect for her and certainly won't trust her reporting or analysis of a situation. The questions from the other 2 hosts: why were they crying, etc, speaks volumes. People have more empathy for Tomi Loren and Felicity Huffman than these men who suffered unspeakable indignities. The final straw, "try to humanize". They are human. I learned a lot from this interview about the mindset of folk delivering the news.
thebalm it's sad that when some black people reach a certain status they seem to forget things.
Me too.. this is nuts! Between the tone deaf stupid questions and Gayle's obviously oblivious reality to her skin color.. whoa!!
Here comment didn't surprise me. Considering some of the stupid stuff she had said in the past.
This is Oprah's bestfriend I'm not surprised
You all are truly a pack of idiots. You have no idea what she has gone through, and what she was thinking when she saw the news reports. Only idiots get mad at another person's opinion and experience. Damn fools!
This was one of the worst interviews I've ever seen in my life. These are seasoned veterans of journalism? "What were they crying about?" "Do you think this could happen again?" Do some sort of research.
hekeptme4u probably why she declined comments on the follow up of Fairstein’s backlash
Yes, & one of the "Journalists" did not know tRump had made a comment about while he was a Candidate & he refused to apologize. How ignorant & unprepared for the interview.
Yes ....!!! and they talking all over each other.
They got rid of the other 2 to please Gayle, so this is what you get. 🤷🏽♀️
Wow Gayle believed everything in that story! We are so surprised smh! GTFOH Gayle!
It’s not hard for Gayle to believe it. The stories that developed about the rape was so one sided, and when you hear the same thing over and over and over and over again, without any counter stories, you will start to eventually believe it.
@Big Mesh - Gayle's comment really sickened me. She must have been seriously living in a bubble if she believed everything said about those boys back then and never once thought they didn't do it. Never once? Her willful ignorance is disturbing.
Gayle has always been like that I feel she has a deep hatred for blackmen
The evidence was and is still against them. Big money interests are involved in keeping you confused and angry. The victim believes the cp5 were involved in her attack and for good reason. Avu is erasing the real victim here.
@@meka1002 facts the same for Oprah. U notice gayle king never critiques white men but she is quick to critique black men. She is a compromised bedwench willing to do the bidding for white daddy
well netflix got a win in this one.
Kevin Dimla Hope they do this is a powerful story... ❤️
Emmy material, with Oprah and DeNiro producers?(saw the credits) No doubt.
Netflix always release good movies and shows on black history which I like about Netflix.
The victims got a win
Yes, they made a lot of money off this fictional version of six gang-rapists who almost murdered an innocent jogger, and then were given millions of dollars and turned into heroes by idiots like you.
The quotes around "humanize" are annoying. The brutalizing of these boys, and their need to be humanized does not need quotes.
Lara Stapleton Thank you!
Agree!
Lara Stapleton ikr.... LIKE.... WTF ?!!🙄🤔🤷🤦
White man ask "What were they crying about" come on white man SMH
Fred Felton III ‘come on white man’ LMFAOOO
Yes that was a very stupid question he asked but whats coming to those that oppress the innocent will be much worse for them I truly believe that.!!!!!!!
Yes I was like I know he done lost his mind
for real I dont like to make race comments like this but I literally thought ugh only a white person would ask that question
I just cringe☹️
I have never watched something that made me sooo sad, so angry, especially the first episode. My God, how did we allow that to happen to those boys... i felt sick to my stomack and i am still very sad...
Having said that, what a master piece! Everything, writing, performances, its the show of the year on netflix!
I just want to hug those kids!
Ms. Duvarney, keep bringing us more pearls and diamonds like this.
And Thank you!!
Love from Brazil
Pois é o mais triste é saber que ainda podem ter pessoas na mesma situação,quando os que deviam estar presos, estão aí livres
Yeah, that movie left me spiritually shook for...going on 3 days now. I remembered the story 'cause I used live in NY. I didn't follow the story/case in depth back then, instead I read only the highlights which vaguely mentions the evidence found did not match the boys' DNA. Therefore, like most people back then I believed the verdict. And I greatly apologize to those boys who are men now if they're reading this.
@@enuphsayd9746 Great that you admitted it just like Gayle. You read and saw what they gave you. I didn't follow the story that much because I always felt that they were just a few more innocent young black men sent up. There were so many in my life. I grew up during the civil rights era. It wan't unusual hearing about racial profiling and blatant discrimination. I learned how to stand up against it after I got much older. I didn't learn about the cruelty and abuse in the penal system until age 19. I did a class paper on the Attica prison riot of 1971. While the media works for many they can be completely biased. Sometimes it does takes doing your own research before drawing any conclusions.
@@locadisa Thank you for that. Stay bless 🙂
It’s been happening for centuries unfortunately. They saw black skin and that’s all it took
This white man said "what where they crying for"........... he needs the BIGGEST side eye. wtf!!!!!
Did he really ask the question, "can this kind of thing happen now?" When did it stop?
The title SUCKS!!! FIX IT CBS!! Now... Ava is brilliant as always!! 'What are they crying for?" stupid question.... Get it together CBS This Morning... ya'll sound foolish
I agree! The documentary by Sarah Burns and Ken Burns gives a clear eye view of what happened.
Yeah, she said she wanted to humanize them. Since folks see black men as criminals. czcams.com/video/1hf-bLR668g/video.html
Also they promoted Linda's new book as well. So not surprised 😒
EXACTLY! But this is what they do
*IF YOU HAVE BLACK CHILDREN*
*MAKE SURE THAT THEY KNOW* *TO NEVER EVER TALK TO THE*
*POLICE WITH OUT A PARENT OR*
*LAWYER PRESENT AND THAT IT*
*IS THEIR RIGHT TO ASK FOR*
*REPRESENTATION. THEIR LIVES*
*DEPEND ON THEM KNOWING*
*THIS*
Ain't that the truth, already talking to them
Gayle King you and Oprah have a habit of going along with popular belief. Same way you believe the documentary Neverland🙄
Tracee Clay they both rub me the wrong way
Truuuuuue
I never trusted Oprah she's sneaky, petty and messy.
I see a pattern here. You'll defend literally anyone with black skin no matter what kind of atrocities they commit, including gang rape and child molestation. Let me guess, you also think OJ, Cosby, and R Kelly are all innocent too, right?
I NEVER ONCE BELIEVED THEY WERE GUILTY...NEVER! My heart broke when they were convicted!
S B exactly, these boys were robbed of their youth and it’s so so sad!!
None of us believed that BS Gayle K isn't human.
Well a whole lot of other self hating black people did believe they were guilty.
Me either!
DNA didn't believe they didn't either
"When They See Us" is so tough to watch. Still can't finish the first episode.
the final part is soooo hard to watch. My heart literally broke.
Yessss the first and last were so tough I cried and cried. Cory my goodness how did he survive that. I want to just hug him.
@@LifeofAaron me too
I stayed up all night watching. But I can't go through that again. It's too painful. : (
Bracing myself. The trick I hear is to not binge watch it.
Just watch, then break and do something pleasant and positive.
whenever Ms Ava is working on something and talking about it. I always seat, pay attention, listen, and watch the work... i have so much respect for her ART and the Gift she is.
God bless
Did that news anchor really just ask "what were they crying for?" I can't 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ 😱😱
White folks!
Can it happen again? Uh yea Khalif Browdery may he RIP!
It happens every day!!
He died? Oh My
@@beautyforashestv5959 he committed suicide
@@MZDezi1010 Whaaat. Due to the things he suffered in prison probably. 😢
@@beautyforashestv5959 Basically. Its a documentary on Netflix check it out
The fact that Gail thought they was guilty ..... Speaks volumes of her mindset.. And what influences her...
And really sits me back rethink things she said and done..
All skin folks, aren't kin folks!
They are guilty.
This is happening now here in Chicago, and elsewhere. #FreeGeraldReed, here in Chicago who was tortured by police to "confess" to a crime he did not commit. There are 140 or more Black and brown men who were framed, tortured, and placed in prison because of police crimes. We demand full community control of the police, #CPAC. My heart goes out to the families and these young men whose lives were damaged by a cruel form of anti-Black racism, enabled by an individual and the newspaper who allowed these ads to be published.
@masterp@1ne and you my dear, nameless and faceless person are what we commonly refer to as part of the problem. and even further, you are a coward unafraid to stand behind your snide, mean remarks--with a faceless avatar. I pray for your lonely and sad heart.
I can barely watch this, my God, what a horror these children went through. Never forgot this story.
Dude really........what were they crying for? SMDH cluelessness journalism!
I need to know who wrote the caption for this video? 🤔
edit: the way the media has always been set up to make you believe things that aren't true, Gayle.
I cannot wait to see it. so happy they were exonerated and paid! 💙💙💙💙💙💙✊🏾
Some klansman
ToshaTheBeautiful lmfao Ayo When she said she believed what the TV was saying about those boys I got ridiculously heated, she’s so stupid.... first of all you’re absolutely right that’s what the media does.. secondly that’s wtf SHE does !??!!??!!!? I can’t stand her
The first thought when I read the title. To the person that did, Don't do this again. You don't have to try so hard!!! You will not be successful in this way.
the only reason i clicked on this mess y3ni like ava duvernay's face in the thumbnail is my reaction to reading that title
@@frenchblueee She boldly admitted to something that many will not do,even under these circumstances. I must commend her for her truthful comments and knowing that Oprah helped produce this movie.Perfect time to admit it! Our own president will not admit it and many of his followers wouldn't either. They just keep listening to his trash talking speeches and praising him for what he says he's going to do. No different. Why get mad? That was 1989. This is NOW!
Her work is brilliant. Thank you for having her, and making that mini-series.
Whoever wrote this caption needs to be fired!
Of course, Gayle thought they were guilty.
“What were they crying for”..... huh??!!
Its not enough to apologize, you have to stand up and help change the system. Those cops knew they didn't do it but still continued to go forward with the prosecution.
They have refused to apologize to this day!
Gail just make me sick. She believes anything instead of researching. Great! Job Avav
Rosalind Robinson right to make herself look good
Breaks my heart...
The title is awful and the questions asked...like damn did you do your research. “What were they crying about?” Tf do you mean ? What do you think, to finally be exonerated for a crime they did not commit seeing their side of the told after these years.
So glad she showed the footage of 45 in the series which showed how cruel he is!
Me too
This interview was horrible, "what did they cry for?" "I thought they were guilty" they rushed their questions spoke over each other like she only had 30 seconds this was horrible.
They needed that interview to be over fast
To think, President "No Evidence" Trump took out 4 FULL PAGE ADS in 4 different publications to call for the death penalty... Some decent human being "we" voted for.
The Electoral College put him in office. Him being there is not the will of the ppl.
It hurts. It hurts. It hurts. Still.
Same ole story.
has anybody been in contact with the lady that this crime was committed to! what's her side of this story?? all itimadation by the police to get an arrest for the public! got to look like we're on the job! like the police can't use scare tactics to get a fabricated confession?? really!! can i take an ad out in the news paper advocating the impeachment of the president for the wrong he's done!! that's proven!!! and that's REAL news.. he might throw a tantrum...for tellin the truth! peace.
This series was undeniable needed for all black boys and men to watch ..
This could still happen today .
This story was so heartbreaking but so beautiful because of the strength these five boys/men had/have thank you for telling their stories.
Great job Ava, you held a broken mirror up for all to see the injustice of institutional racism. This story broke my heart 💔! Cudoos to you👍.
Why in the heck is humanize in "parentheses"??? 🤔 That's racist! They are HUMAN!! Gayle I don't know, I feel like you're taking L's by saying you never believed them! That's disappointing! Also who the heck asks "why we're they crying??" Wow!! Seriously?
Love&Light LG
The word is in quotes, because they were quoting Ava's use of the word. The young men were portrayed as other than human, and she said in this interview that she wanted to humanize them. As I said, I think she will be successful in doing so.
I cannot wait to watch this series. Anything by Ava DuVernay is amazing and breathtaking!!

priceless I saw it more as an honest question from a white man who won't get it before someone tells him, because It Is Not His Experience. Nor mine. We need to hear these story's or how would we learn?
And it's cruical we learn.
@@flugsven They were present and involved in the rape. Learn that.
Is anyone surprised that Gayle Koon ... I mean King initially believed these innocent gentlemen were guilty. Also the intention behind the title of this video is EXTREMELY suspect.
I'm not surprised, in a previous video she openly said outloud that she thinks what happened to Bob Marley's granddaughter wasn't racist at all.
Gayle koon...😅😅😅😅
To be honest and to be real the news back then made them same so guilty
Damn! That's a grown woman beauty and body! Ava is a black goddess!
No other kind. 🐖 skins aren’t children of God. They’re mutations
She got a fatass too
And no apology from the cops who coerced them to lie..
That prosecutor went on to become a fictional crime story author. I hope that all who took part of these boys ill fate lived a miserable life thereafter.
Ms.winemaker they just recently took a very prestigious award from Linda Feinstein because of this documentary...I was like good😊
May their conscious eat them up and beyond death, eternally.
“Tried”?
I was living in NY, and I too remembered that story. I too apologize to those boys now men bc I too believed the news. This miniseries is a must see. You'll cry, feel angry and sad for these boys.
Binged the whole thing at 1 in the morning and let me just tell you that by the end I cried so much my bed sheets were literally soaked in tears and my eyes hurt so much I couldn't keep them open. I spent the first 50 minutes of the last episode just crying nonstop. Such a touching series that was executed so well by Ava and the actors 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This really touched and moved me, soke parts I couldnt sit through but watched with watery eyes. Seeing koreys time in jail broke me...i cant even imagine how they feel. I hope they are healing, no amount of money can undo what they went through.
“What were they crying for?” 🤦🏾♂️ dumbest thing ever
I just finished watching the series on netflix it's so sad bought tears to my eyes God Bless All Of Them 🙏
Just go off watching this and I havent cried so much in a long time. What Korey Wise went through is so tragic. But each of them have done so much since there release I'm proud of them

Man black people have been through a lot
Please, if you haven't seen the show, go and watch it now! Ava and the team did an amazing and incredible job of portraying all aspects of their lives - before, during, after. From the interrogations, the "interactions" with THAT DA, the trial, the effects on their families, their time in prison. What it was like when they got out. I learned a lot and realized there was a lot I didn't know. And yes, this could still happen today and still does. This is why it's important for these stories to be told. Please watch When They See Us.
Watch the AIU series about this case. It's actually factual.
Thank you Ava For being a great spirit and telling this story and bringing TRUTH toLIGHT.
Ya' know....Gail & Oprah are batting a thousand here lately.....really starting to become a joke in their own community.
🗣️it's still happening now✊🏾✊🏾
I just watched this and it was beautifully told. It made me cry being a mother of a black young man it hit home. It was amazing to watch and they definitely deserve a apology money can't bring back that time nor erase those awful experiences.

Can this happen again?
Yes: This Is America it is still happening and have been happening and will continue to happen. Just look at the innocent project.
Ava brings a story to life and more. She really does her best and this show was painfully Great. So sad what these boys had to endure. =(
It was brilliantly put together. I loved it
This was so deep. For these men to have did time and someone to Confess to the crime. And people still felt they had some part in it. Smh so sad. And for trump to get into this and never say sorry. What goes around comes back around.
You all should really take "humanized" out of the quotes. Comes off kind of mocking...just saying.
Ava Duvernay stays being my inspiration as a black woman with many stories I want to tell!
I am so grateful that she responded to that tweet!
She is a very intelligent woman, I applaud her for making such a show that really expressed the emotion and the truth of this situation. This show really brought so many years put of my eyes. 💜
Glad that Gale was honest enough to mention that she believed everything that was put out about these young men ? As many did. I was really young at the time, but always gave them the benefit of the doubt. When they were found guilty something in my soul didn't believe it. NYC had a lot of dirty cops. These men deserve to be able to hold their heads high with out a cloud over it. They need an official apology from the city!
The main prosecutor was a woman. Cops are idiots, she shouldn't be.
Thank you Ms. DuVernay for always telling our stories in an honest and impactful way.
I started watching this in Netflix and couldn't finish the first episode. I was filled with so much hate and rage that I couldn't continue to watch what they were doing to those boys. I ended up crying myself to sleep and then sleeping terribly that night. The whole thing is heartbreaking.
Bravo Ava for this story. I will always remember the injustice of what happened to these young men at the time and how they had to survive afterwards.
