- Five men who were wrongfully convicted when they were just teens for the 1989 rape of a jogger in New York City are telling their story through the new Netflix series "When They See Us."
Two of the five men, who now live in Atlanta, sat down with 11Alive's LaPorsche Thomas to discuss overcoming trauma, Linda Fairstein, steps toward justice and more.
The men were exonerated in 2002.

I've seen comments condemning Yusef because kory wasn't bailed out, wasn't kept from making a statement, and served the longest time; as if Yusef had any control or comprehension at the time. A 15 y/o. When my sons was 15 he would'vebeen doe-eyed, catatonic, and scared out of his mind.. One commenter said Yusef never apologized, as if anyone but those 2 know, smh. These were KIDS. How dare anyone criticize any of them. Had it been an accusation of a fight at school and grilled by the principal considering expulsion, that would've been scary enough. But RAPE & SODOMY at the NYPD with seasoned detectives!!!! Come on.
K C Francis exactly what I have been thinking. Yusef was also a kid, he acted how he knew best and he acted under his moms supervision later and honestly I think the mom was just trying to protect her son (as much as we don’t agree) the best way she knew how.

I really appreciated them using the same actor to play young and adult Korey.
To me the change of actor for the other characters represented their metamorphosis into adulthood. They went into the system as kids and quickly had to adapt and grow up to cope.
Wheras Korey being thrown into the adult system never had a chance. His emotional and psychological growth was stunted as a result. Therefore he never really 'grew up'.
Even the actor who played Korey stated that the man seemed 'stuck in the 90s'.

When you see Korey, he looks so haunted. I constantly pray for healing for all of them... But especially for him. They were failed by everyone. The only one that had compassion is the one who did it.

The Central Park 5 did not have a "lack of physical evidence". Nor were they innocent/exonerated by DNA evidence... you can simply go back and watch their testimonies along with the 28 other boys if you are confused about that.
1. Female blood similar to the joggers on 2 of the boys shoes.
2. DNA had just begun to be used as evidence 6 months before this case so police were not trained how to keep a crime scene pristine back then.
3. 2 of the boys had female genital pubic hair on them that matched the jogger.
4. 3 of the boys had semen in their underwear.
5. The boys were not beaten to get a confession out, they weren't starved either, the questioning wasn't harsh or manipulative (it's on video), the parents were also IN THE ROOM!
6. There were 95 witnesses that testified... most were eye witnesses but there was also Melody Jackson, whose brother was friends with Korey Wise, she testified that she talked to Wise by phone when he was at Rikers Island and that he told her that he didn't rape the jogger, he "only held her legs down while Kevin (Richardson) f*cked her. He only felt her breast" She originally volunteered this information to the police thinking it would be helpful to Wise. The boys admit to beating her and sexually molesting her. We even know exactly which boys held her down. The only question is if any of the boys entered her while they were holding her down feeling her up. We know how many boys had their penises out and humping her... the question is did they go inside of her. Each boy tells on the others but no boy admits to entering her. They took turns but none of the boys admitted to watching the other to see if the penis entered... they just assumed since the boys were humping, that they were inside.
7. Reyes confessed to doing all of it alone after he got beat up by Korey Wise, who had become a blood prison gang leader. You can read the prison report regarding the fight.
Reyes had absolutely nothing to lose by confessing to the rape, the statute of limitations had run out already, he had much to gain by claiming he acted alone: He got a favorable prison transfer. He was already in prison for murder.
Police always knew a 6th boy had gotten away. Listen to the five boys testimony they mention Reyes walking up mid way thru the assault.
There's also a report from a former cellmate of Mattias Reyes before he was transferred. He said Reyes told him he showed up at the end and took Trisha to another location to rape her again
1/11/02 - Reyes filed a request for Separation from General Population stating he "Feared for his life" an investigation was launched by Officer Clark and was confirmed later in 11/12 by Captain Gummerson at Auburn Correctional Facility, who confirmed that Reyes was in danger if he remained in the general population alongside Korey Wise.
In the book "Your Eyes Your Life" by Richard Siracusa, he writes "The panel suggested that there investigation revealed evidence that Reyes came forward as a result of threats delivered through the underground prison communication system and/ or he acted in order to get a desired change in prison assignment"
8. When Raymond Santana was being driven to the precinct the night of the rape, he blurted out: "I had nothing to do with the rape. All I did was feel the woman's tits."
None of the boys knew if the female jogger survived the attack and some assumed she had died. Police didn't even know about the rape at that point so he volunteered that info. The other boys were only found because the first boy who got arrested gave all the names and where to find the other boys to the police... which is how we know who was involved.
The group of more than 30+ boys planned to go "wilding" two days prior. They intended to come to Central Park and beat up random people and possibly rob them.
They beat 7 people that night. One man they beat with a metal pipe and almost killed him. They fractured his skull.
9. Up until 2002 Raymond Santana was saying that he had done everything else except the rape, Yusef Salaam said the same thing. They changed their story after the publicity.

Sarah Burns the person behind the "When They See Us" Netflix Documentary also worked for the same law firm that was trying to get them a big $40 million settlement from NYC. Hence the one sidedness and ignoring facts /evidence from the film.
The Netflix show "When They See Us" is "biased" and "Completely Slanted" per the Creator and writer of the show Ava DuVernay. Which explains the blatant lies like when the officer hits Kevin Richardson in the face with an officers motorcycle helmet... when in reality no officer had a helmet or even a motorcycle. Nor did he have a black eye in real life like he did in the show... they created an insanely inaccurate portrayal to control the viewers perception of what actually happened. You can still look at the booking photo of Kevin Richardson so it's not like she didn't know this....

The boys' sentences were commuted, they were never declared innocent because they clearly aren't. They served their time for the assault but we don't need to lie about them being innocent as it's not helping anyone.

I can't even imagine the trauma these 5 brothers endured. I was a pre-teen in NYC at that time I remember clearly how big this story was. Watching When They See Us brought it all back for me. Jharell Jerome deserve all the awards for his portrayal of Korey Wise. It was a phenomenal performance.

@@shhh7188 had he just submitted to the lies and said he was guilty to the parole board, he would’ve never had that reunion with the actual rapist who felt guilty that Korey was serving time for the crime that he committed. The rapist then came forward and admitted he was the one who did it, which led to the exoneration of Korey and the other innocent men
@@shhh7188 basically Korey stayed alive even though his life was made hell. He chose to stay strong and keep going. The guy that actually committed the crime saw that Korey was still alive and then confessed it was him. Hence they were all freed... Even though the younger boys left prison they still had curfews and couldn't get jobs. When the actual murder come through they all were able to say they are not guilty. Hope that makes sense x
What Korey endured is so horrific. This man stayed in prison because he knew the truth. He was not going to admit to something he didnt do. With that strength he was able to set everyone free. He almost died many times, took the only road he knew. Not knowing it was the path to setting himself free and freeing everyone of these charges. Korey is a special man. He wasnt going to be broken by a corrupt system. He left as a soldier and came home a GENERAL!! Everyone involved from the police to the prosecutors to the correctional officers to the inmates need to be punished for life! Hats off and salute to Mr. Korey Wise u are the true meaning to a HERO!! I feel like if I didn’t know their story I wouldn’t even know nothing was wrong with these two, they’re soo strong. And I mean this in the most respectful way... Yusef and Raymond seem so poised and centered in their interviews. And I’m not saying the others don’t have the right to be flustered or triggered by their experiences but I think that Antron & Korey are in the hardest places you can still feel the pain and just hurt that they’ve gone through. And I’m not saying the others haven’t but I just don’t see that much coming from them. And my heart constantly breaks for Korey, like it really does ... and I just pray that God is with him day in and day out, leveling his mind, keeping him safe, just a shield of protection over him, in Jesus’s name!! It also says a lot about Korey for never sharing with them what he went through, especially Yusef. Korey is the truest testament of a good friend 💔💙💙💙

I was 12 years old living in NYC at the time this entire thing broke. I can remember my mother screaming at the news channels, screaming to hang them with a rope. My mother wouldn't let me go outside for nothing. I assumed they were guilty, even at 12.
As a 42 year old Puerto Rican man, I humbly apologize for being naive. There was no such thing as the internet back then. We only had the newspaper and the television.
The media is just as guilty in their demise. Each and every news outlet such as the dailynews and each news station should write a full page apology as Trump wrote a full page damning of these men.

Cause we is confused by that guard who said "let me know when you can do something for me" plus ava said she only showed 70% what he went through in jail. Unfortunately, there are so many stories like Korey Wise and the rest of these men. Imagine just how many innocent black and brown men and women who are in prison for something they didn’t do; going through hell, being assaulted by prison guards and inmates alike. I live near Auburn Correctional Facility where Korey Wise was held and this is one of the most if not the most dangerous correctional/prison in NY state for both the guards and inmates alike. To know this and to see him make it out alive is truly God’s testament to what he can show how he protects his own. The mental trauma unfortunately will more than likely last a lifetime; something they will have to live with, but I pray that they make it through. I wish everyone peace and blessings. 🙏🏾

There's no malice, Korey didn't get out and blame anyone, they survived horrendous attacks in prison that could have made any of their heart's malicious. These are MEN Their Warriors!!!!!!! It aint easy and thats for sure.I was with Ray for 4 years b4 we were transferred to Department of corrections. No one that knew him believed that he did this..He didnt give that vibe at all. We were all young and full of testosterone and when we would look at women and females because we are locked away from the world Ray would not look in a female's direction for no reason at all he would always turn his back as if that was dangerous to look.like women are why im here so stay clear..I'm sure that the experience all of them had was very traumatizing but I am in agreement with believing that Corey had it the worst because he was a child amongst men. I'm happy for all of them but I'm really happy for my boy Ray because me and him were always cool...i got excited for this victory

I refused to watch because I feel deep, but my husband talked me into it. It wasn't easy watching the first 3 episodes, but #4 was so Deep my emotions were all over the place all night and day for the next two days. The only positive take away was seeing the beautiful photo of Cory at the very end. It's so beautiful with the wing tattoo on his arm, his brown eyes, and muscular face represents Strength, Endurance Encouragement and The Love of God. Because there is no way he could have come through that and still be sane if it had not been for God carrying him through it all. And God sending that kind hearted co officer to befriend him and look after him. Thank you Father for bringing Cory through it all. 🙏🏽
❤Korey....I happened to be laying in bed crying worrying myself with my life problems when I ran into this story about you guys. It showed me exactly what I needed to see. There are people out here living in pure misery with absolutely nothing going their way! I immediately turned my pain into thankfulness for what I do have going for me. It could be so much worse.

I hardly made it through each episode, a lot of anger and sadness overwhelmed me and yes I agree Korey’s story haunts my dreams and I truly hope everyone involved get exactly what they deserve and twice over..
A few years ago I read an article written by Yusef. He said he still feels uncomfortable in public. I had sent him a message of well wishes etc.
He messaged me back a nice thank you and he appreciated my sentiment. It wasn’t much, but for him to reply and be honestly appreciative of the smallest kind gesture was sweet, yet so sad. How hard life must have been and so unjust that a simple message from a stranger is important enough to acknowledge. There are people, even now, who say they still deserved jail because they did other bad things. It’s like talking to a brick wall trying to get them to understand they are doing the exact same thing that had already been done to them. I will never know the prejudice that people with brown skin face.
All I can say is, I hear you. I’m home bound so can’t do anything except be an armchair warrior. My heart breaks with each senseless killing of innocent men and women, and the injustice of our court systems sentencing bias. I can’t imagine having to worry about being pulled over and questioned because of skin color and have fear you may get shot if you move wrong.

This was truly amazing to listen to. They both responded so well. I always wondered what they thought about Korey’s pain and how they would respond to all the attention Korey’s story is receiving (with reason). All 5 of these men are inspiring and should never be forgotten.
Just got done watching Oprah when they see us now. I enjoyed it. And korey damn near about to make me cry again. It just his warm and positive outlook he STILL have in life spike the things he been through.

I think his disabilities and not being able to effectively communicate what his heart, mind and intuition knew messed it all up. It's like you can tell he gets it all but when he tries to speak it out it gets a little lost in translation from his brain to his mouth. And if you have a impatient person or someone who does not deal well with the disabaled they can be dismissive. There was a love there between those two boys that she probably didn't understand at the time.
jill scottman I was thinking the same thing. Maybe his mom also knew how unpleasant Korey’s mom (being a cursing drug addict) was at that time and projected that on to him. And she seemed to be real tribal looking out for what was hers. She didn’t know how to help her son or anyone else’s.
In the doc she said it’s prohibited for incarcerated people to exchange letters. She was afraid of them being caught and getting him more years in jail. She wasn’t going to risk that after he already was in juvenile detention for a crime he didn’t commit. You have to put yourself in her shoes. She did the best for her son at the time.

They were robbed of 1990s EXPERIENCE as young men in their 20s.........
I was 17 years old in 1989, so im in these men age bracket, and im from newyork. And the 1990s experience in NYC as a young man in his 20s was a whole lot of fun.
And also just being in your 20s in general is fun period. Your 20s is the time you buy your first Car, constantly Travel, Go out on Dates with different Women until you find the right woman, meet different people that can possibly become your new best friend, If you're a party animal you can go out and hit the night club scene almost every weekend, You can make immature mistakes that can make you a better smarter person when you get older, and you can basically act like a young fool while enjoying your life, and when you get in your 30s , that's when you calm down, get More mature, get even more responsible about life, and even settle down. That's all the things the average man does in his 20s, and your 20s is the best times of your life to experience, and it definitely was for me, because I was in my 20s through the whole 90s decade in NYC and i had a blast with some of the best Memories of my life...............
That's why i pretty much know what the Central Park 5 missed, because they are in my age bracket, and they wouldve pretty much experienced the same type of fun EXPERIENCES that I had as young men in their 20s in the 1990s living in NYC.
But Unfortunately, the Justice System fucked them over, and they were in Prison through the whole 90s decade, which totally robbed them of possibly living some of the Best Times of their Young Adult lives in their 20s :(
This series made me cry hard, I can't even imagine what all of them had to go through

I watched kory's mom testimony about her son. She said he was mean and he didnt know how to love. She said she doesn't reconize her son anymore. It's horrible what was done to him. My heart hearts for kory. He's so strong! All of them are.
I saw that interview as well... but I disagree with his Mom... ONLY love not only made this man stick by a friend closer than a brother that cost him his childhood and innocence, yet still to this day, he still calls that same man his friend... ONLY love can do that...so I disagree with his mother, Korey is overflowing with love... even with his disabilities, he loves more than many I've seen with "no" disability. 🙏🏾
To have the media make u out as a monster to the the law and judicial system to railroad you and then to become a man at 16 in the belly of the beast and not to mention it was older dudes lying about there age to go to ARDC ADOLESCENCE'S detention center on RIKERS ISLAND and to experience prison that's a toll right there
