The part where the young child told their mother "that's Yusef Salaam" was so sweet 💯💯💯💯

Yusuf Salaam was lucky to have his mother as a protector and advocate. She knew he and they were innocent and would not let him sign a confession and answer their questions. She would be very proud of his accomplishments.
It's so impressive when people like him overcome injustice and find such a positive path.
The only injustice is that he's still alive.
@@jellybiscuitNo, this injustice is that you're alive.
I need to listen to this every day. Such encouragement and forgiveness . Thank you, Yusef.

Your mother sounds like an amazing woman, Dr. Salaam. Peace and glory to both of you and your family.🙏

So proud of this man.👏🏾✊🏾💯🙏🏾❤️
You shouldn’t be, he was bashing peoples heads in with a metal pipe and he is guilty of the rape too.
Put in a little effort and you’ll find all the lies. Figures like this are used as a tool to manipulate you.
He’s a complete scumbag
No words describe this man’s story, good man
I can think of one word: r@pist
This man is remarkable in every sense of the word.
It's remarkable to see someone lie as shamelessly as ol' Yusef does.
When you live your whole life being accused of things you have never done nor ever thought about doing is a burdensome path in itself but to allow forgiveness to take centre stage and turn your journey into one of power is truly inspiring loved this segment this is why I fell in love with watching the view for these types of interviews.
What an honarable & gracious man! Don't think I could be that forgiving. Yes I could but I would never forget.
When They See Us was so incredible!!!! I’ll never forget the tears I cried watching those episodes
That série wasnt talked about long enough! Thats when i gave my full respect to Ava as a director .The way she told the stories of those young boys with respect and dignity...i cried so much..the fact they are still alive after all those years in prison and not guilty💔 blouse my mind!

This is a lovely man… You are a beautiful soul…💜
I remember when this happened in NYC. I was young, living in Ohio, and watched the national coverage this case got. I remember thinking something was off with this investigation…how they “found” those who attacked the jogger so quickly. I remember thinking they settled this case with speed and ease…and I wondered how? I remember watching Katie Couric interview the attacked jogger in 2003. I felt terribly bad for her (the attack was horrific) and, at the same time, I felt worse for those wrongfully arrested for this attack. Then I read the book, The Central Park Five (Sarah Burns) and later watched the documentary by Sarah and her father Ken. I believe in a justice system that works for ALL of us, but this case opened my naive eyes to the reality that is out there for black and brown people and how the criminal justice system uses tactics of manipulation against marginalized groups.
Dr. Yusef Salaam is an American hero, success story and an amazing example of resilience. I am so glad he is a NYC council member and I wish him blessings in his 50th year…and the many years ahead of him!
Couldn’t finish the when they see us series…and haven’t gone back to watch. It was ALOT 😢

His character is defined by goin' out wildin' in Central Park with his criminal homies.

How many others are at the hands of evil men... it's sick and sad what they went through and it sucks that we as black people have to always take the high road and endure just to get some praise. His grace and etiquette to this situation is amazing but honestly, it should have NEVER happened in the first place.
I'm so sorry

All facts! We are always expected to take the high road! Even when we’ve been wrong! But it just shows us as better people in my eyes!

Wow, what a full circle moment. I remember watching this in real time. I was 19 years old when it happened. I will never forget that moment. I knew when they were first arrested watching the trial, they were innocent and were being railroaded by crooked cops this unbalanced judicial system in America. Sometimes we never know what God is taking us through to get to a place where we are meant to be, yet what those young boys now men suffered was beyond cruel and should be the main face of injustice in this country.
Me too
Hypocritically, everything that *Chester Cheato* accused those innocent Black teens of doing, he actually did himself! #LHU
And if more people read they would have a greater, informed view of our politicians.

White rage is right there beneath the surface. The main fuel that nurtures the MAGA movement is hate for racial equality
Choosing to change the legacy of darkness inherited from our parents is a nobler path than perpetuating their misdeeds globally. The present generation of American leaders possesses the capacity to reform the unjust two-tier justice system, particularly detrimental to black and brown individuals, notably black men.
The injustice bestowed upon these young men that I recalled the full story, thinking how it could have been me, my brother, any Black girl or young man. I still cannot bring myself to watch the movie,it pains my heart to watch the blatant injustice from the police ,to the lawyers , to the entire people of the system. The heartless treatment and false Accusations and wrongful questioning of minors. They broke every law and should be prosecuted. $41M doesn't pay for the life lost, at 14 years old because of racist discriminatory practices, and beliefs of another being. I can't watch the movie , the first 30 minutes Disgraceful!😠😡💔

It should not stop here.
Why the investigators and prosecutors who are still alive not being prosecuted for serving gross injustice? They must serve time!

Let's not be forget Trump's role in this
Showing his racist views for all to be see

What about KORY??!
Many people of color have been violated of the constitutional rights they have been judged regarding the color of their skin being black and brown police officers are able to use excessive deadly force violating because we are colored people. It is very upsetting when police officers break the law, they must be held accountable when they have been unfair and putting black and brown people in the system and how I would love ones to lose their freedom when they have not committed a crime is unfair. When people have a trial and discovery is not handed over and black and brown people go to jail and do stay time they make an example on our children, but we will continue to fight for justice and accountability, making sure the whole police officers accountable when they break the law and making sure there’s transparency and making sure we want with the system is doing and making sure we keep an eye open and making sure we get fair treatment because when you lose your freedom, you lost everything and not only hurts the victim. It is the whole entire family, and so no one should be above the law does every life matters and is just an accountability and transparency
love him but i really wish he had answered the last question because he did not

I'd love to see him get in touch with Johnny Hincapie, a white man who also spent decades in prison despite even the ones they caught truly guilty of the crime saying HE was NOT involved and yet still got swept up because their approach was to roll up the whole "wolf pack" of kids committing crimes. Hincapie was a literal altar boy never in trouble they got to "confess" (kind of, having fed him details supposed to make him a "witness," along the lines of how he knew his friends were guilty and even though he was on the stairs nowhere near them and didn't have any foreknowledge or idea what happened until a day or two later, when it was all over the news and neighborhood. That killing on the subway platform when a group of teens and Hincapie were going out to a club but a lot of them needed the $. He didn't, but his jeans (being in the 80s) were too tight to hold his wallet so had given it to a friend with cargo pants. Hincapie and another guy went ahead and weren't nearby when the horrible robbery gone wrong went down, and it shows why Hincapie wasn't suspicious. They were guys he knew from around the neighborhood and a couple counted as friends he thought he could trust, including the guy holding his wallet who didn't steal from Hincapie when he had the chance, so why would he think the guy was capable of robbery to steal from somebody else that would turn into murder? But that's what happened as their standard hold up of the clean-cut kid from Utah went wrong. Then a few days later, the altar boy is getting braced by police beating on him in a back room that he's a murdering thief or a witness, and he made the mistake of agreeing to lie as a witness using details fed to him by the cop--that they turned into a confession! Crime WAS out of control, but so were the methods the DA and police used to get as many of those in "packs" as they could, leading to A LOT of wrongful convictions! What was racist and what was just their methods? If Hincapie and he teamed up, maybe they could figure out how to get the wrongly convicted out of jail!!!
Family should reach out to The Innocence Project.
"Wrongly accused, convicted and now exonerated"? No. This is a narrative rooted in healthy doses of ignorance and emotion. "When They See Us" perpetuated both. With extraordinary success.
