Few years back you took a Hybrid Rav4 up some pretty steep hills and it killed it! So, unless that has changed, I say stick to the advice of buying a Hybrid Rav4 to get that low end torque since they don't have a proper 4L. Bottom line tho, is the TRD Rav4 is just an appearance package. It does not have the DNA like its bigger relatives.

I know this rav4 is more compact than subcompact, but I just got a compass upland and I am very happy with it's off-road performance given the size and price. They actually give it decent clearance, and more important for me where I live in cross-ditch central, good approach, skid plates, and decent departure+breakover as well. Those are what I run into before power and traction limits, typically, and it's the only vehicle in the class to give two hoots about angles.

Great review. Very consistent with DrivingSportsTV review. I hope Toyota turns this feedback positive and makes the next version with better gearing, and more wheel cavity for larger tires. Honda did it right with their gearing choice. I bet a Honda Passport will rip through all the same courses this thing hit. A unibody can fair very well with the right gearing and (virtual) locking differentials -- just look at the Defender and Passport. Hope they offer rock sliders, like the Tundra TRD Pro, or at least, mounting points that can handle aftermarket rock sliders.
Also this wheelbase isn't so long, only about 106", about the same as the FJ Cruiser. 4Runner is about 109.8". 4-door Wrangler is about 118"

Let's face it... most people buying a Rav4 won't be off-roading seriously hard. But I have to say, I think it did really great for what it was. Needs more back wheel torque action. Honda is better at that. Also, brake traction control is not as good as locking clutches in the rear like Honda or Ford Bronco Sport. I'd like you to test a Honda Passport over the same conditions as I think Honda I-VTM4 is a little more superior to Toyota's. Would be a great study! Thanks for the great vid Tommy!

I drive around a 240D all day and while, sure I'm at sea level, I feel like the engine or computer was holding the RAV4 back for some reason. I can crawl up any hill here in San Francisco if only in 1st gear (and the hills here are pretty steep sometimes). I wonder if it's just an issue of rev limiting at low speed combined with poor front traction on steep slopes, especially those loose dirt or low-traction logs. Not sure why they tuned the car that way. You'd think they'd let you give it some real beans when you're trying to get unstuck.

Call the Mini Mountain the 'MAJOR MOLEHILL' MM

3:29 Mini Mountain… my suggestion is ‘Knoll’.

with an 8 speed im sure they could have a much lower 1st gear and split the difference between the other 7 without sacrificing much on road performance/economy. although regearing the entire transmission would be extremely expensive

My question is are people using the "manual" shift option and try it in 2nd gear?

  • @patrickempty

You need a front wheel drive 80s Cutlass Cruiser Wagon with wood grain for that ;)

  • @djw1091994

This power train with the mild hybrid setup from the tundra would fix it's torque problem and bump MPG. Would be more expensive though...

I'd say that was a fail for offroading. The last bit of logs you had to go up on an angle. Will the CX-5 conquer the course?

I wonder what drive mode you used on those parts trying to go up the steep hill. Switching to manual mode and Sports would make it far easier for the vehicle to climb...

I have a 21 hybrid XSE that I've taken on the beach several times with no issues. Having said that, "soft roading" is the most the Ravioli can do. They are designed for practicality and economy. Toyota has no business throwing a TRD badge on this model.

Most crossovers overheat their transmissions or AWD systems on obstacles like this, but the RAV4 didn’t overheat anything even on a hot day!

  • @hermanjohnson9180
    @hermanjohnson9180 Před rokem +2

AWD especially doesn't work without traction control. Only full-time 4WD works without traction control. Yes, I know permanent(F.T) 4WD seems very similar to AWD but it isn't mechanically speaking, and it shows in performance.
Full time 4WD is not engineered for high speed cornering on road. And AWD is not engineered for off road.
Always pay attention to the drive train badge ppl ! The off road trim Rav 4 did pretty good.

People just dont buy a Rav4 to run it off road. Its built for the road. Bought my daughter one which is a hybrid it gets 40 mpg and is great on the road. still glad to see this report.
