God bless this man we knew as John Wayne. I’m 76 and also dying of terminal cancer so I can in some way relate to his final time here on earth. I love this man because he gave so much of himself to us for our pleasure. He loved this country and what it stands for. He spoke up to defend her publicly, and in his movies. My western home is a tribute to him. It’s hard to pick one of his films. There were so many that I love but I am partial to Hondo, and his final film The Shootist.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Excellent yet brief examination of John Wayne in the last few years of his life. I've been a John Wayne fan since childhood; I'm seventy-five as I write this in December 2023. John Wayne was certainly not perfect, but I believe he was a vastly better man than far too many reviewers in this day and age claim. Humanity needs more people like John Wayne. Thank you for making this video tribute to John "Duke" Wayne! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.

Now that I'm 77, five years older than John Wayne was when he died, I realize how many more years America
could have enjoyed Wayne's performances, had he not gotten cancer! Today, we are seeing actors performing well
into their 80's & even 90's, when Wayne was only 69 in his last role! He was a 'victim' of a habit that caused untold
misery & death .i.e. excessive smoking! Wayne, like many others, may have shortened their lives by decades! R.I.P. John!

I think that I can quote pretty much every line in every movie that he ever did. I raised my kids on what we called "John Wayne's Wisdom". I can't name a favorite movie because I loved them all. However, I have always had a hard time watching "The Cowboys" and "The Shootist" because other than "The Alamo", they were the only movies that showed him dying in them. It saddens my heart to think of him dying and then actually acting out that scene. The whole situation was just gut wrenching for me. I remember Duke! I worked for his best friend Chick and saw Duke the last couple years before he died! It was terrible to see Duke go through cancer😢 I always remembered him big and strong and seeing him weak was so heart wrenching! Chick was in charge of Dukes will and estate and Duke is even buried in Chicks private family plot next to Chicks son who died in a car accident. My father could have been Dukes twin in his personality and made me love being around Duke that much more! They say a lot of good things about Duke and they are true! They even say some bad things about Duke but most were either jealous or had a ax to grind with him so they bad mouthed him! He made westerns that gave us hero’s we needed and war movies that made him feel better that he couldn’t serve in the military because of a old college injury but influenced a lot of young lads to join and what he loved most besides his family was his country and what it stood for at that time!

I'm sixty and I remember many of his movies, I bought derringers because the Duke always had one in his pocket in his westerns, used Winchester rifles which were famous, and his famous saying that I use to get my crew to work, "we're burning daylight ", from his movie the cowboys,

JW and Jimmy Stewart in the Shootist discuss death, "even an ox dies". When I saw that film when first released it so painfully obvious he was dying in 1979. There was a dignity, grace and peace with his acting style in that film which transcends an otherwise ordinary, not so special, not so much a JW style of film. Certainly not in the same class as The Searchers or Liberty Valance. What I took away from that film is that like it or not all of us are going to die, someday, somewhere & somehow. The longer we last the harder it will be to reflect on a young body trapped in an aged package but that's life. We all can't jump a fence like he did at the end of True Grit like he did but we can all jump out own fences aging in our own ways. JW taught a lot more to people in his films than I think he ever realized himself. Few actors have ever come close to a JW.

I see comments saying if John Wayne hadn't smoked so much, he would have lived longer. BULL BUTTER!!
I'm not saying smoking is good for you, but remember, before the early 90s, smoking was the normal thing. Especially the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I'm 78, and I remember you could smoke anywhere. Restaurants, grocery and department stores, airplanes, hell, even hospitals! I know because in my 30s, I smoked and was in the hospital, and the nurse brought me an ashtray!
And you all forget one thing. The average life span of the average male in the United States is 74 for males and 79 for females.
We all have to die of something. And the Duke died with respect and doing all his life what he loved, and I don't believe he would have changed a thing.
    Thanks for sharing this video.

If you think he wore a wetsuit under that tux, then you never wore a wet suit. I went SCUBA in 35 degree weather and sweated like a pig in that thing. Under those stage lights? No way

Death is part of our circle of life. It's ok to depart this world and we don't have to be afraid. My father had terminal cancer and it's never pretty or easy to watch the people you love suffer.

My favorite John Wayne story is regarding his purchase of a 1953 Corvette that he was physically too big for. It was reported that his entire head sat above the low slung windshield of the fiberglass flyer, and that the few times he was seen driving it, he was wearing pilot's goggles.
