      Haha the only saving grace of this janky rushed mess of a game, made by the B team, the dlc have a few good bits..
      I feel bad for the devs, but forcing a bunch of the B team guys to rush this out ASAP after the success of 1 without Miyazakis involvement, none of the polish, skill or real grasp of what made 1 great..it reeeally shows with the horrible hitboxes, poor boss design, clunky movement, really wonky level design..
      When it was all we had it was acceptable, but even soulslikes like Nioh are LEAGUES better than this one, and then after BB, 3 and sek this definitely became the janky knockoff of the bunch

    05:30 The player character looking disappointed in himself in the default ending actually kinda fits with the Aldia lore: DS2's ending does not show you whether you chose to link the fire again or usher in an age of dark, it just means that the cycle of fire and dark continues. Aldia tried to break the cycle, and the alternate ending implies that you follow in his path.

      Ehhh I mean, none of the lore in 2 is even remotely tied to the rest of the series, Miyazaki wasn't even involved haha. It was thrown together in a rush to capitalize on the success, and lacks so much of the gameplay polish and charm
      I mean the hitboxes alone, the level design, blegh.
      It's still better than your average game, sure, but it's more of a Lord's of fallen/surge level game than a dark souls.

    Those cut areas are really neat. Really makes it feel like the world is bigger than what you see. That blocked-off tunnel with perfectly intact exit hole in particular makes it feel like a real world with a full history, and not just the plot or lore relevant bits. Like there really was just a tunnel there, and the entrance really did just collapse, and that's all there is to it. Even if it was just a scrapped idea that the devs just didn't bother erasing entirely, it still feels organic.

    With how many changes that get made in NG+ in DS2 that sadly the other games in the series never tried again, I was wondering how Freja just pops up from under the cliffside before properly fighting her or the 2 red phantoms that jailbreak during the lost sinner's fight if they are always there even before entering the arena

    • @naherathe
      @naherathe Před 6 měsíci +5

      Ds2 tried so much more to break the mold and do new things. It didn't always pan out but I sorely wish the series had kept that mindset going forward. I love ds3 but it definitely plays it too safe for my taste. It's sad that ds2 got so much hate for problems that, for the most part, all souls games are guilty of to some respect.

    Can you look at the building in Brightstone Cove Tseldora that can't be reached, and also the upper ground in the Forest of Fallen Giant's Soldier's Rest area that looks like the blocked off cave tunnel would have led to it? It's right next to the building with 3 Turtle Knights on the roof. That place is driving me crazy, I feel like I could bait one of the Turtle Knights into smacking me up onto the ridge but it's just too difficult to bait out that attack

    For The Iron Keep being "above" Earthen Peak,
    The best interpretation that I read is that in Dark Souls II, a major theme is the warping of time, space, and our character's memories as we slowly hollow.
    And it's not just these two areas. If you compare the landmarks of ANY open area, the geographical space doesn't make sense. Like, for example, Heide's Tower is WAAAAY farther from Majula than it seems just from the walk alone. The Forest of Fallen Giant's, Dranleic Castle, Lost Bastille. How far these areas are do not line up with how quickly we walk there on foot. And one of the ways this is, is that our character doesn't remember the entire journey. They just walk, going in what they think is the right direction, but losing parts of the journey along the way. Including traveling from the top of Earthen Peak on a mountain to the bottom of Iron Keep beneath a volcano.
    So for Earthen Peak, the implication is that our character actually does travel "correctly", but we just don't remember it.
    And that's honestly horrifying.

    • @YEY0806
      @YEY0806 Před 5 měsíci

      It's a good theory, however there is a more obvious but also boring answer that isn't just only "devs didn't have time", in a lot of open world games as well as sup open world games like the souls series, locations that in lore are meant to be further away or larger are downsized for the sake of gameplay because it wouldn't be fun having to traverse massive distances to get to the next area.

    5:50 based on that position, that pathway outline looks like "floor data" for the area below.
    if you were able to look again, it should line up with the entrance to The Gutter, as the Grave of Saints
    area drops you from above the rope bridge in the area. the floor just below that has this general shape.
    its possible it is an unused version of that data and you just didnt show it or had time to show it.

      I thought the same thing initially. I think it might actually be the layout for the water because of how thin it is and the fact that it has that indent that lines up perfectly with the water meeting the land. Looking at how far it goes, it’s possible it was the original intent was to have a small waterfall leading into The Gutter, which makes sense considering there’s a sort of drainage system behind the metal chest the Syan knight is guarding at the opposite end of the area.

  • @ShuckleIX

    -The zoom outs can be very interesting, especially for games like Dark Souls because of all the detail the devs put into the worldbuilding. In interesting (highly stylized) areas, they often have things I would never have noticed because most of the times in gameplay (especially in difficult gameplay) I just play the game and enjoy the atmosphere I get, I'm not looking around like "Is there a giant eldritch eye peering into this chimney? No? Okay", but with zoomouts you find the eye, like here 13:19.
    -Also, I think "zoomouts" is just half of this video series, definitionally.
    -I think a lot of this video series is about appreciating graphic design, and here is an example for me 16:15, I didn't know that area had fully modeled surroundings, that's so cool. One of the coolest graphical techniques for me is those flat textures that have depth, they're literally just normal textures but they use computer magic to add depth to individual pixels of the texture. And for me, they look a little glitchy often, but they fix computer graphics so much. I feel like the biggest flaw for graphics is texture, touch texture, that a towel doesn't have individual fibers, that a tree doesn't have little vertical depressions. The technique adds so much needed detail, and, honestly, it's just models but in texture form. It's the models that are cool. That's why the environments outside the play area can be so interesting to me and I'm sure a lot of people.
    -On some level, every player appreciates new areas, that's why people buy DLC even if it just adds another map, F-Zero 99 is the most recent example, a lot of the playerbase wanted more maps, even though they look quite similar, even though they're more or less the same thing. And Dark souls is the perfect example, because most players in the community appreciate how you can see other areas in the distance, it gives a sense of worldbuilding and exploration, and the zoomouts are no exception.
    -Last point, I think some people said they're a bit boring, probably people that don't care about graphics or that need as much screen information per second as possible. Honestly, if they're boring, just leave them as the final segment of the video, then people with short attention spans can click out of the video without missing anything else. A common comment I have on media is, if it's supposed to be good, it might as well be the best version it can be. If the zoomouts are interesting, not including them would just be a waste, a lost opportunity for humanity. Think of what would've happened if Kojima had rushed his games and left them incomplete just to get more money, what a tragedy that would've been, the industry would've been so much worse (and it's already garbage for the most part), his team was the perfect example and appeared very early. People always act better with a good example to guide them, they just end up healthier and happier.

    DS2 is such a fun little experiment that FromSoft went on. So many little oddball details and gimmicks present in the game.

    5:52 - That strongly resembles the area you drop into under the broken bridge in the Grave of Saints. The central part is where you land, and the two paths are the tunnels either side.

    So this could just be a coincidence, but I think the geometry that is present during the Royal Ray Vanguard area is probably just the water area below. It matches up basically perfectly to that. You also get to this area from a drop down right after this fight so it would make sense there potentially some of it loaded beforehand. You can see the pathway that leads to the chest and then cuts off, and then the pathway that leads to the gutter in the other direction.

    Dark Souls 2 is my personal favorite of the series, so this vid was very interesting! If you ever so a part 2, the battle sequence in the Memory of Jeigh where that statue head gets knocked off would be cool to see at a distance to see where it comes from.

    4:53 it's pronounced NaSHandra not NaSandra.
    6:31 that actually makes sense, since the Mirror Knight boss uses the same shield to summon enemies into the bossfight.
