      Honestly it doesn't hurt at all. At first. I've got burned my finger while welding damascus today. But after a few hours (1:20 am here now when posting this comment, I've burned myself like 10 hrs ago) it really becomes painful stuff... But well. That's what a blacksmith do. Work, forge and got burned. ;-) Still best job in the world.

    tip for forgewelding the jelly-roll. Make a set of 90° dyes for the press or power hammer, turn them 90° and use them to square up the roll, it would be best to get a good piece of square tube that's large enough in diameter for what you want to do and cut it in half along two opposing corners.

    • @chrisedwards3866
      @chrisedwards3866 Před 6 lety

      This is a guess, but I think the problem is actually that you're hammering it straight downwards. To roll it, you want to hit it as though you're rolling it a little. So, make a big incline slab (10 or 20 degrees would be fine), and hammer the roll while it is on that slab - just make sure that the roll is orientated so that it looks like it will tighten if it rolls down the slant.
      It's probably not a good idea to hammer something while it's on an angle like that, and you'd need to do something to hold that extra base piece in place. But, that will cause the roll to tighten with each hammer blow.

    Alec, if you search for jelly roll Damascus their is a video from a mastersmith that used a hydraulic press to forge weld the roll. That is probably the easiest way to forge it, but you ATTACKED the problem and made a stunning piece of art with that billet!
    Amazing job! EPICNESS!!!!
    If I can remember the video, after he had the roll forged he still used the press and used the square adapter in the press. Then he was able to draw out the square billet and talked about doing mosaic Damascus or just drawing it out

    Hey Alec Steele... I been watching your, and other, videos and learn and I really want to get into Blacksmithing myself. I think about it a lot and before I even finished watching I saw the issues you were having and came up w/a possible fix for it.
    Depending on the desired final size of Jelly Roll Damascus you want (i.e. 4" square) make a "Squaring Die" by cutting 4 pieces of 2"x2" angle iron about 3-4" long and weld them to a plate side-by-side w/the corners up, and repeat w/the other 2 pieces of angle iron. Then modify those 2 plates where they will attach to your power hammer or Hydraulic press where the angled corners meet up "point-to-point" and parallel to each other. The final resulting "squaring dies" will look like a Capital "W" sitting on top of a "M". (However, if you want your final size to be 3" square, use 1-1/2" angle iron, etc, etc...)
    Then, rather than forge-welding like you did w/flat dies this will force the steel to weld by pressing on it from four directions at once.
    One other Idea is to make a "Rounding Die" where the 1" angle iron pieces are spread out enough to set and weld a thick walled piece of iron pipe in-between them that has been cut in-half lengthwise. Say you wanna keep the Jelly Roll Damascus round at about 3" in diameter. (pardon me if my math would be off, but I'm brainstorming here and I hope you get the idea) Use a section of say 3-1/4" INSIDE DIAMETER pipe split down the middle with a 1/4" wide cut. When the 2 halves are put back together and measured, instead of it being 3-1/4" ROUND, it would be kinda oval in shape 3" up n down & 3-1/4" side-to-side. These 2 halves, mounted as above, would take a rolled-up piece of steel aprox. 3-3/8" - 3-1/2" in diameter and crush-n-weld it, AS YOU STRIKE IT AND TURN IT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ROLL AND STRIKE IT AGAIN, and again. This will help it weld together and NOT come undone at the end while leaving it planished @ about 3" in diameter.
    You can make another "Rounding Die" smaller or larger depending on what your desired size is, and you can start w/a large one and step it down smaller if you want. You can also use the Rounding Die to get it all welded up nice n pretty n symmetrical, then a suitable-sized "Squaring Die" to get it squared for further shaping w/out de-laminating.
    Let me know what you think and if you make a large enough chunk of Jelly Roll, round or square, make a Rounding Hammer out of it!! I'd Buy That !! Cheers! Alec

    I loved your video on "Jelly-roll Damascus". I was wondering why you didn't run a bead across the end of the strap, so that it wouldn't unroll on you, so it WOULD forge weld. Also, you asked for ideas...most people would say a blade of some sort, but what about a "dream-catcher" type dish that is flattened out and a rim drawn up and out...like a fancy saucer or cookie dish. That way you could lean it to show the beautiful Damascus style art you've created. Thanks again for your time and equipment and the will to make these wonderful videos!

    from what ive seen with JR Damascus, they have always tapered it at the front before rolling it up, and at the end using some angle presses to get it to forge weld. I say this because you managed it even without that. Kudos man.

    Nice work, once again, Alec. Congrats!
    One shows skill and adaptability when things go wrong, not when all is easy and goes as planned. So well done.
    I only tried jelly roll once, but knowing I would grind it later, I kind of cheated and tig welded across the spiral before final heat, and made the first welding pass by hand.
    And I always go for flux (althoug I make and use a dry version, using Jim Hrisoulas method).
    It lowers welding temp a lot and makes cleaner weldings.

    A nooby question for a blacksmith, but I haven't tried forgewelding yet... Does flux reduce the temperature needed to forgeweld steel or it just makes it easier for the pieces to connect? Cool damascus btw :p

    • @n00bje
      @n00bje Před 7 lety +3

      Jan Pielesiak If I'm not mistaken, it's to keep the iron from oxidizing.

    • @rionmotley2514
      @rionmotley2514 Před 7 lety +7

      It's just a detergent. Sulfur can lower the melting point of steel, but that's a bad thing, borax/boric acid just melts and dissolves the oxides on the surface, and doesn't stick tenaciously to the steel, so when you hammer/scrape/etc, the crud gets carried away in solution with the borax.
      Good question!

      Jan Pielesiak it provides a barrier and protects against oxidation.

    • @sixtoramos6323
      @sixtoramos6323 Před 7 lety +6

      Both. It removes oxides and seals the surfaces so no new oxides form, making a better connection due to cleaner surfaces. And thus, reduces the welding temp by about 100ºC...

    Could you blow nitrogen across while forging to limit scale production? Not for every project, but say if you wanted to do something like this where you'd expect a bit of extra trouble.

    • @NextMerckx
      @NextMerckx Před 6 lety +2

      Casey Wagner Nitrogen is pretty reactive in its own right, so he'd probably end up with a bunch of iron nitrides, which aren't real fantastic for one's health as they decompose.

    Just discovered Alec a little while ago and have been watching a lot of the old vids. When he got burned it reminded me a lot of last summer when I was working in a chem lab bending small-ish pieces of glass for an upcoming experiment, and dropped a piece, not taking the time to think "hmmn, maybe trying to catch red hot glass with my bare fingers (which I did, like a dumbass) would be a bad time."

    Alec, just a thought: maybe take a wipe you wouldn't mind forging into the roll and weld it to the inside of the drawn out steel so once all of the layers are rolled up you have this nice pipe sticking out the center of it. should help you during the welding process so you can get a nice even weld since you'll be rolling it and it ensures the steel doesn't fly about...

    For the circular welding, you need different dies on your power hammer. Get some that have a 90 degree slot in them. When the two come together, they should form a square hole. It isn't a perfect grip, but it will allow you to apply pressure to 4 points of the thing instead of two, and keep everything together
