Alec Steele Blacksmith 2017
Norwich, UK - Zábava
Mad to see how far he has came like experience and equipment and all that
Yeah
Come
How do you not have 10 million subs yet? Video quality, content, presentation is on an incredibly professional level. Prodigy, really.
+Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin keep sharing the videos and we might get there someday ;)
Dear Vladimir, I couldnt agree more. Alec, without question you will be at 1m sooner than you think. You are a force of nature!
He's right though. Everything about your videos, including the actual blacksmithing, screams "professional". Great, great stuff, Alec.
Sometimes less is more.
Overproduced.
i've been saying that forever.
"oops i just grabbed some 2000 degree steel with my bare hand, some duct tape'll fix that right up. also i'll make no mention of it in the video"
Mr. Rapenstein E L E C T R I C A L
T A P E
ah, my mistake
Mr. Rapenstein It's actually not, I referred to his overuse of electrical tape in the katana videos as a joke, lol.
oh, ok i should've known that was about the katana
all good buddy.
Alec do a new jelly role video see how it comes out as you have more experience now
That must have hurt....
Personally I do not want to think about how painful it was to have a ball of 2000°F / 1093°C (estimated) hot metal in your hand. Well it might not hurt at first but but after a while...
DaoudvanRaaij
Honestly it doesn't hurt at all. At first. I've got burned my finger while welding damascus today. But after a few hours (1:20 am here now when posting this comment, I've burned myself like 10 hrs ago) it really becomes painful stuff... But well. That's what a blacksmith do. Work, forge and got burned. ;-) Still best job in the world.
DaoudvanRaaij
I was working with some brass a little while back and had some 2000° slag pop off and land in my glove...I never felt it. About as big around as a dime and as deep as a few nickels...can't recommend it. hurt like hell while healing, but initially, the seared nerves were a blessing
DaoudvanRaaij I have scars on my left forearm from the heads of railroad spikes while making shelving brackets which in one particular position if you hit it slips and hits you directly in the arm but damn I did get paid for making 100 of those for a person who flips houses they paid $10 per shelving bracket
I had a smaller chunk of steel i was forge welding like this but instead hit the side of my nose near my eye , luckily it didn't hit my eye
Bro, you caught that hot potato like a champ! Made my stomach drop! Glad you still have skin on your hands! 👊🏻
Zac Stephens hot potato lol
😆😆
pretty cool
@LG 96 wholesome
tip for forgewelding the jelly-roll. Make a set of 90° dyes for the press or power hammer, turn them 90° and use them to square up the roll, it would be best to get a good piece of square tube that's large enough in diameter for what you want to do and cut it in half along two opposing corners.
JeeperZJ I've seen that on other blacksmithing video's and seems to work really well. amazing that Alec got the roll to weld.
V-dies are the way to go, for sure, and it works even better with a hydraulic press
I genuinely love all the work you put in to making these videos. Thanks Alec
+chaysebrown Thanks brother!
4:57 hand seems fine.
4:58 hand's all bunked up. Was that from when your steel jumped out at you? I held my breath when I saw that. The first thing i ever forged bounced up and hit me in the chin.
Sorry this comment was made 3 years ago but oof
I got my d ick stuck in a toaster once.
4:35
This dude is so happy and positive even after burning his hand. He continued with the project and still had an enthusiastic smile on his face at the end.
He is a legend.
Don't get me wrong I like you and your videos but you remind me of the kid from stuart little
Isabelle Cardon I knew I've seen him before
The kid from meet the robinsons
Isabelle Cardon No. He's from the Little Vampire
OMG thats exactly what I was thinking!

Jelly Roll? Looks more like Cinnamon Bun damascus!
Donylyn Knives hahaaaa cinnabun lol
He's hoping that his cinnamon roll has no raisins in it :)
eminusipi dude, high five. That was good.
Donylyn Knives that's what I thought
jukebox symposium not to be a little Debby downer but i don't think that would make a very interesting pattern.
Maybe gloves next time? Still, duct tape? Hells yeah. That's how a man does it!
Yetiman82 I imagine how painfull must be that burnt
I mean, damn, how hot was that piece of steel?!
About 1000°C +- 10%?
probably surprisingly less painful than you'd think. those nerves are toast, no pun intended.
If I had a dollar for every cut in the shop that had been patched up with electrical or duct tape, I'd have enough to go to the hospital and get professionally patched up...
No bitch mittens for this bloke!
I've had a lot of trouble forge welding recently, seeing you struggle is a nice pick-me-up. On your next damascus experiment how about a before and after wiegh in. Great videos the for the many insperations. :)
oh new idea start forge welding right when the roll begins, instead of rolling then welding.
Hmm idea beyond that, roll then tack with the welder. Man that seams like cheating tho xD
This is a guess, but I think the problem is actually that you're hammering it straight downwards. To roll it, you want to hit it as though you're rolling it a little. So, make a big incline slab (10 or 20 degrees would be fine), and hammer the roll while it is on that slab - just make sure that the roll is orientated so that it looks like it will tighten if it rolls down the slant.
It's probably not a good idea to hammer something while it's on an angle like that, and you'd need to do something to hold that extra base piece in place. But, that will cause the roll to tighten with each hammer blow.
You could make a large plate, for holding large jellyrolls. :)
a set of Damascus throwing Stars would be fantastic use of this jelly roll stock!
Im new to the blacksmithing world (even though I'm 30) but his videos popped up on my feed about a month ago and I can't get enough. He has inspired me to start trying to shape metal.
This is why it's nice having a short temper, you've already smashed everything in the shop long before you get a chance to catch a molten metal slug in your lap.
Alec, i like the way you work! When i cutt or burn myself in my workshop, i always use ductape or an old rag, or a combination of both to go on with my project. I guess we're just to lazy to get a band-aid😂😂
Who's back here in 2020?
Wow Alec has come so far!! 😃
Always a pleasure to see the technique in the craft.
to Alec Steele:
Your I'm from Italy and I can say that your mastering in blacksmithing is a fully thumb up!!
I love all the work you do.. especially the Damascus! thanks Alec
You should totally make a axe with it. The spiral metal will go in par with the rings on a tree.
Alec, if you search for jelly roll Damascus their is a video from a mastersmith that used a hydraulic press to forge weld the roll. That is probably the easiest way to forge it, but you ATTACKED the problem and made a stunning piece of art with that billet!
Amazing job! EPICNESS!!!!
If I can remember the video, after he had the roll forged he still used the press and used the square adapter in the press. Then he was able to draw out the square billet and talked about doing mosaic Damascus or just drawing it out
i hope your arm is okay Alec!!! and the jellyroll looks amazing your fantastic

“Steel fights Steele”
that thing would make an awesome belt buckle!
Knife
It’s actually very refreshing and inspiring to see how far you’ve gone and succeeded in under 2 years!! Well done mate. Keep the great vids coming.
That burn dude.... and you just get right back into it! You remind me of... well... me! Rock on you noble blacksmith
Damn I bet that hot steel hurt.
No shit
+Corey Birth Absolutely no shit.
mighty white ~ I got to say I agree with you, but what's even better is the fact that he didn't whine about it didn't show any extra clips, no whining no saying ow ow ow, no spiel about proper safety procedures and what can happen when you don't use them.
Instead you just see it and wrapped up in duct tape and then in the next video he's still wearing the duct tape nothing said about it no whining and no crying just moved on acted like nothing happened. Now that I think was amazing for a CZcams guy
+Jablonicus DeMarco Absolutely, its because hes a man not a little liberal fuck hole. XD People of normal intelligence should be able to see that clip for what it is and think to themselves in a split seconds time "hey that looked painful. I better remember not to do that if I try this at home." And anybody not intelligent enough to observe and learn from it probably shouldnt be here anyway. Too many idiots on this planet as it is.
mighty white "he's a man" he is a Fucking Legend he just duck taped his burn. beast.
Yes there are people watching still in 2019
I’m watching this is 2020
I found this channel earlier this year and it’s a delight seeing the old space and beginnings.
1:40 - "look at this badass forging steel in short sleeves with that overdriven guitar playing, hell of a lot of aesthetic right there, hope he doesn't burn his arms"
4:35 - *"who could have predicted that"*
well, deadly throwing stars, of course.
That looks sweet. Hope your hand/arm isn't too burned.
Man takes a hit from red hot steel on his bare arm and doesn't even use it as clickbait. Respect.
That jelly roll design looks great when its be a blade.
4:34 at this moment he knew. He fucked up
a laddle, bowl or spoon would show the pattern best if you can stretch it out
you could also make a hamburger flipper. its almost BBQ season
Holy shit I also thought he should make a spoon :D 2 ppl having the same strange idea.
DevilisInside I thought the same thing. Could be a psychodelic spoon with the pattern lol
Why make a spoon when he could make a spork
Very well shot, great episode.
God watching those impurities just get hammered out is a thing of joy.
Man I felt that Burn you..Strongs Mate💪💪💪💪....A big fan From SOUTH AFRICA
How about a Damascus bowl? Seems like the pattern would really be presented best that way.
I love your videos,I’m fourteen and an aspiring blacksmith,I love seeing younger people blacksmithing as well
Heard your interview with Lars Larson today on the radio, Portland, Oregon. Now I'm home watching your videos. Just finished the third one and I am hooked! Fantastic Fantastic my brother Alec! You are a blacksmith prodigy, bringing back the grandest trade in the world since 1,200 B.C! Love watching the iron (and copper!) being manipulated. I am a metal artist also, I make steel wall sculpture, and would love to mix in some blacksmithing some day. Very inspiring, thank you so much! And your editing and background music is awesome.
I have a feeling that in a couple of years, someone's going to come up and ask me if I've heard of your channel. I'll roll my eyes and say, "yeah - I've known about him for years. Get with the times, man."
Try to forge a miniature anvil !
Nice use of hammer brilliantly done jelly roll
Hey Alec Steele... I been watching your, and other, videos and learn and I really want to get into Blacksmithing myself. I think about it a lot and before I even finished watching I saw the issues you were having and came up w/a possible fix for it.
Depending on the desired final size of Jelly Roll Damascus you want (i.e. 4" square) make a "Squaring Die" by cutting 4 pieces of 2"x2" angle iron about 3-4" long and weld them to a plate side-by-side w/the corners up, and repeat w/the other 2 pieces of angle iron. Then modify those 2 plates where they will attach to your power hammer or Hydraulic press where the angled corners meet up "point-to-point" and parallel to each other. The final resulting "squaring dies" will look like a Capital "W" sitting on top of a "M". (However, if you want your final size to be 3" square, use 1-1/2" angle iron, etc, etc...)
Then, rather than forge-welding like you did w/flat dies this will force the steel to weld by pressing on it from four directions at once.
One other Idea is to make a "Rounding Die" where the 1" angle iron pieces are spread out enough to set and weld a thick walled piece of iron pipe in-between them that has been cut in-half lengthwise. Say you wanna keep the Jelly Roll Damascus round at about 3" in diameter. (pardon me if my math would be off, but I'm brainstorming here and I hope you get the idea) Use a section of say 3-1/4" INSIDE DIAMETER pipe split down the middle with a 1/4" wide cut. When the 2 halves are put back together and measured, instead of it being 3-1/4" ROUND, it would be kinda oval in shape 3" up n down & 3-1/4" side-to-side. These 2 halves, mounted as above, would take a rolled-up piece of steel aprox. 3-3/8" - 3-1/2" in diameter and crush-n-weld it, AS YOU STRIKE IT AND TURN IT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ROLL AND STRIKE IT AGAIN, and again. This will help it weld together and NOT come undone at the end while leaving it planished @ about 3" in diameter.
You can make another "Rounding Die" smaller or larger depending on what your desired size is, and you can start w/a large one and step it down smaller if you want. You can also use the Rounding Die to get it all welded up nice n pretty n symmetrical, then a suitable-sized "Squaring Die" to get it squared for further shaping w/out de-laminating.
Let me know what you think and if you make a large enough chunk of Jelly Roll, round or square, make a Rounding Hammer out of it!! I'd Buy That !! Cheers! Alec
Is anybody watching in 2019?
I am and this workshop is a far cry from what he rolls in now. He was really roughing it here.
Yep!
Who cares what year you are watching it from
2020 now
Watching in 2020
make anything that will stop you from trying to catch flying pieces of steel
I loved your video on "Jelly-roll Damascus". I was wondering why you didn't run a bead across the end of the strap, so that it wouldn't unroll on you, so it WOULD forge weld. Also, you asked for ideas...most people would say a blade of some sort, but what about a "dream-catcher" type dish that is flattened out and a rim drawn up and out...like a fancy saucer or cookie dish. That way you could lean it to show the beautiful Damascus style art you've created. Thanks again for your time and equipment and the will to make these wonderful videos!
Perhaps one of the best looking finished jelly roll Damascus I have seen on CZcams. Great work, maybe a jelly spreading knife? Seems fitting, or is it just me?
maybe make it into a neck knife the aren't that big so ideal for that billet!
fak ya or a boot knife!
You ok after that hot metal flew at you?
Joshua Skin grows back :)
@@fiddykooro3541 Assuming there's any of it left, yeah.
@@mduckernz good thing it wasn't that bad of a burn
from what ive seen with JR Damascus, they have always tapered it at the front before rolling it up, and at the end using some angle presses to get it to forge weld. I say this because you managed it even without that. Kudos man.
Nice work, once again, Alec. Congrats!
One shows skill and adaptability when things go wrong, not when all is easy and goes as planned. So well done.
I only tried jelly roll once, but knowing I would grind it later, I kind of cheated and tig welded across the spiral before final heat, and made the first welding pass by hand.
And I always go for flux (althoug I make and use a dry version, using Jim Hrisoulas method).
It lowers welding temp a lot and makes cleaner weldings.
Second video and I've subscribed. Thanks for awesome videos so far!
+Wesley Mills Thanks Wesley!
Wesley Mills the awkward moment you find someone with your same first and last name.....
+wave no wave we should be friends then
I don't see why not.
Looks like you earned some scars on that one, was almost very bad!
After watching a few of you videos, i wasn't quite sure about you. But after seeing that bandage, I'm sold.
Man I'd love to make a ring from that stuff! Looks totally unique. Great work.
Cut it in half to make two pieces and pop'em in your glasses 😵😵😵
A nooby question for a blacksmith, but I haven't tried forgewelding yet... Does flux reduce the temperature needed to forgeweld steel or it just makes it easier for the pieces to connect? Cool damascus btw :p
Jan Pielesiak If I'm not mistaken, it's to keep the iron from oxidizing.
It's just a detergent. Sulfur can lower the melting point of steel, but that's a bad thing, borax/boric acid just melts and dissolves the oxides on the surface, and doesn't stick tenaciously to the steel, so when you hammer/scrape/etc, the crud gets carried away in solution with the borax.
Good question!
thanks c:
Jan Pielesiak it provides a barrier and protects against oxidation.
Both. It removes oxides and seals the surfaces so no new oxides form, making a better connection due to cleaner surfaces. And thus, reduces the welding temp by about 100ºC...
I loved the music so much more back then.
Being a ring maker myself, i would be amazed to see a ring made out of this.
You should quarter the billet, invert the squares and weld it into a pinwheel type pattern before slicing it up for belt buckles
Tomahawk was a much better idea
Could you blow nitrogen across while forging to limit scale production? Not for every project, but say if you wanted to do something like this where you'd expect a bit of extra trouble.
Casey Wagner Nitrogen is pretty reactive in its own right, so he'd probably end up with a bunch of iron nitrides, which aren't real fantastic for one's health as they decompose.
Nothing beats a jelly-filled Damascus roll!
Should reattempt jelly roll in your new shop in America. New tools plus your experience over the past couple years should make it even more awesome!
Have you submitted an entry to forge in fire yet? lol Where are you from? I see the Texas flag in your shop but the accent throws me off.
93jcoop either he's English and live in Texas or the other way around.
Calvin Whizz he’s English and he lives in England.... is he not allowed to have a Texan flag without either livening their or being Texan?
93jcoop he lives in england and he is english he is allowed the texas flag though
It's actually the Chilean flag

8-2020. I watched this video again. After a few years. I miss when you use to do these instructional type videos.
Just discovered Alec a little while ago and have been watching a lot of the old vids. When he got burned it reminded me a lot of last summer when I was working in a chem lab bending small-ish pieces of glass for an upcoming experiment, and dropped a piece, not taking the time to think "hmmn, maybe trying to catch red hot glass with my bare fingers (which I did, like a dumbass) would be a bad time."
I would call this cinnamon roll damascus.. jelly roll makes no sense at all. Ijs
this dudes confidence
It's nice to watch some of the early videos again. I do hope that Mr. Pilkinton's new owner is treating him well
Just watched this again in December 2020. You've really come a long way in three years. Congrats and keep being bad ass
It is fantastic to be back here again young Alec !! ❤
Alec, just a thought: maybe take a wipe you wouldn't mind forging into the roll and weld it to the inside of the drawn out steel so once all of the layers are rolled up you have this nice pipe sticking out the center of it. should help you during the welding process so you can get a nice even weld since you'll be rolling it and it ensures the steel doesn't fly about...
wonderful! persistence and patience is key.
I like the neck knife idea
For the circular welding, you need different dies on your power hammer. Get some that have a 90 degree slot in them. When the two come together, they should form a square hole. It isn't a perfect grip, but it will allow you to apply pressure to 4 points of the thing instead of two, and keep everything together
The burn on your hand constitutes that "little bit of fail" you felt coming on. Great job on the jelly roll!
Ive grabbed a rebar without my glove on with one side glowing hot and i thought i cooked my skin off and you just catch a red hot cube in your wrist and shake it off like its nothing, you sir are a madlad.
I love every part of this video. So awesome.
I'm glad you kept working at it and didn't give up. The jealous ones can suck it! LOL!
Someone has to draw a picture of Alec sprinkling flux powder like salt bae. That would be one of the coolest pics to put on a t-shirt!
Man your videos have come along way and so has your skill
I’m a huge fan from Brazil man!!! Your videos are saving my quarantine. Thank you so much my man! 👊👊👊
you can use a set of diamond shaped dyes on a press and its way easer
Minute 4:36 OUCHH!!
you are a genious man! I love your job!
a year ago I started making knives
and your work inspires me!👏🏻👌
Greetings from Paraguay!!
I don't know if you already done this, but what do you think about making a screw Damascus? Basically start with a long square rod and twist it like a screw. In my imagination it should have diagonal-ish lines once you cut it in half
Ouch! That had to sting Alec. But as the saying "If you can't fix it with duct tape, it's broken" I'm glad that you somewhat bandaged that burn. That piece of steel would make a really nice belt buckle.
jelly roll damascus ninja stars would look so cool!
Now you're what we call a badass
That looks awesome. Great job!
Brilliant man. Great content. Keep it up!
