    The Desert Tech Quattro is a dedicated 53 round lower that accepts proprietary magazines. Is it reliable? Does it make sense? What's a good use for it? We break the DT Quattro down.

    Check their videos… matching military drop testing and the mags still run. Far simpler than a drum or multi-spring SureFire. As much as you see foreign militaries using mag couplers, this is a far superior option.

  • @sporkstar1911
    @sporkstar1911 Před 3 měsíci +5

    Its the future of rifles.
    The key is the way the magazine is made, which makes it much more reliable than regular quad stacks, no forcing cone to jam it up.
    Imagine how much 5.7 or 4.6 it can hold. If you transition to using guncotton for propellant that ammunition becomes twice as powerful, make it a longer case and it'll be as strong as an intermediate round. A slightly longer magazine and it'll probably hold 80. Imagine applying these principles to anything in battle rifle calibers (capacity 40, 50...)
    Ex, a 6.8mm with new propellant and a .223 parent case will have battle rifle capability and carry 60 rounds standard. Use a double shot trigger like an echo or binary and you have enough rapid fire without full auto uncontrollability. Superior firepower without losing volume of fire.

    What interests me would be shortening it to the length of a 20 round double stack or maybe even a little shorter. I have never liked how much the 30 rounders extend from a gun. So one could go shorter and yet still have 30 rounds. The system does look interesting, but honestly common double stack magazines are fine with a semiauto weapon. I still usually aim and 20 rounds for me is a lot of shooting.
    If one has an FRT trigger I could see the quad magazines.

    *35.6 oz (P-Mag x 2) - 28.7 oz (quad stack mag) = 6.9 oz difference.*
    *I often read / hear that 12 magazines is the recommended minimum loadout for situations where you would need such things. As we're comparing 2 standard mags to the quad mag, we'd then divide that in half.*
    *So the weight savings of the quad stack mags over the P-Mags is 6 x 6.9 oz = 41.4 oz or a little over 2 1/2 pounds. That's not an insignificant weight savings when ounces feel like pounds while rucking over hard terrain. Hmmmm....they may be on to something.*

    • @jackjohnson291
      @jackjohnson291 Před 3 měsíci

      The only problem becomes how to carry them. I’m not a fan of running two deep on my chest and just spread them out instead (my current setup accommodates 16+). Guess that’s really more of a “me” problem, but I suppose I could find a way around it. Maybe a slung bandolier off to the side or even a belt rig would do the trick, idk. I could definitely see the utility, especially from a stationary, fortified position. In that case, a couple bandoliers should do just fine.

    • @jackjohnson291

    DT did a good job on this product line.
    Got one of these because of the full ambi controls, the QMAGs are a novelty, much like the D60, except I agree with your take, they are extremely functional. The STANAG adapter is awesome as well, and is generally how I will keep my Quattro setup, its easy enough to remove it, and it is designed to interlock with itself when not installed so that it just becomes one piece to keep up with instead of 3. 20/30 rd mags are more prevalent, and they can be reloaded much faster than the QMAGs currently. If someone makes a simple speed loader system for the QMAGs, I might change my mind on the novelty factor of the mags. Also, with the adapter in place, swapping to different caliber uppers is much simpler.
    The ambi controls are very well implemented, I do have some mild concerns about replacement parts if the proprietary bolt catch/mag release is damaged, but thats always a concern for proprietary stuff. I am very much considering getting a few additional Quattro receivers, just because of the ambi controls.

    Just did the wait and have one in hand ... the feed lips on the mag give me pause for concern. We will see. Also, make sure you have a STANDARD MIL SPEC take down pin set, as many will not fit. The front take down pin is rather odd. NOTE: Well, first range trip report finds the mags are very tight in the magwell when loaded, feeding issues with a full mag, and when loading the mags you will lose tension from the feed spring and the rounds will drop right out (just tap mags to set the rounds and you will see).

    It seems like a decent solution for a bump in the night type SBR/pistol when you don't want to worry about grabbing an extra magazine. With that in mind, the question becomes: is it compatible and reliable with 300 BLK (subs and supers)?

    • @jsmorefield
      @jsmorefield Před 3 měsíci

    • @jackjohnson291
      @jackjohnson291 Před 3 měsíci

      @@jsmorefieldIf you’re using 110-115 gr and accounting for the shortened brass, I’m sure its negligible. I’ve never messed with quad stack mags or drums with 300BLK, so I could be way off base on that.

    for civilian it make sense
    like rifle will lay in your car or near the bad and it will hold 50+ rounds
    and if you will take spare mag it will be 100+ rounds but it will only 1 extra mag vs 2 with 30 rounders(and it will be 90 total as well)

    Great system, innovative, effective and affordable but ... the conversion kit to standard 30 round mags is far too fiddly, and if you lose that widget for the magazine release you are stuck 😮
    On this point DT should come up with something that can be used on the field, and allow fast switching between Quattros and standard magazines without opening the gun and without having to fiddle with the widget.

    Gotta admit, when I saw videos on this at Shot Show, I was intrigued. After seeing your video, I’m sold. BUT?
    Too bad I live in Illinois and can’t own it, or a lot of other shit! And I don’t see SCOTUS acting anytime soon! :/
    And here’s the BUT…. Only concern I have is durability in and with that magazine well. How will it hold up if the firearm, with a full quad magazine in it, gets dropped at a certain angle or onto a hard surface or a boulder if you’re hiking or climbing in a rugged area?
    It sucks but I’m kind of glad I can’t have one yet and can give it time to let others do things and test it and see what comes and see if anything durability wise, happens down the road.
