my dell 9440 cost twice as much as my desktop PC that I built and it absolutely destroys editing tasks etc. so yes desktops can be way cheaper for more bang
You know that you can hook up the display and keyboard, right?
My Desktop is a bit like the old family dog... it is always there waiting, but I end up waiting for it.
It is big, getting slower, and I find some newer friends can do even more tricks than it can!
I can rely on it to wag it's tail when it sees me, and it's part of the family.
As an old and faithful friend, I would hate for it to not be there... it's not going anywhere in the forseeable future, but when it reaches it's end of life, I may consider a cat! (Or a tablet.)😜
Another great video, thanks. For my use case desktops are alive and well, for many of the reasons you cited. I like the power and the ability to choose my own peripherals (especially a large monitor). But I also have a laptop for travel, and a tablet that I use primarily for content consumption. I know a good tablet would cover the travel and content consumption aspect, but the apps I need just aren't there yet for business use.
That makes a ton of sense Bryan - I know I would struggle with even the largest laptop monitor if it was my only option.
I've been hearing that the death of the desktop was months ago for about twenty years now at least.🤭 I have a laptop that hasn't been turned on in 8 months, my only tablet died a few years ago but my desktop isn't going anywhere. No matter how much we try to shrink stuff it's hard to imagine getting all the stuff I use every day into a laptop form factor.

I love desktops because theyre completely yours, you can control everything inside them. They also tend to last much longer than any laptop would. I just wish they were portable lmao. I want a laptop because I want to be able to do work in my bed, or on the couch. Instead of just at the chair.
@XcapSupa you can always move your desktop and connect it with your telly in the living room. Get wireless mouse and keyboard and enjoy doing whatever you are doing from coach!

I use my home desktop for work from home use (and some casual internet time). Laptop for my outdoor use and tablet at all areas and gaming (besides my playstation console). I needed them all that they have their own purposes. I may upgrade these devices if budget permit for later years. Thanks for the content, happy for it mate cheers! Desktops will stay.

I actually employ all 3. And I'm at best, a hobbyist.
My desktop, which I recently replaced due to it being a 15 year old unstable machine, is a gaming rig to which I replaced the i5 proc with an i7 with 32gb of dual RAM, and a newly acquired 27" LG 4k monitor. I'm just waiting on additional hard drive space. This is my main workhourse for any and all computing activities.
My laptop was originally a Lenovo T520, again an old machine that's probably 12 years old with busted USB 2.0 ports. Only recently replaced with a Lenovo E15 gen2. This was my desktop backup if my old system ever failed before being replaced. It's now my travel mate, acting as my file transfer hub for all my cameras, and some lite video/photo editing (which I only recently started to self learn).
And my Samsung S7 tablet rounds it up. Also a fairly recent addition. It does some colour grading of my keepers off my Canon R7, while on the move.
NowI know it sounds like I dumped a ton of money into something that's just a hobby...well...I have a bit of a confession. Almost none of it is brand new. 70% of what I have is either used or refurbished. Some are new, but open box purchases. All in all, I should have spend easily $5000(can) on everything I listed BNIB, but in reality, it was less than $2k.

I’ve been using the 12.9” iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard for years and have never needed anything else. I do have an iPad Mini for when I want something smaller & more portable.

I have been using laptops at home for 20 years now. At work I installed micro PCs as workstations. For CAD, video editing and gaming you still need a PC. In a few years from now your phone will be powerful enough to run most Microsoft office and basic photoshop software and with cloud storage most people won’t even need a computer at home or work.

This video definitely helped and I'm starting to lean towards the desktop option, but I still have mixed opinions.
I've been using a laptop throughout high school but since I'm going to college next year, I have been worried whether to get a gaming laptop or desktop, especially since I'm going into art or specifically, hopefully animation both 2D and 3D digitally. As a student, I'm questioning to focus on portability or a stronger desktop.
Any opinions?
For the most part - I would do a powerful desktop and then an entry level laptop or a tablet with keyboard for when I need something in class. This way you get all the power you need for gaming and digital art. You probably don’t need that much power in a portable device and you’d have to pay a crazy premium to have it.
Opinion: Change major due to exponential growth of AI alternatives in that field. Time and profit inefficiencies of humans attempting to generate subpar results are already becoming to costly to ignore by any major digital art employer.
Just returned to a true desktop after having a laptop for the last 3 years. 3 years ago I upgraded from the Mac mini to the M1 MacBook Pro, now I have returned to the M2 Pro Mac mini. I have my iPad Pro for on the go but it doesn't do all I need like Localhost (Mamp Pro) and editing from external drives & plugins in Final Cut Pro. But I do all this from my desk, so a desktop works better for me and then on the go I have my iPad Pro which I can do everyday tasks from including photo editing. I don't think desktops are dead, they are just evolving... Plus it depends on your use case, a Apple Store employee recently told me if you are going to use a laptop mostly at your desk in clamshell mode, then get a desktop, only get a laptop if you are mostly using it portable...

Yeah I lived out that experiment and I know why its not the best idea to try to use a laptop as a true desktop replacement. After a few years the battery had nearly exploded and my MacBook Pro had swelling under the trackpad and on the bottom case. Lesson learned is anything that has a battery is meant to constantly charge and discharge, but the chemistry of modern batteries isn’t made to sit at one charge at all. You might get a year, you might get three like I did. But eventually a docked portable will see the battery fail, and sometimes that is risky, and sometimes its harmless, but in either case a Mac Mini or IMac or Studio is the way to go for long term desktop users.

Definitely getting to that point for the average user that doesn't require a dedicated work station.
It's insane in real life - it's huge and then just folds into such a small and portable device!
Another Interetsing Video, which asks good questions, I use a Samsung S8 Ultra with keyboard for most things and use of DEX if need be and a Desktop I was going to bin but I am keeping now. I use that for work reasons and editing and have just cleaned it up and it's still good.
Tempted to take a look at the Samsung Book 3 laptop though next year but can hold off for now.

The question is can you dock a laptop and have it wired directly into a power outlet 24/7, with peripherals attached, basically transforming it into a desktop of sorts - and doing all of this while not shortening the life of the battery and the other internals due to heat and airflow issues when compared to your standard tower? Because that is how I would use a laptop. I have been considering it, truly, but I am concerned that with my usage (I need a workstation powered 24/7 without having to constantly worry about battery issues) any laptop will have a much shorter lifespan than a desktop proper. Plus the towers aren't as big and heavy as they used to be. For that reason, I am thinking that I'll likely upgrade to another desktop unless someone can convince me that a laptop will perform better and for more years than the aforementioned usage I described. Portability is always useful, but phones cover most bases nowadays at least for basic use.
I had an Ipad Air 4 for 3 years and gave it away as it had started becoming quite limited for my workflow. So took a plunge for Macbook Air M1 8gb 256 gigs (for 700$ - brand new) a month back and I am really happy with this shift. Planning for a mac mini later down the road as the need arises. But for now - for all my creative needs (composing music, photo and video editing as well as got in blender software a couple of bdays back) , office needs as well as for my studies, research and reading- the Air m1 just breezes through with great battery life .... ooo and also media consumption - love what the macbook offers compared to the ipad for the same price

That's an interesting HP folding screen you had in the video. I'll take a look at one of those but I think I'll wait a few generations before thinking about purchasing one.

@@TechGearTalk I use the desktop for video editing, recording digital copies of LP's, photography (i.e. Photoshop), writing and many other uses.
I have a good laptop but I much prefer the ergonomic keyboard I got for my desktop over the laptop keyboard.
I can use the laptop keyboard for limited amounts of time but if I'm using the computer at home (home office) for any length of time I use the desktop.

It's not the Desktop that's dead, it's the Mac that's dead.
A set of PCs with dual or triple monitors, good speakers(I am using a pair of Pioneer speakers from 80's), and a good mouse and keyboard (such as Realforce) will provide a much better user experience than a mobile phone or tablet.
The average user is a consumer.
Mobiles - Consumer mostly, only useful for the Boss's work (calls/meetings)
Tablets - Consumer mostly, only useful for Project managers (presentation)
Laptops - Consumer mostly, useful for Project managers (presentation/emails/light work), but also useful if one is frequently relocating/working in different settings.
Desktops - Serious work mostly. Perfect for software development (programming, graphics, sound, music, level design, engineering/schematic/touch typing. Performance over style/mobility)
The Desktop PC is probably the best bet. Especially for kids. They're more likely to develop their touch-typing, mouse skills, and general technical use (Desktop PC games are more likely to require using many keys & require the mouse). The others devices (especially phone & tablet) are more likely to encourage a consumer mindset among the youth that use it.
Similar to the 90s. Dual use computers (for consumers: games, and producers: programming) ceased, and we moved to Games consoles for the kids, and computers for the more serious/educated class with dedicated software that could be purchased if you were serious and wanted to try programming. This basically destroyed the home grown game programming era in the West. And of course prior to this in the 70s and 80s was the transition phase when this whole great new technology of computers + software had moved from the privileged universities to the common folk's child.
It was a sweet 10-20 year period, and spawned the greatest software developers.
A similar phenomena is evident in other industries. With the automobile industry, nowadays it's near impossible to get into the industry without going through the formal institution of government education & government-corporate workplace.
As these industries mature, they become more stale as they filter talent through the formal education stem. Rebellious, innovative types are usually filtered out in these years.
My portable is my phone and my desktop is for the home. Nothing beats the much bigger screen size!

I mostly need my device for word processing, and portability is important because I sometimes work outside my office. I just purchased a Samsung Tab S9+ to replace my old Dell XPS. Not sure how that's going to work out since I've only had it for a day, but I'm enjoying it so far!

I've used it for 3 weeks now and on the whole it works well enough for my needs. I'm quite happy with how it works, and will continue using it as a laptop replacement. I have a work laptop so if I need a proper laptop I've got that. But I haven't really had to use my laptop much these past few weeks. Here are the pros and cons of using the Samsung Tab S9+ as a laptop:
Pros:
+ Very light: 938g including keyboard case and stylus)
+ Super long battery life: I can work the whole day without needing my charger, further reducing the weight I carry around, and helpful when I don't have a power outlet e.g. at cafes
+ User-friendly interface: I love using the Dex setup that makes it feel like a laptop
+ Stylus: soft touch, responsive, easy to keep/access, replaces a mouse, never out of battery because it charges up where it docks at the back of the tablet
+ Doesn't generate heat on my lap. Don't miss that about my old laptop. The Dell XPS heats up so easily.
+ Keyboard is nice to use
Cons:
- Some apps don't work as well: Microsoft Word glitches (e.g. when I delete a word, the word before duplicates itself) , the copy and paste shortcut doesn't work across all apps, I've had problems copy and pasting between word docs, and PPT doesn't have the full range of shortcuts when I click and hold a slide
- The tablet and keyboard case isn't stable on the lap
- Touch screen is not 100% accurate. It's hard to close the program from the mini view with my finger, so I have to use the stylus to do that
- Limited angle for the screen, which may be a problem for video calls
- File management: I can't click and drag files between folders like I can on a laptop...I have to click the file, click the move option, and click through to the folder
I did have to make some adjustments e.g. in copy and pasting with apps where the shortcuts don't work, and adjust my expectations on what I can do, but overall I'm pleased.
The Mac Studio M3 Ultra is gonna be a beast worth getting as a desktop, that's for sure. And it's pretty portable too when necessary

Great channel I subbed. Also I NEED windows and the apps that only work on windows and do not have an android/web version. A laptop could work but I also game sometimes and gaming laptops are crap for the amount of money compared to a fully sized pc.

Windows Surface pro. You have a tablet and laptop.
Try to open multiple tabs in a browser on iOS or Android. That is a pain.
Having something do multiple things generally makes it a master of none. iPad and MacBook Air is the same experience but without Windows and its subscriptions and crashes and updates. But its true if you want a true desktop touch and stylus experience it is one of the only options available. A lot of people would see more benefits to having two separate devices for tablet and computer use.

@@saulgoodman2018 It definitely does have subscriptions, but it depends what you’re doing with your computer. Microsoft Office is a subscription for Word and Excel and Power Point. I can do Pages and Numbers and Keynote and IMovie and GarageBand for free with my Apple devices. So I can make albums, edit videos, write a book or essay or magazine, do a presentation, or do taxes and accounting with no added cost and no subscription fee ever. That’s one major advantage of the Apple ecosystem. Windows charges you for the rest of your life and doesn’t even have a music editor or a video editor built in. That fee is just to type and do math in excel.
nah, if your a insane power user like me, i want 4 8k monitors hooked up to a pc with a race/space simulator rig. 4090 just lays waste to portable. but i do have a 4080 laptop, and yeh, it is real fast.

Desktop + Tablet (+ AnyDesk/TeamViewer) is the best combo. You can have your cheap powerhorse, upgreadeable and easily fixable at home, and then an ultralight tablet streaming from your beheamoth of a PC at home😊

As soon as you have any serious interest in gaming, you should really be considering a desktop. They are way more capable than the laptop equivalent for less money.
You might consider a games console, but if you also need a computing device, the cost of that and the games console is similar to a decent gaming desktop, which again, is more capable.
Tablets are not good gaming devices. They are ok for casual use.
I very much agree.
Am seriously considering using my phone as my main computer as I use it the most, may not turn on my "big" computers for months at a time. Already have BT keyboard and mose snd they work well with my phone. Don't get me wrong, but Windows is a maintenance nightmare for someone like me who doesn't use it much anyway. More of a Linux Mint and Android guy these days. So if I ever build another desktop, it would be s smaller unit anyway, with Linux Mint as the OS.
I use my S9 tablet daily, I use my laptop when I need a windows only program, I don't own a desktop.
That makes a lot of sense.
Short answer for me.. NO! But, it has nothing to do with the power or capabilities of other devices. For the average person who surfs the web, does email, watches CZcams or one of the services like Netflix any device today will be fine. For me, it's because I love the desktop experience of having a full size keyboard with a number pad, having a mouse or track ball, and most importantly......multiple, LARGE monitors. I can't understand how people watch videos on a phone! LOL! I also do image editing pretty often so my local storage is pretty hefty. My son actually built me a computer with some kicked up GPUs that I'll never need because I don't game at all! But, like I said, for me it's mostly about having large monitors and the full size keyboard. Have a great weekend!
Sometimes if I am watching digital junk food then I actually prefer the small screen. Social Media, casual CZcams, podcasts or music, the smaller the screen the better I can focus on the information or the task at hand. But Desktops are still the only way to go for deep research or multitasking, and completing projects where every detail counts, or gaming. But yeah, smaller screens actually help me not get sucked into social media or the news or things that take our focus. It’s easier to get immersed at a desktop and sometimes that actually is a distraction from my work.

It would come down to what you plan on using it for. Does the Mac Studio offer significant and meaningful advantages to you? Or would a PC fill a different gap

I bought and use a MacBook Pro, but i will keep my Mac mini! I need my mini at Home. I need this fixed place where everything is always the same. The laptop is on the go.
In addition, you can upgrade individual parts and do not have to replace the entire device. My 4K display is great and I just have to buy a new Mac mini at some point. I can keep the display, keyboard and mouse.

Uptill now I was using a free Video Editor on Windows Named " VSDC" for College Assignments but after purchasing iPad Air 5th gen, it gets all my job done with that M1 powered beast. I did not wanted to spend way more for Pro's as Air gets all my job done, and honestly it is far more superior than windows PC or Laptops. Amazing Content of this video, HatsOff 🎉to you.

...One thing I've noticed: roughly every 4 yrs I need to buy a new laptop and every time I find I spend literally as much or a little more to get the same specs I bought 3-4 yrs ago. Yes the intel (etc) items are a later generation. But often not the current equivalent of what was available last time.
...Methinks 80% of R&D and marketing goes into phones, hence everything else is usually a little disappointing. A thousand dollars (whatever price point, just picking a number here) today should buy a laptop WAY better than what it bought 4 years ago. But it doesn't. I shopped around and ended up with something roughly the same as what I bought 4 years ago, just new and working. ...If you're all about the phone and tablet, you're getting the best of what's out there (in a way).

I think there are times where you see a leap - ex. Apple moving to the M1 chip. But then m2 and m3 are incremental.
told myself ill never buy mobile devices again cause they only have 4 to 5 years of actual OS support. theyre completely useless if we cant even use the device for non complex apps like streaming,shopping, and banking. ill just buy a laptop cause it would run longer than mobile devices

naw they're dead by next generation of graphics card. Just picked up a asus z13 love it! It's slightly underpowered (i have the base version gpu 4050 laptop edition), cyberpunk will play on medium textures, 4k, and the lowest raytracing at 40fps. when the next version comes out with a 5050 gpu there's no point buying a desktop. I had a desktop, laptop and tablet... now it's all one.
I have ipad wich I regret buying, and all the accessories, except magnetic stand. I thought that I would be playing genshin impact for hours, actually played maybe once. So no use of gamepad too.. I also got pen with cover and fancy leather tips for painting - I tried paining just once... so I didn't become digital artist... Plus unnecessary fancy case-cover, which I never use, because I never take it with me anywhere, it's too big and heavy. Mechanical keyboard was another disappointment..
iOS just sucks for me - cannot install apk, cannot watch movies from usb,
So really most important - your realistic scenarios of use. I only need a device for media consumption at home. I'm thinking between bigger android tablet or windows laptop or even phone with msg cable and external portable monitor.
I agree that the most important thing is what your actual needs are 👏🏻

What do you mostly use it for?
I work from home in HR and use online tools, so I work in a browser with 15-20 tabs open at all times. I’m also a photographer and use Photoshop and Lightroom, and sometimes Premiere Pro. I occasionally play games, such as CS 2. I have a laptop, but I barely use it, and I have an iPad Pro M2 for social media and CZcams when I’m not on my PC. I have two 4K monitors and my PC has 64GB of RAM. I cannot replace it with anything else.
no DESKTOP are not dead as long as hobbies and gamers still custom building despite the high prices of parts for it. pre-built desktop? maybe.
