Tarikh is a daily Hindi program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and Incidents. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about The Julius and Ethel Rosenberg case, a highly controversial and divisive political event that took place during the early years of the Cold War. The case involved allegations of espionage and the passing of nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union, and ultimately resulted in the conviction and execution of both Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were American citizens who were born and raised in New York City. During the 1940s, they became involved in left-wing political activism and were affiliated with the Communist Party of the United States. In 1950, they were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit espionage, specifically for allegedly passing classified information about atomic bomb technology to the Soviet Union.
The trial of the Rosenbergs was highly controversial, with many on both sides of the political spectrum weighing in on the case. The prosecution relied heavily on the testimony of Ethel Rosenberg's brother, David Greenglass, who claimed that Julius had recruited him to pass atomic secrets to the Soviets. Greenglass also claimed that Ethel had typed up the classified documents that were given to the Soviets. The Rosenbergs denied the charges against them and maintained their innocence throughout the trial.
Despite the controversy surrounding the case, the Rosenbergs were found guilty and sentenced to death in 1951. Their case continued to garner attention and controversy, with many arguing that the evidence against them was weak and that they were being unfairly targeted because of their political beliefs. There were also allegations of anti-Semitism, as the Rosenbergs were Jewish.
