Ditching My Apple Watch For Garmin Forerunner 965

  • I've been having issues with my Apple Watch during workouts and it's been frustrating. The thought of switching to Garmin has been going through my mind, but I love having everything Apple and the eco-system of Apple products you can't beat.
However, after several issues not tracking properly, and having to turn it off before workouts for it to work properly, Apple Watch made me make this decision.
Over the last few weeks, I have been using the Garmin Forerunner 965 nearly 24/7 to test it out and see how I like it. I will say that I absolutely like it much more than my Apple Watch and wish I would have gotten it sooner. Although some things could be better or that I noticed during my use so far.
These are some of the things that I like and dislike so far.

Can’t go wrong with the 965. It’s the same as the Epix 2 but made with cheaper materials. Internally it’s identical and it even has a little bigger screen than the 47 mm one. I have the Ultra 2 and the Epix Pro 51mm. The battery life of the Ultra 2 doesn’t really bother me, but the metrics of the Garmin wins out for me. I love how Garmin takes all your info on your runs and activities and gives you insightful ideas on how to improve on your performances.

Awesome, appreciate all this information! I do like all the information that Garmin gives you about your training and best approaches (although I tend to just ignore what it says lol).
I do really like how long the battery life lasts for my Garmin. I wasn't too sure about the Ultra 2, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be nearly as good as the 965.

Great summary and dont understand why this channel is so underrated. You covered all the points needed to be covered. I am rightnow in the same boat, thinking if an upgrade to Garmin is better over my Watch Ultra mainly due to battery. How does the Strava integration works with Garmin and overall experience of the Sync between Garmin and Iphone?

    • @TylerSinden
      @TylerSinden  Před 2 měsíci

Thank you! I haven't tried the Ultra, so a bit more tough for me to compare.
The integration between Strava and Garmin seems seamless and better than Apple. The only syncing delay would be between the watch and the Garmin Connect app (iPhone). I usually need to go into the app and hit sync for it to collect the data, once it collects it, then it's usually instantly sent to Strava.

I’ve got the garmin fenix 7 and One of the main features I use is the body battery. It’s a great indicator of your recovery. 👍

I see a lot of people on Strava with that watch. It seems that my body battery always gets back up to 90-100 every morning. Is that normal?

On the double writing to Apple Health you are seeing, Strava is the culprit - it’s often better to turn that off.
This does though mean that Strava is just the input for activities published by other devices, including Garmin and whatever you are using as far as hardware on the Zwift side.

Great review! Try the rainy widget if it's available for that model, I found it to be the most "useful" among weather apps on Garmin, I am struggling with weather on Garmin a lot too. Currently on Apple Watch and having the same internal debate, Apple Watch is totally unreliable with tracking unfortunately, the only thing that keeps me stuck on it is the ability to make emergency calls if needed.. just feels safer, I know I'm boring :-D

Yeah, I really debated it for a while having the whole Apple ecosystem. That's fair for the safety precaution, but I will say I'm loving my Garmin!

@@TylerSinden I'd be curios to know how it works on a Forerunner, I tried it on a Garmin Instinct 2X, it did the job well but the display was a big limit for visibility. For cycling, the only proper way to calculate calories burned is with a power meter. You will get work done in joules, which is then converted to calories via a multiplier

    • @TylerSinden

Good to know! I do have a power meter now and seems to have been very similar to what the Garmin was saying before I got it. Apple was way off.

Regarding showing the time easier during activities, you can customize the activity screens and change the data fields to display the clock. That also goes for a ton of other fields you can customize.

    • @JasonRaneses

And then maybe get a Velcro strap if the original strap hurts your wrist. They are really easy to change. Also if you don’t like when they get wet you can switch between 2 straps.
