New to AOE, and holy crap, this guide video was SO good! Learned so much about the English and finally understand how the faction works and now have a big picture idea of what to focus on. Highly looking forward to watching the guide on the French! Keep up the great work and thanks for the videos 👍🏼
Thanks so much for watching brother :)
One of my favorite memories of aoe2...it had just come out and I'd tested it as MS for direct X 8 and knew a lot of the audio codes. Me and my bros played for the first time and in the first 3 minutes of the game I kicked off the wololo sound effect and I hear my bud yell what the FFFFF and I almost fell out of my chair laughing
hahahahahahaha i fucking lvoe that
Really solid coverage man. Clearly laid out and well spoken. Thanks :)
Thanks so much for watching guys! LOTS of guides and content coming, if you'd like to hear anything specific about the game, feel free to let me know and I'll add it to the list :)

Can you make guides for ottoman and Malian?
This was perfect. Can't wait for the rest!
Longtime AoE2 player who just mustered up the courage to dive back into the series and I think English is the route for me as I'm a bit range/defense player. This was great. Much appreciated, buddy
wow, Italian Spartacus makes all the videos I want to watch.
Looking forward to a video like this on every faction.
The Berkshire Palace is an absolute monster. If the enemy doesn't have a ton of siege they literally can't take it. I've put the BP at a choke point and just absolutely mowed down enemies. With the upgrades it literally fires a machine gun of arrows.
Started playing AOE for the first ever with 4 coming out , and after 4 days I'm hooked! You provide great info to guys like me trying to not suck and understand what the hell we are doing..
Hi Italian, a bit late to the party, but have just bought the game although have played all others in the franchise. This video really helped me get back into it, will be making a point of checking all your AOE content going forward. Thank you
Nice video, very informative! cheers
Looks so good!
thank you for doing these!!!
Of course! Thank you for watching
Great video! Thanks
Since you started out by saying that some of the units are exactly the same as other civs, I have two quick things to point out. The English Spearmen is automatically upgraded to Hardened for them when they hit Feudal Age. Other civs must upgrade to get that quality level. Of course, English do have to pay for two upgrades on their Men-at-arms as a counterpoint, but no biggie if you never plan to use those and simply need Spearmen. ;)
2nd thing is that the English get a unique tech for their Trebuchets "Shattering Projectiles". It gives modest increased splash damage. Seems like a somewhat underwhelming feature to be fair, but it does technically make them better. The only problem seems to be the relative inaccuracy of Trebuchets in general. Once you get a critical mass of Trebuchets, they absolutely work as long range unit killing artillery! English players are likely to get that Wrynguard Army in many games, so there's a nice and cheap trickle of trebs. There's often tons of Trebs in most of the games I've seen with English players. You did mention this tech later in the video, but I figured it was worth highlighting more here. :)
Looking forward to this game! Thanks for covering this game. I start following you for the mount and blade content, but this a great one as well( haven’t played it yet but I played aoe 1, 2 and 3 back in the day,…….yeah I’m a dinosaur 🦖 😅).
Thank you so much man! I have a ton of BL content planned too so don't you worry :)
You’re so good man. I’m to scared to try a regular match I’ve been doing the story mode missions getting steam rolled by the AI even in those haha
Loving these aoe4 videos!
Thanks for the video
Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks for the vid. New player and I brought a lot of friends with me.
Dumb question: what should my villager vs army units ratio be? Late game i end up with too many villagers and more resources than I can spend
At the absolute most you'd probably want around 90, but feel free to highlight a group, then hold delete. This will remove them for you and you can make a bigger army. Or! Worse comes to comes, make a wonder with the 3k resources :)
Absolutely brother! Happy it helped!!
Really enjoying your content mate. Do you have a script about topics or do you write it down completely as an article and read it?
So in this video, it's entirely off the top of my head. I JUST posted a beginners Tips video and that's scripted :)
Wonderful 🙂
Hi! May I ask you a question?
How do you get in that game mode?
Thanks so much for this video! I learn a lot!
Wish you would do some guides for finishing mastery challenges
Coming from starcraft so amped to learn a new RTS
Just joined your Patreon! :D
Oh shit Thank you so much!
@@italianspartacus welcome!!!
Thanks
one question: when we garrison units into a defensive building (a keep or a watchtower), do the arrow damage follows' the building's arrow damage value or the unit's ranged damage value?
Say if i garrison a longbowman into a tower, and a crossbowman into another, will the damage be different, or the same?
And here I am still playing age 2
Me too. Still have the big old PC CD case👍
@@bigcrazewolf I was a contractor at MS testing direct X 8.0 in 2001ish and AOE 2 was on our test pass. Nothing as fun as getting uncle Bill to pay you to play aoe every Friday
@@darkhighwayman1757 wow that's sweet😲
@@bigcrazewolf the devs used to talk shit to us about how they would crush us since they were level 2 nerds. Nope, it was test team domination 8/10 times.
So I just started my first playthrough. Im currently doing the Norman campaign tutorial, so are you saying that all these cool things like strong farms, and palings for the archers are not available to the other factions?
that would suck a little...
So England definitely isn't the most inspired faction, but I like it, that's kinda their whole thing is that their essentially just the 'vanilla' faction. I enjoyed them in the beta. Just sticking keeps everywhere that could train units was pretty fun.
Yeah just a very much, "get used to the game with the basics" style of faction :)
What do you mean by "if you forgot to upgrade your man at arms"? Do I have to upgrade them in every age - I can't upgrade them to fully only in the last age if needed?
You certainly can wait till the last age to upgrade them. Just don’t forget to upgrade them, would be pretty sad to make a bunch of vanguard man at arms just to see them get demolished by their castle age counterparts.
These guides are amazing. Cannot wait for Delhi and the Abbasids.
HRE and Abbasids are next :)
Is it worth building crossbowmen as English or do Longbowmen win out even against armoured units because of their superior rate of fire with things like volley?
I'd say it depends on what you are facing. If dealing with a huge force of heavy armor units like Knights and Men-at-arms, some Crossbows will be nice. They don't complement the Longbows super well in the same control group though. Shorter range, and having mixed units in the same group often turns off some abilities, for some strange reason. If you're willing to deal with it though, they can help pack a great punch for you. :)
Do English keeps buff allied armies too? Also do allied keeps buff English armies?
Game Pass is so worth it.
in multiplayer im Brulefer, not sure if I played with any of you. basically I play the French. In multi player I have 90 villagers by mid game, then I trade like crazy with allies.
I typically dont do pikeman or spearmen with my calvary which I should to protect them, but on a giant map I use calvary to assist my allies siege weapons. I also tibute my stronger allies a lot of gold or food wood etc, stone
Looks like I'm second, been wondering when they would bring back AOE
It's a delight my bro :)
I'm still playing age 2
@@darkhighwayman1757 lol nice
Tea and colonies for everyone :D
FAR AND WIDE!
"Incontinent!" is the appropriate thing for the French to be shouting on account of them being French.
For England 🇬🇧
And the skull throne!!
If the Wynguard Palace produced bombards instead of trebs I’d be all over it.
so it's literally just AoE 2 2.1
Essentially, it plays extremely similar
Which is exactly what most people wanted
Haha I’m first
The English are a pretty weak civ unfortunately. The only thing they have going for them is longbows but that isn't as impressive going mid to late game when you consider it to be essentially a strong skirmisher. Putting aside the longbowmen they don't have much unique units or useful techs. Enclosures sounds nice but because its a last age tech its hard to really make any solid use of it. Their landmarks are also quite poorly thought out in comparison to many other civ landmarks. Two keeps and a basic TC that don't really do anything more then their standard buildable counterparts do. As a defensive civ these aren't even the best keep landmarks in the game. Wynguard palace isn't worth much because to produce a 40 unit army not counting artillery you end up with 10 trebuchets which you most likely won't need so even with the discount the cost per useful unit is way too high. Also it is unlikely you will be able to have all the tech upgrades done for all the units types or need all the unit types in the army that it produces. The Abbey of the Kings is impressively useless, especially when your longbows have a healing tech that makes it obsolete . The council hall honestly is not as good as it looks. It is nice to have longbowmen but it is essentially 2 archery ranges so the age up cost isn't even close to covered by the material cost of the two archery ranges it saves you from building. It doesn't have any unique tech or ability so the only reason really to build it is because the Abbey of the Kings is even less useful.
Mass Longbows parked outside of your base with the network of castles buff, that can be pretty scary. A forward base pumping out some complimentary units and the pressure can really mount.
As for late game, I think English can hold it's own. The network of castles buff goes up to 50%, kinda crazy imho. Use volley fire on Longbows and they turn into semi machineguns. If you consider them vulnerable to area of effect, just use loose formation and hold ground stance. Put up your palings if there's enemy cavalry and use artillery to wither your foes down. It can be really effective, from what I've seen so far.
@@hybralisk Is English civilization the best?
@@Rtn7789 not really in most cases. They have some powerful combos and Longbows are a solid unit throughout the game. Just not as strong compared to the economy play of most of the other civs.
Wow. Consider me underwhelmed. Why would I ever take Longbowmen once someone else, like the HRE starts getting some heavy infantry out? Only a bonus against light infantry? That's an absolute joke. Also, they just straight cut the skirmisher unit from the base roster? Like, if you don't rush, you're going to need all those keeps because you're gonna need your crossbowmen and handcannons shooting faster. Like...this is way worse than Age 2 England IMO. It's just....bland and vanilla since all your "unique units" more or less become useless as the game goes on.
I see where you're coming from, but there are a lot of really strong early longbowmen rushes that I've seen where England can just crush the early game
So the attack speed bonus applies to all units, including melee units. The Men-at-arms from English can be pretty strong imho. Also, it's pretty easy to setup outposts all around, thus giving easy buff coverage wherever desired. 25% is great, 50% late game is nuts imho. Pair that with the +70% attack speed Volley Fire tech for Longbowmen, it basically turns them into machine guns.
Their humble Spearmen unit is upgraded right out of the gate in Feudal Age too. All the other civs have to pay to upgrade it. Although they do have to upgrade their Men-at-arms, no problem if you happen to only need spears etc.
I think the English farming bonus is super strong. It starts at +15%, and goes up another 5% each age. Ending up at +30%, meaning you could have a lot less farmers and dedicate more population space to other units or traders etc. Or you could double down on the farming and use the huge amounts of food to tribute sling resources to teammates if playing team games. It's a really strong bonus imho. :)
Oh, and English get that heavy infantry unit you are talking about, one age earlier than HRE. Comparing the two units is a bit tricky, but I honestly think they are pretty close depending on what else is supporting them.
How the hell do i shut up that women's voice up
this looks like empire earth from 2001. the graphics are baaad
This graphic bad? Your eyes have problem dude.
No it doesn't
