  • A first look at some Age of Empires 4 gameplay during the "stress test" open beta. To ease into things I went with a 1v1 as English against the Holy Roman Empire in black forest.

Looks like it's more of a sequel to AOE2 than AOE3 was. My only complaint is that the town center bell is too quiet. It could probably use at least 4x as many DING's, or maybe even just never stop ringing, and getting increasingly louder throughout the match.

You should've been there during the beta. There actually was this bug that, when playing the English, the alarm bell would never stop ringing.
And yeah, when your base gets attacked there'll be an alarm bell, but the English have this "feature" that any defensive building can start the alert for so much as spotting an enemy sheep.

They provided a very good argument against public score. They want to put an emphasis on scouting and prevent players from guessing the enemy strategy from the score. they seem to indicate that in AoE II you can deduce if a player is clicking feudal based on his score for example. I think you should be able to display scores in custom games, but I'm ok with them removing it for matchmaking. It's off putting but people will get used to it.

Showing score is just a weird concept in general. It basically gives you information out of thin air. Objectively speaking it feels like a no-brainer that it shouldn't be a thing in competitive games at the very least. If you want intel on your opponents actions then you should have to actually scout for it yourself

Unless you actively scout them, you should not be able to see how many points he has or deduce through the UI when he advances/builds certain items/buildings etc. like you were able to in AoE 2.
This gives more importance to proper scouting and keeps you on edge.

Seeing all of the icons as nondescript golden pictures overlaid on block colours doesn't describe their function to me - I've literally got to mouse over and check the tooltip every time, especially regarding research and new units. It's asking the *player* to do the interpretation rather than showing what you're creating directly.
As a more broad example, I see the wheat symbol on the build menu and what immediately pops into mind isn't an AoE farm, it's the generic concept of farming, which I associate with the mill building. *PROS*
    + Units speak original dialects
    + Classic RTS controls/hotkeys
    + Interesting tower upgrade mechanics
+ Choice between specialization when advancing age
    + High variety between civilizations
    + Many ways of winning/losing
    + Clear player/team colors
+ Better color-palette than in the closed beta
    *CONS*
    - Game is not responsive (even when playing on 100+ fps it feels like 400ms delay)
    - Units need too much time to react, accelerate, decelerate, start attacking, etc.
    - You cannot wall properly with buildings (although sometimes it looks like you should be able to)
    - Stonewalls feel too big and walls do not follow the grid
    - Some buildings seem to have a redundant role
    - When selecting a unit, its queued up commands are not visible
    - Graphics overall still look a bit cartoony
    - Some models (such as the trees) look both ugly and unrealistic
    - Animations look very rough
    - UI is confusing (especially with the colorless icons) and feels something from an like indie game
    - The tech tree viewer requires too many klicks to expand and get a proper overview
    - Minimap feels very cluttered and it is difficult to distinguish between grass and trees
    - You cannot exit menus by pressing escape (this is more annoying than it sounds when in-game)
    - Some sounds (e.g. Town Center) are generic/annoying
    - Reverb/echo of unit voices is extremely annoying and does not resemble a natural environment at all (sounds like a wet metallic environment)
I played 8 hours so far (I was in the closed beta too). I might not buy the game before the things have been resolved.

Maybe more variety to each country civ’s aesthetic of units aside just architecture, a greater variation of map types, brand new campaigns, new scenarios and stuff like that. • @pie75
      @pie75 Před 2 lety

I seem to have pretty good responsiveness from the stress test, certainly nowhere near 400ms; it feels about as quick as I expect it to, aside from units themselves being slow.
      On the walling,
It's not possible to wall with buildings, I'm quite sure, since they are designed with walkways inside them, so units can pass through them. (much better than having a worker get stuck in the center of 4 houses and having to destroy something) You're only supposed to wall with walls; thus - Walls can be placed anywhere and in any orientation. I think that aligning walls to the grid would be very poor for using them in combat encounters.
I do think this should be better communicated, though.
I think the 'redundant' buildings is a bit disorienting, but I certainly don't dislike it. I like being able to produce longbowmen from the 2nd Age building, as it means I have a source of archers for minimal defensive measures without needing to invest in Ranges if I don't want them.
And with the tech tree viewer, there's a single button to expand it entirely, so I don't think it takes too long to navigate. my problem with it is more that it takes up so little space, it feels very compressed and difficult to read, like my screen is squinting.
For everything else, except the UI, I mostly agree, and/or feel more neutral about it rather than pro/con

Many people have argued about the not so up to date visuals (especially considering the size of the game), it doesn't bother me that much if the gameplay is great, but there's tons of yellow squiggly lines everywhere, I mean, if they're helpful, idk...
