  • In one of the most exciting product announcements of the year, Springfield recently brought out a long-action version of it's superb Model 2020 Waypoint precision hunting rifle.
    Previously only available in short-action cartridges, it's now available in 7mm PRC, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .300 PRC, .270 Win, and .30-06! What a star-studded lineup of long-action cartridges. Now, if I can just convince Springfield to add the .280 Ackley Improved...
    This brief episode details the rifle: concept, components, ergonomics, accuracy probability and guarantee, and so forth. ENJOY!

      I think this, a VX5 3-15 or VX6 3-18, and a case of ammo are the easy button for a great elk rifle. It's probably about 9.5 pounds all up with sling and bipod.

      Nice rifle, a little late in the game and price point is comparable to other carbon fiber manufacturers, don’t like the clip not being flush with the stock, Competition is stiff, we’ll see💪🏻💪🏻

      I have a Fierce Rogue CT in 7PRC. Weighs 6.9# with the Leupold 4x12 scope. Shoots .5 to .75" groups with eldx and sub moa with the CX ammo. Looking forward to finding some of the Terminal Ascent ammo in 7prc. We are always much slower to get new ammo products up here in Alberta.

      @@RustyM80 Oh no man, sorry. I'm in Ohio. Yea I wish I knew 20 years ago what I know now. Very doubtful I would have or have ever had a 7RemMag. One rifle builder I use said it's an inefficient cartridge. Now that I have two 280AIs I know what all the talk is about. The 280AI is a truly remarkable cartridge. My next one is more than likely going to be the 270-280AI, also known as the 270 O'Connor. However, I'm still not sure what the difference is between the O'Connor and the 270 Sherman

    I wonder how I ever survived hunting Roosevelt Elk and Blacktails for years lugging around an old wood stocked Savage 110 7mm Rem Mag with a Tasco World Class 3X9. No carbon fiber, no detachable box magazine. $2500 is a bit much in my opinion. Don't get me wrong it's a great looking rifle but I'd rather spend my money on the hunt than on the gun. I have had three Savage 110's and all of them have shot under 1" with hand loads so I don't see any reason to spend 3X as much.

    • @BackcountryApprentice
      @BackcountryApprentice Před 3 dny +2

      These rifles are just really ergonomic, have a smoother action and are lighter than the 110's. Those Savages can be great shooters though!

      Nothing wrong at all with a more traditional hunting rifle. I've hunted with a 1970's Parker Hale in 30-06 for years and it's extremely accurate. But, as mentioned, when you shoulder and fire these newer rifles (I've chambered and built a few for myself) it's a different ball game in terms of feel and function. Btw, I still grab that old Parker Hale first to go hunt with.

      I wonder what the inflation adjusted price comparison would look like between the Springfield and the Savage?

    • @rogerf7265
      @rogerf7265 Před 3 dny +2

      @@HoffnerPrecision I just bought a Savage 110 VSX HUNTER XP that came with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12X40 scope for $850. It has full cerakote, fluted and threaded barrel, camo synthetic stock with adjustable length of pull and adjustable trigger. I got mine in .243 since I only hunt whitetail and hogs these days but it comes in several calibers for that price including 7mm PRC. When I bought my others in the early 90s they were a little under $400 without a scope. They were just basic wood stocks, no hinged floor plate or anything which wasn't a big deal with the three way safety for unloading. They shot great and carrying them on long hikes was never a problem.

    Is this barrel affixed with a nut so you can switch it out at home after it's burnt out in the1000-2000 round range? If it's 300 prc 2000 round count wouk be lucky. I don't care how great the short life magnum barrel is if it's a PIA to change. No comptent gun smiths anywhere even remotely close to me. Have no doubt it's a great action, barrel and stock but I'd rather it be a ot cheaper than getting a second "free" rifle. Thanks for the great content, very knowledgeable and entertaining.

      just because I've had such a long love affair with the .280 Ackley, I'd pick it. but the 7mm PRC is likely a more practical option because it's now so common.

    I bought one week or so ago and I was extremely shocked at Springfield QC.
    This rifle (in 7 PRC) was nothing like the 6.5 PRC.
    The bolt is totally different and feels terrible. The barrel was touching the stock as well, like everything was bent. I was not going to accept it at the FFL but I just got this order in before this communist CA 11% tax. So I accepted it and will be sending back to Springfield. I really hope I don't regret this and they take care of the barrel and sandy, grundy bolt feel.
    Edit : and yes I did get the rim fire, Springfield shipped it damn near same day, but I certainly would not call it "beautifully built". The moa of 1" at 50yrds is not impressive and not many are getting it even with top shelf rim fire ammo. But I suppose you can't expect much from Turkish builders.
    Great video, hope to see one on a Hera H7 some day

      Hmm... That's too bad! Our sample does have some play when the bolt contacts the metal magazine, causing it to be less smooth than some others. I hope that you get those issues fixed!
