  • In this video I talk about the future plans I have for a Savage 110 in 7mm WSM. I'm going to shoot some factory Winchester ammo and handload a bunch of bullets to see how it compares to 7mm Rem mag, 6.8 Western and 7mm PRC.

      I mean all they set out to do was have the same performance in a short action as compared to their long action counterparts. They did accomplish those goals, the .325 wsm , .223 wssm and .243 wssm I have no clue where they where going with those. For someone with the long action OG probably didnt see a reason to switch.

      @hotramen5952 7 saum is a great cartridge and it's compatible to 7 wsm. But I don't believe it was the main issue.
      It was the law suet and unavailability of God brass to load. A bunch of people were using it for extremely long range. But stopped because of the brass.

    When the WSMs and SAUMS came out I took notice.....for about a minute, then bypassed any notion of pursuing any of them due to my desire, at the time, for power, speed, etc. I had a 300RUM at the time, a 7RemMag, and was contemplating a 7RUM. Even with those, I didn't see longstanding popularity. I was correct about the 7RUM but mistaken with the 300RUM. I was one of many that was put off by a cartridge design where the case capacity was occupied by so much bullet. I really didn't see the point. I got my first WSM in 2023 and that one is a 300WSM, stainless Tikka T3x Lite left hand. ONLY reason I did was because I had a discussion with my gunsmith first about getting a reamer made to mimic the PRC concept, which I did. My 300WSM reamer has a chamber 0.002 larger than SAAMI (thanks to Alex Wheeler), and a longer throat. My dummy round has a 210 Berger seated long. I just had to get a long action mag for that Tikka and a long action bolt stop. Very happy I did. I have more barrels coming for different actions to use that reamer and already have once completed. I'm very pleased with the outcome.

    The biggest missed opportunity for hunters/reloaders … that brass is like gold bars… don’t flaunt it lol I don’t see a revival but I do wish it was alive and well!! BTW… they stretched the cases on the small bores to prevent chambering in the larger caliber rifles. It limited the neck length for the 7mm. Some claim accuracy issues because of that but more folks than not loved to shoot it for a true hunting setup. Going to be fun to watch.

    Just remember, the “perfect” neck length only needs to be the diameter of the bullet. The 7 WSM I believe has a .243” neck length, so the neck is .041” short of being “perfect”. 99.9999% of people would never shoot the difference. Where the WSM’s have their biggest issue is the throat area!
    The case in all aspects is perfect. 35 degree shoulder doesn’t allow the case body to act as a powder funnel, so most of the powder burns in the case. The .010” taper in the case body allows for a greater volume of powder and helps mitigate bolt thrust.
    It is a great cartridge overall.

    • @WillyK51
      @WillyK51 Před 10 dny +2

      The only issue I find with the WSM is they are chambered in a Short/Medium action. If you get a long action chambered in a 7WSM to seat out long bullets, you would have a 7PRC. If you check the 6.8W case dimentions it's even shorter than the WSM. A 7RM chambered in 3.8" Action is my choice. All are perfect with very minor performace diff. If you target shoot you can be picky, but for Hunting only minor diff👍👍

      I’m with you on the short/medium action thing, people get caught up in that and they forget there is 5/8” to 3/4” difference in bolt throw and the weight between a long and short action receiver is negligible.

      Never understood why the 7 wsm didnt take off. The 300 was popular due to its accuracy in long range benchrest type stuff. The 270 wsm is better for deer imo but the 7 is a great caliber and more versatile. Its abit too much case for long range accuracy competition but still can do very well.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry Před 3 dny

      @@orr89rocz I have a guess at why that is. People like me just didn't care for the design. Just like so many people loved the short action aspect for a slightly lighter wt rifle, people like me just didn't like the thought of case capacity being occupied by bullet instead of powder. I never subscribed to the short action craze at the time just to shave a nearly non-noticeable wt difference in a rifle. I did admire the reported "short and fat" is more accurate than long and skinny but I always liked power and speed and maximizing a cartridge utility. I fell like that was robbed by the short action magnums. Years later (2022/2023) I started looking hard at the PRC line up but even after the 300PRC was introduced I knew a 7PRC would follow so I waited. Very shortly after my first 7PRC I found a new Tikka T3x left hand 300WSM at a bargain on gun broker. I talked with my rifle builder and asked him if there was any reason we couldn't take a 300WSM and convert it to the PRC concept where a bullet seats long and I could just use a long action (Tikkas are all one length). He informed me he had already done it with this 300WSM using 190 grain bullets seated long. I bought that Tikka 300WSM
      I made a dummy round with a 210 Berger VLD, sent it to JGS, got a reamer made with 2 main objectives - 1. longer freebore, 2. Alex Wheeler modification to open the chamber up another 0.002 over SAAMI spec. Took that reamer and my Tikka 300WSM to my builder and he opened up the factory chamber, suggesting I do that before rebarreling since Tikka barrels are good anyway. Turned out to be a home run. I get a bit more powder in the case, more velocity, and all I needed for that Tikka was a Mountain Tactical long action bolt stop and a Tikka long action mag. Done.
      Next, I got a K&P 8 twist barrel and made a second 300WSM with that reamer using a Terminus Zeus QC action (long). As it turns out I didn't need an 8 twist barrel as I don't plan on going any heavier than 210 grains but you live and learn. I've been listening to all the hype on the need for faster twist barrels. I should have trusted my gut and just kept with a 10 twist. The slowest twist that will stabilize a bullet is almost always the most accurate and you don't sacrifice velocity, even if it is only a few fps.
      I now have a Brux barrel, 10 twist, 4 groove, #3 ready to also be chambered with that 300WSM reamer. I'm considering one more barrel also a 10 twist for a custom Tikka since I have more Tikka rifles on hand.

I think the Prc will definitely handle the heavier high bc bullets better but when it comes to hunting, a higher bc bullet isn't going to kill any better than one with lesser bc. Fyi: The factory stated box velocity for the 140 grain Winchester ballistic silvertip ammo is 3225 at the muzzle and 3233 ft. Ibs. of energy. With a 200 yard zero, drop is -5.6 @ 300 yards and -16.4 @ 400 yards according to the box. Bc of 0.485

      ha ha...naaa. Look at the history of both. No shortage of videos, articles, podcasts, etc. Universal consensus, the 7PRC global popularity has never been matched even in the wake of Hornady's major flop by not updating their ammo velocities once the Reloder 26 well ran dry. 7WSM never had anything in the realm of attention 7PRC has achieved. Please don't over-interpret my comment. I think 7WSM should have been one of the most popular cartridges in history. Just didn't happen

    Haven't you learned your lesson on what Hornady says the speed is? Great topic though.

    You won’t touch the 7prc with the heavies. The wsm line of cartridges was great with the lighter bullets but performance really suffered with the heavys, unless you were willing to single feed rounds you won’t come close to 7prc performance with the 180gr range of bullets

      It's the king of FLINCH AND MISS and SCOPE BITE except in the hand of a few shooters !!! LMFAO Most shooters shooting under 400 yds and most have no right shooting over 200 yds.. Watch the Backfire series where he challenges shooters ! Most can't handle the recoil they should be shooting 6.5 crd and limit there shots to 300 yds IMO Shot placement and bullet selection... except for Brown Bears .... Jack O Conner did it ALL with his 270 Win M 70
