      My favorite thing about that is how Nick is just screwing around and making things hard for her until he realizes that her job is dependent on this case. Until that scene in the rainforest, he has no idea that there's something at stake for her if she doesn't figure this out in time. Once he finds that out, that's when he really changes and starts genuinely helping her.

Would they benefit from having a cop her size to enter the rodent district? Absolutely. But she doesn’t have the experience needed to safely maneuver that area.

      The thing is, they don’t clarify WHY they did certain things. But I think the issue is that while they’re doing justified things, it’s colored by the prejudice. So when someone who is big would do the same thing she did, there would be lesser punishment. They also give her less chances to prove herself cuz of who she is, whereas someone else would have more. Basically a more subtle bias against her, both are wrong with Judy not being fully in the right, but neither r the police as a whole for making it harder to prove herself when others would have more of a chance to work their way up.

    • @TheKat12364
      @TheKat12364 Před 2 lety +7

      @@ma.2089 Also. Its the same thing as say the early 1900' s when only white men of certain religion and background would be allowed to be cops. China town and black community were policed by outsiders with no understanding of the area. That is what little rodentiata reminds me of. China town where not a single cop spoke the language..

    • @StoryMing
      @StoryMing Před rokem +6

      Granted, it probably is not the best idea to give a rookie the most difficult, dangerous jobs on their first day. But the problem is, Chief Bogo clearly had NO intentions of giving Judy the opportunity to gain experience and work her way up- say, under the guidance and supervision of an experienced senior partner. As far as he was concerned (at that time), meter maid was the position where she belonged, and where she would stay.
      -- Now compare and contrast that with Nick and Judy's first official assignment together as partners. They are commissioned to shut down a speeder. That is not an advanced-level task, while at the same time it IS still legitimate police work.

    Using animals as allegories for serious topics that would otherwise be too difficult for the general public to accept has always been a personal favorite of mine. It allows for a message to be conveyed without being too on the nose and allowing animators to get away with more things than they usually would if they used humans. It gives a greater purpose to making the characters in a film or story animals than just because "Oooh they're animals and fuzzy but... talking?? and walking like human??"
    By the by, you two should definitely react to "Legends of the the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole" or "Wolfwalkers". They're both great films with incredible animation that I wish would get more love and attention than they do. I know you'll enjoy watching them!

    I get that Judy was just a rookie and she was assigned a specific duty - but if she trained as a cop and was on the spot when a crime took place - she was doing her job and doing it well by chasing the robber. When you can prevent a crime from happening or catch the perpetrator in the act, time is of the essence and the last thing a cop should do in that situation is hang back because of internal bureaucracy.

    15:30 my little bro who is training fo be a cop when he watched this half year ago mentions that she doesn’t know “the beat” of that area. Meaning basically doesn’t know the ppl, where’s what, any info and so on. You send a rookie or a cop with no knowledge into that area can become a mess be they do something reckless, get easily manipulated or read “the mood” among ppl faces if need help or not.
    Example is San Francisco most known area is tenderloin district and it’s shady rep. There are other blocks where communities and what ppl do varies and depending which cop is there they need to read the area pretty much. Most cops start at meter jobs so that besides handing tickets out they examine the street and ppl to keep note on things.

    Great reaction lads, one of my favourite Disney movies in the last while and very well made commentary. Hopefully with this you’ll be willing to move onto the more mature version Beaststars. I’d love to see your reaction to that - I promise by the end you’ll be swooning and rooting for a Wolf, Bunny, Panda and Deer.
    Also one thing I notice in a lot of reactions is the throw back again the chief. In reality he’s literally doing his job and trying to tame down a literal rookie officer from being both overly zealous and jumpy.
    It’s good to remember that while you get all your training in the academy your actual training begins on the job in reality - it can teach you a lot but it can’t teach you how everything goes down irl.
    As such it’s very normal for junior officers who initially get assigned to a precinct to be given the worst and most boring and shit jobs possible (and by worst and shit I don’t mean dead bodies I mean sitting at a traffic stop taking speed readings on cars). It’s done so that:
    1. It tempers the officer into the actual job they are doing - this ain’t like the movies where it’s all action packed it’s actual cop work like Hot Fuzz showed with lots of boring sitting around and paper work.
    2. It’s to get the officer to slowly get to know the community and begin coming apart of it - remember not all Officer go into there local community’s but can like Judy be assigned to one’s outside of there local area. As such they have zero connection with the people there as such it’s always best to start them off slow and grow them into it.
    - take in this case Judy doing her monitor job. While she’s absolutely going zealous about it now, slowly you begin to learn the people about and those “yeah he’s 30 seconds over but it’s Damien and I know if he’s not moved from here it means he’s been held up in the shop. I’ll leave him a warning but ain’t going to fine him”
    Yes your not fining him as the law notes but you are giving a warning as is your ability to judge on the circumstance - if you know it’s a very very rare thing and you know why, you let that stuff slide. You see it in videos where cops catch younger drivers speeding on backroads and such and they know why and while they will give em a warning and send em home, they ain’t going to fine and arrest them (or if they do it’s a small fine easily paid off just there to give em a small freight and “hey watch out cause this is a ‘we’re letting you off’ one”.
    And it’s slowly over those first initial years of doing these small time jobs that they begin slowly introducing you into the bigger stuff.
    Yeah you may be a metermaid for 2 years, but if your doing your job well and your showing your connecting with the community and your precinct, say 3 months in they may start letting you take the day off meter’s assigning it to someone who had a rough week and they’ll let you jump in with another squaddie so they can start showing you the further ropes and again helping to tame and fix up those smaller parts about ya - you may be being to overly zealous getting to try and know a community who may be cautious of you but having a veteran of the community there to hold you back and remind you it’ll take a while for them to comfort up helps.

    I loved this movie! Love the art style and the animation is so good. All the characters were so likable, especially Judy and Nick. 10/10 performances.
    I do think as a metaphor for racism it’s pretty clumsy, and pretty quickly stops being any sort of useful critique the second they’re like “this group of animals definitely USED to be kill this other group because of their innate nature, but they don’t do it NOW so it’s cool”. Also the fact that the group that historically subjugated the other is now the one being discriminated against, when the opposite case would be a far better allegory to the real world.
    And then obviously it’s a pretty idealized and fantastical depiction of police officers, and pretty unrealistic that the police seem to be immune to the anti-predator prejudices (which is almost hilarious in a movie about racism). And the way that Judy endangers civilians and breaks the law when investigating and arresting people is painted as totally cool cuz she’s the protagonist.
    But really that’s my only gripe with it. And it’s basically exactly what you’d expect when a childrens/family film includes cops and racism. Gotta balance lightheartedness against being *too* real.
    I’ve seen this movie countless times (i worked in electronics at a supermarket/department store, and our display unit thing that played those store ads on the tv wall broke, so the manager just hooked up a blu-ray player and played the only two open-box movies we had on loop: Zootopia and Minions) and still enjoy it every time.
