I used to watch Kenny Everett every Saturday night for "Naughty Time"...with Hot Gossip. Such original dancing and so exciting. I read that Sarah Brightman was one of them. Arlene Phillips is a true genius.

30 or 40 years later and I really miss Kenny Everett’s style of chaotic psychedelic comedy! Heck I miss Kenny full stop. We never did bomb 💣 Russia 🇷🇺 like he said either.
It was never chaotic. Everything was subversive. Irony often gets lost in the media. Same as with music: when the kinks released “Lola” the only thing that was censored was the words coca-cola, and they totally missed the fact that he was singing about a transsexual. It’s a similar thing with Everett, if you ever see the clip with David Bowie you’ll get what I mean.

@@garryhastings3383 I’m 51. I went to central saint Martin’s college in London (look it up) one of my lecturers used to be a dancer in hot gossip. All the Male dancers were gay, and the whole “sexy” thing was never about “being” sexy. It was meant to be a parody, and it intentionally pushed the boundaries of what you could get away with on mainstream TV. I don’t know what makes you say I “obviously wasn’t around…” you don’t know me, and you never will. You seem like someone who lives in a provincial village, and you come across like a little Britain character. In short: they were taking the p*ss

I was 8 in 1978 and wasn't really allowed to watch this (although somewhat ironically my dad didn't mind me watching the Benny Hill show). I was only ever allowed to watch this show if my teenage brother was babysitting me and my parents were out. Good old Kenny Everett, a really subversive entertainer and brilliant DJ. In an era of Little & Large, Cannon & Ball and other mainstream fodder, he was a breath of fresh air and that's why he's so fondly remembered by the generation who are now well into middle age.🤓

Am I the only one who thinks it's really ironic that Arlene Phillips ran with and had great success with a group of mixed race/sex dancers? After all the amazing Flick Colby conceived Ruby Flipper for Top Of The Pops two years before. Shame the BBC was so behind the times and killed the troupe before they really had a chance.

Swings and roundabouts.Magpie was the naughty cousin of BBC's Blue Peter but ITV rejected Grange Hill and that went to the BBC.Till this day I'm amazed how controversial Grange Hill was even though it was a BBC programme.(For all of you who are wondering how I got from Hot Gossip to Grange Hill I have had a couple of ciders in this hot weather).
I would have been about 14 when this and Benny Hill's Angels were on telly and I'd pray to God my dad would come home from work after it'd finished cos we were really hard up then and being Asian and caught watching this guaranteed getting proper tortured to a pulp. It was hard then in the house and outside.
