Seemingly every summer we see some of Europe’s biggest clubs flying down to sunny Portugal to spend large sums of money on talented footballers full of potential. There’s not a single Benfica, Porto or Sporting match where scouts from renown Champions League-aiming teams aren’t present. But why did this relatively minor league gather such a pivotal role in the international transfer market?

@@brunoalves-pg9eo That's an incredibly narrow view, and a very unfair point to tell to someone who doesn't know the league. Games between the 4 biggest teams and the others might generally fall into that category. Some more, some less. Some way too much. That is bound to happen when budget differences are high. Games between those 4 teams are regularly fairly entertaining and have a huge emotional side. Games between the other teams vary a lot, some are great, some are average, some are bad. Like in any other leagues.
It's definitely one the best leagues outside the top 5.

@@rubensousa9216 Oh, but I think it's the best league outside the big 5, but compared to those, the gap is very big. When we talk abut the top 5 leagues though, we should say the top 4. France is just an averae league with a top tier team. The difference to the portuuese league is that France is a very big countr and has a very big market for viewers, investing in Portugal would not be wise to these big sharks because few people watch the league.
That could change if we had big teams, but we would need teams at the level of PSG and I dont see that happening an time soon.

You also have to take into account contractual obligations. A star player likely has a shrewd agent behind him. You can't keep burgeoning talents without them demanding better terms and wages. If the club agrees, expenditures increase and you risk a domino effect. If the club tries to play hardball, you could end up with a situation like Lewandowski, Goretzka and Gelson Martins recently.
Not to say that the pre-Bosman era was better.

Ligue 1 actually has pretty good youth development. The fact is EPL sides and even in some cases a team like Real Madrid or Bayern Munich will buy a player there after there breakout year rather then skepticism and letting the player perform another year at the club. Players like Martial, Mendy, Mbappe (to PSG IK but still to a major side), Silva, and more not to mention Lemar almost left after one season (the deal to Arsenal broke down). Look at Vincent K. (Can’t spell this) he looks like a midfielder for the future but Koln will probably be the club taking the praise rather then Nice.

This on the other hand produces another problem - a glass ceeling between these three clubs and the remaining Portuguese clubs. Since the formation of the current Primeira Liga in 1999 on only one occasion a team other than Sporting, Benfica or Porto has won the domestic league title - Boavista - but that was 17(!) years ago. Three other teams have finished in top 3 since '99 - Vitória de Guimarães in 2007-08 season, Paços de Ferreira in 2012-13 and Braga twice (2009-10 and 2011-12). If you search for champion outside of Lisbon and Porto, tough luck - there is none. The closest was in 2011-12 with Braga.
And there is more to it in the transfer policy and it's more darker than you think - like any big domestic club, the Big Three uses at some times bullying tactics to steal players from smaller clubs or in the case of South American players they outbid the competition in the 11th hour (say for example young Brazilian talent who was certain at Braga was scooped by Benfica in the last minute). So don't think that the Big Three in Portuguese football is some kind of magical factory or paradise for young talents that become big stars in Europe.

Looking at Andre Pereira and Oliver Torres from porto to be next prospects for my club. Benfica has got Krovinovic, Diogo Goncalves, Rafael Leao(if he actually is there officially), Zivkovic; Pizzi but they lost Jonas yesterday to Al-Hilal for 5M€. And sporting are basically limping omafter being shot on both legs by the situation of president Bruno de Carvalho falling out with the sporting squad after a riot by the SCP ultras (Juve Leo) over at their academy in Alcochete just days before the portuguese cup final and also due to the massive spent (more than SLB and FCP combined) leaving the club unstable financial wise over his 5 year tenner in control of sporting.

for me thmost important point is the quality of the middle table managers, they know how to apply defensive style and playing on the counter. They just fail on Europa League because their budget its like a league one club and after qualifying they usually have to sell 3 to 4 players to make a profit and that breaks the squad for the season.

I wonder why in some European leagues (e.g. La Liga); some clubs have "B" sides in the lower tiers but other leagues (e.g. EPL) don't have such a thing.
James Rodriguez, Falcao and Jackson Martinez are some Colombians who went through Porto's revolving door in recent years. I noticed all top Portuguese sides have had a very high turnover of personnel this summer, I suppose this is just their transfer policy as selling clubs. Who do you think will be the next big transfers to leave the Portuguese Liga for over €20 million. I'm going with Ruben Dias, Grimaldo and Danilo Perreira.

Apart from the more open play thing, you did not really explain why other second tier leagues have not been able to raise the profits. As the reliability also applies to them. One of the main things are for instance the much better wages in Portugal as compared to say the Netherlands so they can keep their players if a very high bid is not made.

Robben was the last world class Dutch player and he didnt have much else to help for the nt. Same can be said for Italy which is an even bigger mystery. Then again Brasil hasnt been the same for 12 years so maybe it's just a cycle. Though of all nations of expect a country the size of brasil with all of those people and talent to be better than they have been. It seems like with all the video and scouting now Brasil has trouble because teams are set up to stop them and catch them out of position as they have always been undisciplined tactically

The big Portuguese teams get great talent at a lower price from smaller leagues and teams, then forms them, garners interests, then resells them to big leagues for higher price and profits well. Look at talents that came from Benfica alone in recent years. Ederson, Oblak, David Luiz, Lindelof, Matic, Di Maria, Nelson Semedo, to name a few. Plus teams like Benfica have great developmental program, and sells many quality players like Benfica formed Bernardo Silva, in this case to Premier League's Manchester City, but also to all other top leagues in the world. Then you also have quality coaching in other leagues, bringing in Portuguese players, like in Wolverhampton.

Portugal and Holland are the biggest selling countries for a reason. The dutch league produces left-footed orthdodox players at the same rate Portugal produces right-footed its uncanny. The build up play in Portugal is a tight, predictable clockwork that is difficult to disturb and magnanimously efficient in the final third. Holland demonstrates as a big broken-in catchers mit - precise in possession and loose in first touch-equipped to dominate possession with little anxiety biding their time till a goal is produced from left-footed scheming...

I think Ligue 1 is a better developping league, due to club’s politics like Lyon or Monaco. Lyon is mostly owns by President fan of his club but lacking big money. The Club have own of the best formation center in Europe (Benzema, Ben Arfa, Fekir, Lloris, Umtiti, Ndombele, Lacazette, Pjanic and etc) and they sell them for profit. Then Monaco who developed youngsters and sell them because it is their only way to be financially valuable (small stadium). But those club along with Ste and Marseille are taking players from smaller teams forming an ascension. From a small french club to a top 4 one, then to one from a Top 4 league

@@oldmanhogan2668 Sporting hasn't had the best academy in Portugal in years. Most of the national team's backbone that was formed at Sporting's academy is either retired or nearing the end of their careers. As far as I can see the best talents have mostly come from Benfica and Porto, Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Nélson Semedo, Gonçalo Guedes, Rúben Neves, Jota, Dallot and future talents like Rúben Dias or João Félix. And I'm not even accounting for all the Portuguese promises that flopped like Renato Sanches, André Gomes, André Silva, Ivan Cavaleiro; I know sporting had a couple players like João Mário or Cédric breaking thru, but even then, saying Sporting has the best academy is laughable.

You didn't mention that La Liga doesn't allow more than 3 non-EU players in each team. That's why paulinho was loaned back to china after arthur was brought in. That's why barcelona put yerry mina at the top of their transfer list, and now that so many premier league clubs are interested in him, they quickly stole arturo vidal since he was not an option previously as he does not have an EU passport. Coutinho is currently in the process of getting an EU passport through his wife, who is an official Portuguese citizen.
There have only been 10 colombian players in La Liga... ever. That statistic says a lot about the rules.

E_M_E_T hmm fake news... so you’re telling me that Barca doesn’t have vidal, Messi, Suarez, Arthur, Coutinho, Malcom, Murillo, rafinha and boateng on their squad?? I mean, they are all non-EU players, or Real Madrid: navas, Marcelo, Vinicius, Mariano and casemiro?? Or atlético: godin, árias, Thomas, Giménez, Filipe Luís and savic?? Or Valencia: cheryshev, lee, garay, neto...

@@David-qq9bk I know I'm late to the party, but.....many of the players you mention have EU passports. Messi has a Spanish passport, Suarez has an Italian passport, Navas has a Spanish passport, as does Mariano, as does Marcelo....
Just because their primary nationality is a non-EU one it doesn't mean that they don't have second nationalities (usually by residing in a European country for a number of years, or through a parent/grandparent).

@@swapnildpawar22 Dude, United paid 55 millions for one of the best playmaker in Europe, do you think that's a lot? To put things in perspective, Renato Sanches costed more when Bayern Munchen sign him a couple years ago. Bruno Fernandes was a bargain, and he was sold so cheap because Sporting Lisbon is pretty much broke. The thing with that transfer was our president trying to get a more acceptable amount for one of the best midfielders in the game.
