- On 6th April 1941, Flying Officer Campbell V.C. spotted and attacked the German battleship Gneisenau over Brest Harbour, France. He flew his Beaufort torpedo bomber through a gauntlet of concentrated anti-aircraft fire from about 1000 weapons of all calibres. He launched a torpedo at a height of 50 feet (15 m) with absolute precision. That Campbell launched his torpedo accurately is a testament to his courage and determination. The ship was severely damaged below the waterline and obliged to return to the dock, where she had come only the day before; she was put out of action for six months, lessening the threat to Allied shipping crossing the Atlantic.
Immediately following the attack, the aircraft met a withering wall of flak and crashed into the harbour. The Germans buried Campbell and his three crew mates with full military honours. His courage was only recognised when the French Resistance managed to pass along news of his brave deeds to Britain.
His award of the V.C. was made posthumously in 1942. - Zábava
You cannot imagine the courage required to press home such an attack. In so doing, he gave up the next 60 years of life he and his crew mates could have had. True sacrifice.
And doing so saved so many .,.It would be so nice for all of us to get along on this planet

@@franklievens376 We are all different...In my opinion the wars are very wrong ..Was in one and it felt strange and was strange ...I was there to save and to balance...I saw fear but I had no fear and all felt as if I was the spectator and not someone involved and on the first line ...As I've said we are all different ...It could be that there is a problem in a diet ..Eating bodies of warm blooded animals that were slaughtered in the slaughter house hmmm...sooo much poor animals adrenaline is inside that lamb or that chop or stake man ...That and upbringing ...I truly believe that wars will stop after some massive disaster makes us all more aware of the surroundings and each other in that respect
My very old RAF pilot neighbor told me of being told "Gentlemen, press on regardless." before each mission.😢
Foolish, for what?
An idea of how to spende your life in future?
"His courage was only recognized"? The Germans recognized his courage and gave him and his crewmates the respect they were due.
Well said and well put, Dan!
I've said it before and was told i was wrong. The Germans respected a soldier that fought bravely and honorably.
23 year old with pure courage, guts, and determination. 🇬🇧
23 years today, entitled

Don't think all Germans were like the SS. The average soldier, sailer and pilot admired bravery.
My Grandfather was in the Royal Navy. His ship was attacked and the guns were knocked out . The German Captain gave them 20 minutes to get off board before he sunk them.
Imagine all the lives he saved by putting that battleship out of action for 6 months.
6 months dry dock means the boat was near sunk...that is a long time in Wartime drydock !
And the crew was buried with full military honours by the Germans... 😮
during the Cambeltown raid a german ships captain search out the british CO and told him about the actions of one man, and said to the CO he deserves the VC. he was awarded the VC
It frequently happened...
Courage and determination? Not maybe possibly some … I mean … skill?
Thank you for your service Sir
That attack threw a wrench into the upcoming Operation Rheinübung. Gneisenau was unable to sortie to support Bismark and Prinz Eugene, as planned.
23 years old, I'm lost for words.
The Germans were very respectful as well.
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
R.I.P BRAVE SOUL'S
Brave sad amazing
A generation of true heroes willing to sacrifice all to fight evil, who should always be remembered.
That was a real fearless crew of men who vowed to protect their countrymen. Sorry Germany. At least you got a r and r for 6 months if you weren't in the infirmary first
Incredible
Despite the video using AI generated pictures, I just did my research and... I think it's the first time I see someone telling the truth in here
(His complete name is Kenneth Campbell, for those who didn't find by just searching Ken)
The German military regarded airmen, regardless of nationality as knights of the air
A torpedo damaged the ship "below the waterline:"? Wow!!!
It is possible that he saved my father’s life. My dad was on one of those English ships going between Scotland and New York and or Canada during that time.
Bravery is not the absence of fear, its what you do in spite of.
The Greatest Generation !!
May God Bless and Keep Them Always 🙏
Thank you Sir and your crew for your service
Greatest Generation from another Allied Country.
This was before the US was in the war, so before the US were allies
Hit it with something 50 times more powerful?
Also mentioned in the book "das boot"

FLYING OFFICER?????
BWAAHAAAHAAA.
you get it right???
Not a battleship a heavy cruiser
She was a battlecruiser. They were the same size as a battleship with similar weapons but were lightly armored so they could steam as fast as a cruiser.
@@gordonbergslien30 But was planned as battleship, just didn't receive her 38 cm guns in time.
Mr. Bean is that you?
He looks like Mr Bean
how did buddy see where to aim
What about his crew?
The "G" is silent. FYI.
😮👍👍👍
There is a number of things about your video that disgusts me. I am not talking about the bravery of P/O Campbell and his crew, they were amazing. What I am disgusted with is your use of incorrect pictures. You should a pilot but using modern flight gear and your depiction of P/O Campbells plane is totally incorrect.
You aren`t talking about a number; you are referring to ONE AI pic I used. I agree; the clothing wasn`t period authentic because AI is notoriously difficult to get the EXACT image you need. But the human is `period authentic`, and so is his mood. I am actually disgusted by your disgusting comment and your disgusting grammar!
@@HauntedEarth No, I refer to two pictures you used. The bomber picture is of an American bomber, probably a B-25 and not the Beaufort torpedo plane. It would seem that you didn't check or didn't care enough to correct. Using and blaming the mistake on AI doesn't absolve your negligence. The mistakes make your video look amateurish. Also, where did you get the information on the "1,000 guns"? While I am not saying there weren't that many, I have yet to find any info on the total number.
ARNF VALOUR
G-nize-en-ow ! Is this American creator ? None of you can pronounce European names
Mr. Bean's dad was a very brave man.
The aircraft was a Bristol Beaufighter, not a Beaufort.
Why not check the internet and archival resources before making this incorrect statement?
AI is ridiculous.
Typical Jock.........😊...❤
Today's 23 year Olds don't know if they're male or female, or what bathroom to use!
I thought he is rowan atkinson
What a sacrifice. May God comfort their families, in Jesus's mighty Name.
A gauntlet is a metal glove! How the hell did that pilot fly through a gauntlet of anything.
AI pictures of random Aircraft lowers the status of a VC winner. Clean up your act
You talk Beaufort, but show Blenheim.
Who is writing this garbage for you?
