Great reaction!!! So fun to see someone get to experience this band. That is probably the quintessential Phish song; it’s got intense composition, funk/jazz breakdowns, absurd/nonsense/funny lyrics, and an extended improv outro (and wait until you hear the live version). It’s the most-played Phish song in their repertoire.

The first time I "got" Phish was early college, hanging at a friends house. At the time, I was really listening to lots of jazz, Frank Zappa, Rush, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones and Dave Matthews Band - so I was pretty much primed for the Phish experience. Anyways, while hanging at a friends, mid-afternoon, I was dozing off on the couch while Phish's "A Live One" played through the stereo. I was digging it, but then YEM started, with those beautiful arpeggios and into full compositional awesomeness. That's when I realized, "oh these guys don't 'just' jam, there's some serious composition here." 20 years later, I listen to a wide and seemingly endless variety of music, but find myself still going back to Phish at least a few times a week, catching an old show, a version of a song I've never heard, a groove that wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the 20 minute jam leading up to it, etc. For sure, I am forever grateful for that random moment napping on the couch back in college. I was a freshman at UVM in the late 80s. I wasn't into them yet, but they were still playing the dorms and house parties. I met my first Phan in 1987. I started with cassettes in '90 and saw my first show at Stowe VT in '91. My last show was Halloween 2014 Vegas. I've seen some things. :-)
My first show was at Barre VT, not Stowe.
I'll never forget where I was the first time I heard my favorite piece of music.
In the beginning the keys are in the background sounding kinda like circus music, but that's a guitar....going up and down arpeggios.

I know this is sacrilege but I prefer the studio version of YEM over most live versions. It’s just so well composed. .

YEM is a lot of people's favorite. Live it always gets the extra-special light show.
Teez it's awesome this music has grabbed you this way. It's lost on a lot of people. If we ever get to go back....GO SEE THEM LIVE. One of the most fun things in life, and it'll change you for the better.
