  • On top of the recalls on Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added recalls on granola bars and cereal from the Quaker Oats company due to fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Mexico’s Health Department on Friday ordered the temporary closure of a melon-packing plant implicated in salmonella infections that killed five people in Canada and three in the United States.
"Salmonella is a very common type of bacteria, but there are many different strains," says Joseph McPhee, a biomedical sciences professor at the Toronto Metropolitan University.
This most recent (cantaloupe) outbreak is caused by an unusual strain of salmonella and we actually don’t know much about how it causes disease.”

A family member bought some pre cut and packaged cantaloupe recently. The entire family developed salmonella. It was reported to the appropriate authorities. All recovered now and won’t buy pre cut fruit again!

Or maybe its the food processing facilities handling more than just one type of food. Process 1T of meat one week. Then process 1T of fruit the next. Cross contamination is bound to happen with this style of practice.

Samonella is also carried by different kinds of molds. Most of the fruit I get ends up needing to be thrown out within a few days. Its pretty obvious that ita worse than it has been before.

Uh, so they get paid millions to research and understand these things, and he says "we don't understand where this came from?"
And how does it transfer from a wet type of foodstuff to a dried product?
You have to wonder what is involved in the process that is causing this?
Is it the prep areas, the areas it is harvested or is it where it is stored before and after being cut?
If this is more likely after being cut, is it by hand or machine?
Machines can be cleaned and double checked, hands are a bit different, especially if you have someone maliciously doing this to harm others?
Very strange for this outbreak to transfer to oatmeal(I think I heard them right) or oat products?
Looks like they will need to make some adjustments to how these products are made and sold.

He didn't say that silly. He said it probably got on the fruit or vegetables through runoff containing animal feces on the farms.

    • @andrewvarcoe4741
      @andrewvarcoe4741 Před 5 měsíci +5

@@bobwoods1302 I rewatched, the statement he gives at the very beginning, he answers her question with we don't really know, then goes on to explain more details about what salmonella is and such.
The question came after the interviewer mentioned the recall on cereals and granola bars, he doesn't answer her question entirely.
No anger here, just giving info on what made me wonder: when someone tells me they do not understand how something they have researched and studied, for some length, was transferred to items you would not expect to be in close proximity I wonder how or why, I assume They store dry goods separate from fruit, fruit is usually refrigerated or something, also the types and methods of making the product are different as well.
If the sites for production were clean and seperate then that means something is happening during transit or shipping.
This could also be caused by people either on purpose or by accident, the answer he gives actually makes me wonder if it was on purpose, being so hard to find out when there is no reason to hide anything, means someone may be hiding details from this person as well or they are missing a crucial detail or step. Sorry for the long reply, lol I like talking and sharing information.

So basically, we buy imported produce from countries with minimal regulations who have irrigated the produce we're buying with livestock piss water. And you're trying to get me to believe that a little rinse in cold water is going to make it all better? Salmonella dies when exposed for 10 minutes to temperatures that our skin cannot handle. We need better oversight if we're going to continue to import food.

Food for thought. You see the video of people in huge fields. Who are those workers? Are they local people, with local germs our bodies are used to? Or are they migrant workers; which I fully agree we are in big hurts without. Are they even legal or sneeked in under the table? They work long grueling hours for pitiful pay. Back to the horizon to horizon big fields in many cases. Run this conversation over in you head and see how it sounds to you...Hey, Bill. I need to go to the bathroom. You and Joe'; on his other side; 'pick my row, too, until I get back'...Really? You really think this is happening? No. Most likely isn't. Common courtesy between the workers keeps them facing forward to allow their friend the few moments privacy to do his business. He hurries to catch up and jumps back in line picking his row of cantaloupes, etc. Pee, poop and the leaf he used is right where he left it. And yes I know facilities are supposed to be made available to all the crews; sorry, not always happening. I always wash everything even remotely washable that get from the store. That strain of salmonella might not be too dangerous where it started, but by the time it gets to me, it could have became very different.

💯 Pathetic that news channels try to be vague to confuse people. Creating demand for animal products causes more supply, more pollution and fecal runoffs into ponds and lakes, more infections, more bacterial resistant strains; the list goes on.
