It's not Nicole's fault, they should put whether a meal is vegetarian on the menu itself
Yeah, usually places put like a leaf or something next to vegetarian or vegan options
Oh yeah its not her fault for not knowing how the chefs prepare the meals. Alternatively it is her fault for not knowing how the chefs prepare the meals in an age were seemingly everyone is vegan or vegetarian. Me I was a cook many years ago and answered every question the wait staffed asked because it was my job to know whats being presented. Just like it was their job to know whats in the customers meal. The reason we didn't tell the customers what's in the meal was because that was the wait staff job when the customers asked how's the meal prepared. If they didn't know they would ask us and get back to the customer instead of guessing what's in the meal.
@@joeclaridyyes, but if every other person seems to be vegetarian wouldn't it be easier just to mark the vegetarian options in the menu? But also yes waiters job is also being ready to answer the customers questions
Every restaurant needs a Nicole. Yeah, she can be a pain, but she most likely knows the job better than anyone + all the tricks in the book.
Yeah, I always appreciate the places that mark which items are vegetarian and vegan. (Especially the places that differentiate between them since I’m not vegan).
But I also know that risotto almost always has chicken broth and/or cheese in it and I wouldn’t order it unless the menu specified “vegetarian”.
Kinda surprised at how many people don’t understand chicken stock is meat. No vegetarian would consume it.
They would if Nicole is their server.

Some vegetarians might - no-one is perfect, you can be an imperfect vegetarian, you might make an effort to eat vegetarian but still end up eating something not quite vegetarian once a day, once a week or once a year. But it shouldn't ever be sold as a vegetarian food. Just like a religious Jew or Muslim might eat pork or shellfish some time despite considering it sinful. When I was young I was a vegetarian who ate fish fingers at my grandparent's house.
Nicole let us down here. I was soooo hoping for something like "Actually Terry, the cooks switched to a garden vegetable broth last year" lol
Because "knowing the menu" is a nonsense ask, nobody can or should need to memorize all that nonsense

@@aff77141yeah. I worked at Maccas, and someone asked me what kind of oil we use for fries. I told them what I know about it, but said there best bet is to Google it since they know as well as I do. Likewise, someone else asked for a hamburger patty without pepper, but they come frozen with pepper already inside the mix. Most allergy info should be on the menu, or accompanying nutritional document. The location partially specializes in meat, so anyone who can’t eat meat should go somewhere else to avoid potential cross contact.
I’m speced into FoH, so I can’t say much about the preparation, aside from what I know. I can logic out how the customer should likely proceed, as well as explain why things are the way they are
@@aff77141 It's one of the few things you need to know to serve properly. If you are a salesperson, working on commission (which is functionally how tipped wages work in the US) you need to know what you are selling.

100% This is why you need symbols on your menu! As a server and former kitchen assistant, I tried to get the owner to put symbols on the menu. He wouldn't.
Becuz they use whatever is cheapest so can’t guarantee it’s not chicken stock lol

@@YeshuaKingMessiah I'm fully aware having worked in a restaurant. Usually if they use chicken stock they will continue with it because it can change the flavor of the dish.
In the EU, they have a standardized list of 14 allergens which are all identified on the menu. So without asking, I could tell that a menu item contained shellfish and dairy, for example. As someone with dietary restrictions, it was really great

Nico probably makes more of the menu than Joey does. I spent more time as a line cook coming up with specials and ways to sell the shit we didn't order but got anyway.

@@pattifrye438 That hurts, at the very least a mediocre server has the potential to turn into a good one. The cook we just lost was honestly kinda lazy but she had at least had a good vibe about her, I really liked having her on the line, she just held us back during closing. The two that we’re about to lose on the other hand, those are gonna hurt. And one of them is my roommate haha

Risotto has cheese in it. She is 100% wrong. Unless cheese is ok... idk the difference between vegan and vegetarian.

Parmigiano Reggiano is made with animal rennet so it is not vegetarian. Outside the EU, parmesan isn't a regulated name so it can be vegetarian, but it depends on the production process.
I haven't waited tables in 20 years, but each video makes me feel like I'm just on a quick smoke break, Drew. I didn't even smoke. I had to pretend to just to get breaks. 🤣

I have never seen one person portray so many different characters so effectively. Seems to be popular on YT these days, but you are by far the best at it!
There are only a couple others even worth noting, like Kris who does the Russian woman and tiny-hands kid, and Adrian Bliss. I love and adore Matt Mitchell, but his "characters" are different retail places. Agreed that Drew is the best by far!

I've had waitresses that have several months of experience that will order breakfast with eggs, and not know how the customer wants them prepared. Same thing with steak. I'll ask, "hey, how do they want that cooked?" I get the blank stare, deer in headlights look for 5 seconds, and they'll pull out a random answer. I'll look sternly at them "Are you guessing, or did they actually tell you that?" They assure me it's right, then bring the plate back to me 5 minutes later saying it's wrong.

0:54 I felt that eye roll in my soul. But also, if i ever have questions on menu items, I always go to the managers, rarely the cooks - it's just way easier and, of they don't know, they can easily find an answer.

Pffft I was a line cook/hourly manager for over a year at my restaurant before I moved to being a server and still didn't know all the details. I don't know why restaurants expect the servers to know all the details if even the ones making the food don't know it.
Because servers are the first line of defence against lawsuits if a customer says hey this got x in it I'm allergic and the server says no and it does guess who's getting sued
this really should be a show. Your writing is as good as parks and rec and the office.

It's not true, afaik a journalist made it up to see if people would repeat it.
This is why I'm terrified to eat out any more. I am deathly allergic to mammal meat and most mammal bi-products now and the amount of places that use stock or bacon or fat to flavor things is terrifying. I've had so many reactions because I forgot to check things that I never would have expected to have mammal products in them did.
I feel for people like you, but on the other hand, I hate people like you (and I'm so sorry for it). I own a restaurant, and we have a regular that has allergies to certain foods. They will demand that when they order the kitchen must stop all production, thoroughly clean the grill, and make their food with clean utensils. Sometimes I humor them if they come in on a slow afternoon. When they come in at 12 on a Sunday, I refuse their order and they get pissy. I can ill afford to shut down my kitchen for 10 minutes to serve one person when we are at capacity. Once they wanted french fries, but only in oil that has never had meat in it... Then asked why we couldn't just change the oil. I told them that changing the oil in a single frier takes almost $60 of oil, and they just gave me a "yeah, so?" response.

These days I'm thankful to see on menus what's in the dish ingredients-wise but also this is to minimise lawful action taken against the restaurant because at least they can say the patron should have read the ingredients of the dish which is clearly stated or if vision impaired had assistance from either a companion or make it clear to server that they are vision impaired and so they can read out the dish and ingredients. I've read out the menu to a visually challenged person before and it was no big deal to do so and explain how spicy or sweet a dish could be. Took me away from cleaning out the walk-in fridge so I was more than happy to help out and make a friend in the process😂

Yeah although it's still patchy in the UK and it's not unusual for me as a vegan to spot vegan / vegetarian marks that don't make sense on menus in the UK - e.g. something with cheese marked as vegan with no reason to think it's a fake cheese. Or green salads and chips not marked as vegetarian when they are because someone apparently got bored and gave up half way through marking the vegetarian items on the menu.

Hits home. Boss will change our ingredient supply on a whim. I adjust menu, send a list of ingredient changes to front staff. Go to tour the front of house and sure enough, they've thrown away all the changes and listed the defaults.

This is one of the few “skit” channels like this that I actually see the characters as individuals vs Drew playing different characters. Now I know why those little symbols are needed in the menus: it doesn't just help the customers outs, it helps the staff too (contains peanuts, spicy, vegetarian, vegan, etc.) 💡🙂

This was a third of the managers job none of the servers had any clue and would never be able to answer any question a customer had without asking the manager for the answers
