HP Stream 13 hard drive upgrade

  • This video is to demonstrate how to install a SSD hard disk on to the HP stream 13 laptop
    HP Stream 13 have only 32GB internal HD, and it is really less to operate windows 10... it is hard to install application on the machine and also hard to perform windows update..
    The 32GB internal hard disk is fixed in the motherboard, and it can't be upgrade...There is no spare slot for addtional hard disk installation too.
    The only way is to make use of the mPCI slot which is using for the internal WIFI adapter of the laptop, and install a new SSD by using a mPCI to mSATA adapter...

    *Update: it IS possible to install and boot to operating systems on an NVMe drive on an HP Stream 13 laptop! See some of my later comments on this thread for the solution that worked for me.*
    Great video, brother! Easily one of the most helpful that I've seen on CZcams -- this video has far more simplicity and than videos from other channels with thousands of subscribers.
    I followed along and managed to swap an SSD (with an adapter) into the wifi card slot also.
    Although it's given me 256gb of extra storage, the bad news is that I cannot use it as a boot drive.
    My wifi card slot on my HP Stream 13 didn't have a mPCIE connector... It had a M.2 connector (with A+E key). So I've had to use an NVMe SSD instead of an mSATA SSD.
    It seems like NVMe cannot be used for booting in the same way that SD cards can't be used for booting on HP Stream 13 laptops 😓

      @alexlam4410  Před rokem +2

      Did you enter the Bios to change the boot option to "legacy support"?

    • @ThisIsHolyJJ
      @ThisIsHolyJJ Před rokem +1

      @@alexlam4410 I tried everything, brother.
      Secure boot off, secure boot on. Legacy support off, legacy support on... But none of them worked in getting the efi/system partition on the new drive to be recognised.
      I've installed Linux on the old 32gb drive instead, because 32gb isn't enough for Windows. Funnily enough, the grub bootloader for Linux does show entries in its boot menu for my Windows install and other Linux installs on the new NVMe drive, but unfortunately when I try to click/enter any of them I get errors saying that the device doesn't exist.
      That's why I think NVMe drives are like microSD drives for this type of laptop in the sense that there is no native ability to boot to them.

    • @ThisIsHolyJJ
      @ThisIsHolyJJ Před rokem +5

      UPDATE: Turns out that it *IS* possible to boot to an OS on an NVMe drive installed on an HP Stream 13 😃
      Although it is still the case that HP's shoddy UEFI doesn't recognise NVMe drives during boot time, there is a simple solution to bypass this problem: install the *rEFInd* bootloader (technically a boot manager) along with its *NvmExpressDxe-64.efi* driver.
      There is no need to enable legacy mode support when using this method.
      Thank you Alex, because the combination of this video and rEFInd has allowed me to make my laptop highly usable (the best its been since I got it in 2016!) where as before I was considering sending it to trash!

    if your hard drive isn’t broken, you can upgrade the storage in a pretty seamless way by using the micro sd slot. they sell micro sd cards now that are like 10x the native storage on the stream and they insert flush into the slot so its set it and forget it with no reduction in form factor. ofc thats only if the native drive isn’t broken

      Your concern about best performance is pointless. It's a cheap laptop and I'm pretty sure the WIFI card slot is sharing PCIe bandwidth with the USB card anyway.

    • @ThisIsHolyJJ
      @ThisIsHolyJJ Před rokem +2

      Hi Veronica.
      It depends entirely on your HP Stream 13 model, because there are actually a lot of different types. You are basically limited to what connector your WiFi card slot your laptop's model has.
      Mine is an HP Stream 13 with model number 13-c100na.
      As you can see in Alex's video, his model has a wifi card which had an mPCIe connector. In his case, it would not be possible to install an m.2 drive because mPCIe to M.2 (with M key) adapters are not available.
      My HP Stream model has an M.2 connector (with A+E key) for the WiFi card... And so I was able to get an adapter for an M.2 drive with an M key. So that's why I would not have been able to install an mSATA drive even if I wanted to.
      However, you won't get full M.2 read and write speeds because the laptop's technology is too old.
      The mSATA and M.2 speeds on HP Stream 13s would have very little, if any, difference. I'd say just install whatever your laptop model allows you to.
      I hope that helps 👍
