Thank you for this vid. I had the exact same situation with a 14" HP NOTEBOOK am052nr. I had windows 10 installed already on a usb stick, this vid was the final steps. Now my 8 year old had a laptop for her light school work during this Coronavirus outbreak. Thank you so much! Hello from Washington state!
I have been using thee UEFI way to install win. 10 on these "HP "pieces of work" Streams...I am so glad you showed this...I kept getting approx. (mb) of space left when I did it that way...After doing IT for 30+ years ...I have always said; "I never claim to know it all" I am still glad there are others, like yourself, out there that we can still learn from...Thank you so very much...take care...God bless...
This helped. HP Stream is perhaps the worse laptop out there. Cheap quality, cheap price. Will never buy from HP again, but rebooting the entire operating system definitely helped. My little brother is now happy.
Thanks Mark. Although I know how to install Windows 10 from bootable USB Media, I couldn't figure out how to get this little HP to boot from the USB drive. Your tutorial works great. The kids next door will be pleased to have it working again!
Incredibly important steps that weren't mentioned: 2:21 When using the Legacy boot order, you must select "USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk" under the Legacy Boot Order menu, then press F6 until it is at the top of the boot order. If you forget this step, the clean installation may not install. 6:40 After the files are finished the computer will restart. It is vital that you press ESC during the restart, go the the Boot Menu like before, go to the Legacy Boot Order menu, select "USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk" and press F5 so that the "Notebook Hard Drive" is back on the top of the Legacy Boot Order menu. Then press F10, save, and you're good to go from there. If you forget this step, you may find yourself in an infinite boot loop.
@@felipeperez6385 You might not be entering the boot menu fast enough. As soon as you press the power-on button, start hitting ESC quickly and repeatedly, not holding it down. Thank you so much! I tried to factory reset my HP Stream due to memory issues, and it deleted the entire system and I could not reinstall it. Recovery drive did not work, trying to reinstall windows the normal way did not work. But this seems to have fixed it! It's just installing now. Thank you!! Been trying to fix my old laptop for 2 years haha.
Great help here, this device was a blister to figure out. The owner had deleted a bunch of windows registry files thinking it would clear up space. I opted to reload windows since chkdsk and reloading previous version seemed to help very little. When I restarted, I got the HP bug "enter administrator or sign on password" for bios and had to go through many other steps to resolve all of it. Even loading a fresh install of windows wasn't straightforward. all that to say thank you. This helped.
Bless you! I have sold my laptop and was trying to factory reset, kept saying no bootable device after i reset from BIOS, I have spent 5 days trying to fix this! This is the only thing that seems to have worked, I cant thank you enough!
Thank you! I was about to throw out this computer. I have had it for years and haven't been able to use it. Decided to give one more shot at fixing it and this did it! Thank you so much!!!
I’m a computer technician and I have to say the HP Stream line of Ultra-Portable systems is one of the most unserviceable products available out in the market and a nightmare for us to work on. There are other brands out there with similar configurations and they are all crap. Celeron-N, fixed RAM of a mediocre 2GB and an equally mediocre 32gb of fixed eMMC SSD. I was able to get into HP Recovery Manager to restore this laptop to factory configuration by hitting F11. For Mark to have to resort to remove all the factory partitions and upgrade to Windows 10, means something catastrophic happened to the original factory partitions and this was the only way to get this working again. Thanks for the video, although it’s been two years since this was posted, Mark. Maybe it’s time to have a follow up video on how this laptop is doing if your friend/colleague still has it.
@jeff, I currently am trying to reboot this HP 14-CB161WM (stream) with either windows 7//10//11... it was working fine until I reset it so I know the storage is fine.. but every time I load it into any USB with windows on it on the boot menu it says "We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click Load driver." I've tried going to BIOS changing things, I've tried CMD, I've tried multiple USB STICKS, I've tried disassembling it checking on the emmc drive.., I've tried getting the storage host from the HP website and downloading the storage driver and extracting it to the USB and loading into tyne driver from boot menu and clicking on it, does nothing. I'm a tech too and I believe this one is unrepairable... let me know if you know how to fix.
Great tutorial. Thank you mate! I am a pro and didn't want to struggle and your video saved me time. I am subscribing to you and giving you a thumbs up. I also watched your video all the way through twice.
THANK YOU... I have been so frustrated with not being able to figure out where this extra data came from... I was about to buy a new device. You saved me $1,000. :)
I too spent maddening hours trying every trick I could to get a fresh copy of windows on my hp stream to no avail. Thanks for your excellent presentation and tips

Worst HP Laptop regarding storage ever made. Excellent video and everyone with one of these should do as Mark instructed. It's a great little laptop once it can breath! Cheers Mark!
I agree, a very difficult technology to work with. Enjoyed the vid and very informative. I'm having an issue with a friend's device, it just won't install windows, keeps reading and reading and it has been three days now.
Heres my current HP stream 11 horror story: Due to being in a low income family, my school gifted me and other students laptops that used to be for google-classroom. I got one of the HP laptops. While they did clear all administrator passwords and web-blocks, they didnt factory reset them. They had downloaded "chrominium" which is just a different version of chrome. Due to the OS, I cannot download anything other than whats on the chrome web store. As a digital artist there is NO good art apps on there. So I tried EVERYTHING to revert back to a different OS, and NOTHING works. Hoping I can get a USB stick soon. Great video!
This was the only video that explained exactly how to upgrade. Thanks so much for your clear instructions. The only thing that has happened since is my touchpad now doesn’t work at all. thank you me and my got one for christmas many years ago and she gave me hers bc it had the same problem as mine and i ended up throwing away mine and just now i thought abt trying to fix my sister laptop
Do you know if later versions of Windows 10 use up more drive space as I followed all you did and only get 8 gig free space on a brand-new install of Windows 10 on my son's stream
I did it differently - I did not have to enable legacy support, but I used an application called Rufus which is freeware. This allowed me to create a USB stick supporting UEFI boot from the Windows 10 ISO you can create from the Media Creation Tool. The other thing is that for me at least the Stream 11 would not boot from the USB3 port but did from the USB2 port when the BIOS was set to boot (using Esc-F10) first from the USB stick. The only problem I had was the trackpad not working after the Windows 10 clean install - for this I had to install the Intel Serial IO driver from the HP support website.
Cool video. I think Microsoft should make a new version of 10 that is optimized and does not take up as much space. I manage to put Linux on mine stream. I also thought of another solution that could work. I figured one could use Linux to clear space and reformate the drive. After wards reformat the drive to a readable file formate for Windows but keep your recover partition then you attempt to use the bios to recovery to factory state. The process is more difficult then it sounds. I think Windows 10 is just not a good system for hp stream type computers because he updates will drain your space eventually.
Computer Nerd exactly what i was thinking. In the previous version of OS, there are sn optimised version of OS which won’t eat up as much space as Win 10 pro.

Yes, it works, but once you have done all the updates, you barely have any hard drive space left again. HHDs are cheaper and have bigger storage options
