- Soul Sounds is a choir based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The choir first came into prominence as the Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya school Senior choir, when directed by Soundarie David, it won a Sri Lanka Carol Competition in 1996. After they participated in the Llangollen Eistedfodd competition in Wales 2004, and subsequently leaving the school, the choir decided to continue singing with a new and independent identity, Soul Sounds.
Soul Sounds participated in the fourth World Choir Games in Xiamen, China winning two silver medals. In 2008, in competition for the second time, they won three gold medals at the fifth Games in Graz, Austria. The choir was invited to provide a choral contribution to a CD done in the UK by the UK Disasters Emergency Committee after the Asian Tsunami of December 26, 2004. Three other compact discs have been released, entitled Soul of the Season (2005), Soul Sounds in Australia (2007) and Soul Sounds in USA (2010).

Danno Budunge was written by the late John De Silva during the Tower Hall era. Tune was adapted from a composition of German composer Richard Wagner, adapted by Devar Surya Sena and John De Silva. - Zábava

Soul sounds is one of the ideal and adequate ways to feed the Sri Lankan music, to bring it out to the international audience

Music is an universal language, like Buddhism is a universal concept. its not a religion! its a way of life..plus this is a song and not Buddhist chanting...so nothing wrong of it using as a choir song...lets appreciate the goods regardless of the community behind it...i love this version! keep up the good work. do the maximum and come off with flying colours girls! The guy who wrote this is the brother of my grand-mother's father - "Procter" John De Silva of Kotte, as we call him in the family. Some of his descendents include Harsha Makalanda, Vajira of the chitrasena duo and Nihal Perera of Noori Estate.
Thank you Jean for the comment and valuable information!
- Jude
+jean sartre My great great grandfather was John De Silva.... The Makalanda's are all from my mother's side :)
Who cares of useless descendents..lol
I have heard the original music is German. Can you please elaborate.
very nice arrangement-excellent voices/singing/playing-flute in the background is lovely.Thanks for posting.

beautiful!
this is sooooo nice
Brilliant!!!
this is really nice ,thanks for your commitment :)
Great
People should stop making such a big fuss about religion here and just enjoy this wonderful renedition. This song is not about Christians praising Lord Buddha or anything else...John De Silva was a Christian when he wrote this song anyway. The song simply describes the virtues of the city of Anuradhapura as sung by princes Sanghamitta, Sanghabodi and Gotabhaya as they approached it on their journey to the Sri Maha Bodhiya.
Well done akka
I like your sound.
Thanks Jude ,
Super song and Super singing by Soul Sounds !!
As usual you have added your usual touch by providing background details.Well done for taking the trouble.
I must confess this is the first time I 've heard this group. So thanks again.
Anton.
Thanks for the appreciation!
I agree. Thank you!
This was brilliant, simply brilliant.WOW ! Would also like to see another effort by the same choir and same backup music but to include male vocals ( trained male vocals !) as well
i am a buddhist and i love this version. well sung. Every version of this has a very unique beauty. love it. oh and please don't drag religion to this. buddhism is not about hatred and jealousy. So Laksiri, before you make such an irresponsible comment ready and learn "Abhidarmaya" please
I am a buddha follower and some stupid idiots who have never heard a teaching of buddha trying to make issues out of nothing.Whats wrong with singing a song? In fact, this song is about Anuradhapura city. Well done soul sounds for the victory. this sounds amazing.
Well said. Thanks!
shaza....Great work.........
beautiful
Thumbs up for HFC.
Cheers SPC
I've got goosebumps (Y)
Nice music. :)

Thanks for the comment!
We learned this song at asia Pacific choir games lar year at Colombo. Really nice song. Can someone tell me what the lyrics mean
It says about the beauty of the ancient city of Anuradhapura.
@guitarmanaruna
Thanks Aruna. Saundarie David is their director who is an accomplished pianist educated at the Royal College of Music London, and is a lawyer by profession. All of them are working full time and are singing for the love of music !!

@manel08uk
Hello Manel,
Good to hear from you, and thanks for the lovely comment. It is said that John De Silva wrote the song for Sirisngabo around 1920 and together with Devar Surya Sena the melody was adapted from a Wagner variation. Believe it was sung originally by Hubert Rajapakse. I have also heard of another version by Lawrence Perera from the same era. Not sure who the original artist though!
Best Regards and god bless to you and family too!
Jude
Thanks. Yes, the melody is original. Noone has been able to verify the Wagner claim, to my knowledge.
You have all the reasons to be proud. Thanks for the lovely comment!

@kahawanu
Thanks for the comment!!
@ca0520
Couldn't agree more. Thanks!
Nice.......
@Mrsjazzat5
Thanks for the comment!
One of the best reneditions of this fantastic piece of music I've heard. To Laksiri and other false patriots, it may interest you to know that John De Silva was actually a Christian at the time he wrote this...yet he never made music an issue of religious divide, so why should you? Thanks as usual, Goonewj, for the great uploads.
Thanks for the lovely comment. Sorry for the late acknowledgement!
@wjsnax
Thanks for the appreciation!
Well said!
@drgunatilaka
Thanks for the lovely comment. They are brilliant!!
Sri Lanak is going to be a fool's paradise with this type of mentality!!
A system gets stabilized when the diversity increases!!
Chandra Weerasinghe I was referring to Anura' s comment
No worries. Thanks.
#wow #fantastic #hatersgonnahate #goosebumps
@ goonew: In your description you say "Tune was adapted from a composition of German composer Richard Wagner". Do you happen to know specifically which composition? I've been looking for a specific reference to verify this claim by many, since Kishani Jayasinghe's rendition flared up a huge controversy. Thanks in advance. - Kapila
@prasadbeligala
Agree. Thanks!
What game? And what planet are you on? They brought glory and honour to Sri Lanka by winning the 3rd place in the International Choir Festival when Sri Lanka was represented for the first time. Sri Lanka is a multi cultural country. I am a Christian myself and was born in Sri Lanka long before you were born. At a time when Sri Lanka is trying to build peace, we could really do without extremists like you. My channel is for music lovers regardless of ethnicity. Keep out of my channel!
I love this and also their rendition of Olu Pipila... I listened to both songs frequently by Souls Sounds but have noticed their recording of Olu Pipila has disappeared from CZcams!!!... do you know what happened to it?... what a shame that can't listen to it anymore as I personally thought it was the best cover of Olu Pipila that I've ever heard!... so sad that can't hear it any more!
Not sure what happened to it Sunethra. Thank you for the comment. I will see if i could dig it out from somewhere. Regards, Jude
@@goonewj thanks Jude!
@ceylonband
Thank you!
Love this so much. Thank you soundari. Your arrangements are fabulous. I feel so sorry for people who commented here. They don't know anything about music, history of this song/hymn. Do they know who's felix mendelssohn and why did he do this composition? Correct me if im wrong.
@Ungihan
Thanks!
@Tharupaba
Thank you Tharu. Trust all is well with you!
@HishanMelanga
Thanks!
@Dr196903
