      @@pugorilla8848 I won't expect too much on the software side because the SteamVR software development so fara seems very much like they implement whatever cool idea they get and then move on to the next cool idea. Never fully fleshing something out until someone else maybe picks it up again years later.
      I do expect to see something cool from Valve in the hardware department within a year though.

      @@pugorilla8848 DEFINITELY!! I think they should make it a more open source. Imagine the Steam Community but for the SteamVR experiences, where people can easily download VR home (or other) experiences from the store.
      There are NO dedicated spatial software right now, and that's a huge wasted opportunity. I think Vive is the closest one to doing spatial software. Their new headset is supposed to come with a multiplayer-ready home space, and possibly even a system for portals or something.
      Valve should be supporting folks like Anarchy Arcade or even WebXR but alas...

    4:47 interesting to hear, I thought the aero's optics were meant to be pretty good. What kind of lens is the somnium using?
    Did you try the aero before it had it's distortion fixed? Apparently it made a big difference, but now it has issues with chromatic aberration.
    Somnium sounds like a dream device but I can't help but be extremely wary of both it being too good to be true and somnium's background.

    Also side note - can we agree that lighthouse tracking is RIP soon? With the cameras, A.I. prediction and the implementation of cameras in controllers - I'm just not excited about anything that requires me to buy external trackers these days. Thoughts?

    • @SadlyItsBradley
      @SadlyItsBradley  Před rokem +11

      Until I have something that can replace my full body trackers, I don’t see it dead yet. But I’m aware it’s a niche use case reason. It’s also still quite hard for companies to produce their own camera tracked algorithms unless they have a ton of $$$$

    • @rfc5718
      @rfc5718 Před rokem

      There are 1000's of lighthouse based VR systems being used out there; since 2017 it's enabled sub-mm, very low latency full body tracking; nothing has yet surpassed this. It's also great fun bolting trackers to different objects for sports and gun games 🕹️

    • @jamesyoungerdds7901
      @jamesyoungerdds7901 Před rokem

      @@SadlyItsBradley I hear you - and I think, like you mentioned, those are easier upgrade paths for Index and earlier Pimax users where the only investment is the new headset.
      But these days, with so many advances in computer vision, data compression, router speeds and predictive a.i., I think even Valve, if they built the Index for the first time today, wouldn't be using lighthouse.
      Just as an engaged VR fan here, I bet (aside from Riverdance stage dancers), if smart people put in the effort with all the tools available, you could get very responsive and accurate full body tracking of femur/tiba/fibula/foot positions+vectors from just the hip positions+vectors using current headset cameras.
      Thanks again - as you know - just a big fan of the channel and industry 🙏

    • @royrogers495
      @royrogers495 Před rokem

      I agree. Although for now we still need a wire for high fidelity and processing power, but you can see that everything is moving towards wireless and inside out tracking.
      VR needs to remove as many barriers to entry and fiddly bits, for more than just enthusiasts to jump in.

  • @ShiYuMeng2
    @ShiYuMeng2 Před rokem +1

    There was a project from Razer called the Razer HDK2 partnered with OSVR. OSVR was a open source VR software framework while the HDK2 was an open hardware HMD. Both projects are dead.
    It is very hard to be financially viable in the HMD space especially if the software is buggy (which OSVR was). Coupled with the IR tracking never working correctly, the HDK2 was a terrible experience.
    It is good to see that Somnium VR1 is using a good tracking system (vive) and so they just need to ensure the HMD works well plus the software must be great too.

    • @Dionyzos
      @Dionyzos Před rokem +1

      The Pico 4 can manage a PPD a little lower than 1080p 27" monitors via Virtual Desktop which is pretty low res but not terrible (still unusable for me but the best I've seen yet). I think the Varjo Aero's 2800p is just enough to be usable with 35 PPD. A 4K screen is 60+ PPD at a reasonable distance. Upcoming MicroOLEDs are apparently coming close to that.
      My guess is that Apple will be first to make strides in that direction and spur on competition. I don't expect anything affordable in the next few years though unless Valve makes a big comeback.

    Like Pico with Tik Tok or Meta
    Even a Skyworth Pancake 1 at 450€ (4560x2280, 105°, display port,) with a major brand behind seems to be a bargain, and would have a better future.

    The Xtal shows how far off super high end, high res, human eye FOV pcvr is for the consumer (good luck Pimax). There's no demand for it outside of a few niche pcvr nerds, so it won't trickle down to the consumer level for a very long time until some amazing quantum leap in display, lense and processing power occurs and cheaply! If Pimax fail it, which let face it, they will......then who else is doing it?
