Everyone knew this was not an actual "competitive" drum off but just the best way to incorporate Fred Armisens (the guest who is famous from SNL) musical talent on the drums that worked out a lot better than if he were to just have a solo. A solo would have been a little less dynamic and a little less entertaining in general. This was the best approach from a producers point of view and it works. Everyone knows Fred isnt NEARLY as good but its still cool to see that a great actor has a little musical talent as well, and that's what makes this clip really cool 😎

@@TorgoLives i am not a Fred expert. Ive seen all his snl stuff and i know he wrote most of the songs he performed there like 'massechusets afternoon, which is actually one of the best songs ive ever heard, but i can tell you as a musician myself, his drums were a little sloppy in all technical terms, not bad at all, just not nearly as good mechanically as a full time musician. I have enough knowledge in both to know his chops are nothing special, hes a very talented musician, but his actual CHOPS arent quite to his best potential level. I guess what i meant is, Fred is actually amazingly talented, but his drum chops, and drum chops only in this comment, are not up to par with full time guys. Which takes barely anything away from his true talent because talent isnt all about chops and mechanics, proven by the fact that massechusets afternoon is such an incredible song. You get what im saying? I definitely worded it wrong, and sorry for the length of my reply lol

Questo is very cool, very humble, although he is a legendary drummer, he lets Fred do his thing. Questlove's Dilla beat is spectacular.

Props to Fred Armisen. I didn't think he could actually play. I thought this was going to be something akin to the Chad Smith Will Ferrel drum-off. Very cool.
I believe he was a drummer in a couple punk bands before becoming an actor. Its crazy stuff haha.

Fred is actually a talented multi-instrumentalist and even did an entire comedy special...For drummers. It was insane. Nevertheless, Fred earns his bread being funny, Quest makes it by beating skins. In terms of hours per year, Quest is a professional drummer.
Armison was a professional drummer. He was a pro drummer back in the 1980s. He was in Trenchmouth and was ridiculously good back then. We played a show with them and they packed the place. He was known as a bad ass drummer 30+ years ago.
good for them for having a bit of fun! I love fred and he's an incredible talent, actor and his drumming isn't bad either!! and its all a bit of fun. I just wish to point to Questlove's ingenous body of work as one of the greatest drummers of our time. Especially on albums like 'Voodoo' by D'angelo and Black Messiah, work that changed the way musicians the world over think about groove. Thank you questlove, you are a true inspiration.
Quest is not one of the greatest drummers of our time. There are loads better, not saying he is not a very good drummer though

Check out Fred Armisen in the band Trenchmouth in the 90s. I knew him as a drummer way before he was on tv. They put out some pretty great records.
