Your comment about quality of repair reminded me of a saying 0:14 our department had with the shop that worked on our vehicles. Invariably our vehicles would come back with more issues than they were sent in for. We coined the motto for the motor pool: They may not have time to do it right but they have time to do it over. I’ve always kept that in the back of my mind when it comes to any repair.

How about when you take it in and it comes back with scratches in your black paint or broken plastics under your hood, new scratches in your plastic interior parts or scratches on your leather steering wheel and or seats... Gotta love that.

I think the repair was spot on. The only other two things I was thinking about was putting a drop of oil in the recoil hole and maybe putting a wedge below the handle and the plastic if there is enough room. Thanks for the videos.

I might have tried something to bolster the handle. Maybe a piece of old inner tube. Hard to tell from the vid. In the end your solution was totally acceptable.

I think the starter cord broke and some just used the old cord rather than put a new one on.

A fix that works is a fix to me. I change the oil in my mower before every 5th mow. Starting is no issue, & I simply let it run for a couple of minutes to warm up, pull the dip stick, empty the oil into a tray, then fill it with recommended oil.

Great video as always. I had a toro I was working on that sounded like it was falling apart. Turned the deck was the culprit. I had to spot weld many different areas to fix it. All I could figure was they were mowing rocks or something that would knock the deck lose.

Hi James. From the video, it looked like the joints connecting the upper and the lower handle were loose or was flexing too much. That seemed to be the cause of the excessive handle play. How did you fix the speed control? Great video as usual. Thanks.
unfortunately I did tighten up and there's still to much flex at the very bottom of the handle

Good work! Maybe set up a customer maintenance program? Each fall they give you the mower for 30 minutes, fresh oil, air filter if needed, 15 point inspection and cleaning.

@@HomeGaragechannel charge for parts and transport (maybe a mobile service) it becomes a niche business? People throw away good equipment and buy a new “box” mower because they can’t maintain it.
Fixing the handlebar was just fine, least invasive is good. I would still look to see if there is any shearing marks under the starter or recoil assembly. Still would check all screws and housing for loose screws/bolts. Great job yet again!!! 😉

One brand you rarely hear of any more, and I can't recall if you've had one on this channel, is Snapper. For some reason I thought of that when I first saw this video. At one point when Honda mowers really became popular, all the other brands tried to "look" like a Honda.

Hi hope you can help. Carb problems. 6 horse gas engine. Jet came out easily. Another part fell out. Cylindrical with tiny holes. One end bigger than the other. Fell out and I don't know which end goes in first. Thank you
Should only go in one way. Is one end more narrow, so the tip can pop up into the venturi? Then the jet screws in, holding it in place.
sure push it into the carb and the look into the carb's air intake and see if you can see part of the emulsion tube sticking into the passage, try it with either end, one way will stick out the furthest. that's the way it goes in.
Some mowers have a small metal crimp in the recoil rope which prevents the rope from going in and out with the movement of the handlebars
I know that newer briggs engines have problems but I actually quite like this particular engine cause I've never had any issues with it on my power washer. They are also really easy to service as well.

Do you have a video on adjusting the valves on the previous generation flat head mower. I have a few that struggle starting and the compression is too low. This video as usual is top notch.
I do, but I think it's on a classic engine, so 3.5 ti 5 hp and unfortunately there will be no adjusting them since it requires the valves to be either clearance, lapped, or even replaced.

My first thought was to extend the pull rope to avoid drilling a hole in the handle.
Most of the factory holes are not simply drilled straight through, they are dimpled in a good amount on both sides. I believe this gives them some extra rigidity to help avoid cracking from flex. Thin and light handles are a way to make the mower lighter but it ultimately cuts production costs, not consumer costs.
Thinner and thinner metal.
More and more plastic.
Plastic wheels with no metal inserts or bearings.
Planned Obsolescence, I wonder just how much of a disposable world they want to make it..

Pretty close to my mower except larger wheels in the rear. I have the same problem with the 1-4 thingy for speed. Probably need to take it off and give it a little lubrication? I noticed the front cover that's over the wheels (10:50) is away from the assembly a bit on one side. I have the same problem but worse. Even after tightening up a few screw underneath its still there. Trying to get it off was a little hard without any help. The one thing that realy drives me crazy it the paint is peeling away.

I had a toro with a briggs engine making a chattering sound, it ended up being the muffler bolts backing off. After fixing that a similar sound came back about a month later and before I could find the source of the noise it ended up shearing the blade bolt off inside the crank and the blade shot out from underneath the mower

I use to love doing the valves on cars in the past but not now I have a diesel engine car and I think it has hydraulic tapits it now go's to my local friendly machine for a service whom dose a great job a reasonable price

the same thing happened to my father’s old craftsman 21 inch mower he since then replaced it from the sound of it I think that this mower just needs a new pull cord & from there I think the problem will be solved 😀😀

i saw those plastic battery mowers from stihl and any other brands and man those are designed to rot get large cracks or the battery failing overtime. so i hate dealing with stupid battery equipment. instead i get the gas ones so i dont have to deal with stupid issues.

Mower prices have escalated substantially over the last few years. How costly would they be if not so much plastic utilized? How much of mowers' increased costs are to make them Eco-friendly? So is plastic (and Eco-friendliness) making mowers cheaper or is it the reason for their increased cost?
to me it would seem as a "gas guzzling" tax picking gasoline no other reason for me.
That noise is recoil trying to engage. Maby shorten or lengthen rope.
The pull cord is missing the metal tab that keeps it from retracting too far. That will fix the noise fast easy and cheap.

I think it's a good idea the way it fixed it No I don't like those battery mowers On my other youtube channel talking about a eighty year old man Spend eight hundred dollars on a lowe's battery mower He had something hard Broke the plastic that holds the blade And they don't even make a part to fix it So eight hundred dollars in the garbage Thank you for the video

changing oil every year is too often? I use full synthetic and change sometimes twice a year. I change the oil in my trimmer more often than that because the oil always looks dirty to me.

I wonder if taking a loop of pull rope off of the recoil spindle might have solved the noise issue and still allowed for a full pull start.
Yes, adjusting (shorten) the length will solve the issue.

@@HomeGaragechannel I was thinking that if moving the attachment point closer to the engine was enough to keep the dogs from engaging the flywheel, that perhaps the recoil had a wrap too many on the pulley, making the cord too short.
Hey! I own a Briggs & Stratton 500e series engine, and I wonder what the valve clearance should be, because I can’t find anything online..
it's based on the model number, not what the sticker says. If you look at the side of the engine, right next to the muffler, it should be engraved there.

looked up the information in the owners manual.
Tecumseh would put a metal clip on their pull ropes right at the pulley opening to prevent this from happening. I bet it would fix this issue.
