How to Take a Brush Hog off a Tractor

- I had a question from a viewer about how to take a brush hog off a tractor. It never occurred to me that such a video would be needed, but when you think about it, it makes sense. If you're buying a tractor and you've never owned one and you plunk down the money, when it's delivered you may never get training on how to get whatever is mounted on the three point off. I can sure see that getting a heavy implement unattached would be intimidating if you've never done it.
This video shows what to do, basically, drop the brush hog to the ground, shut the tractor off. Make sure your stabilizers will allow the lower link arms to move outward (that's usually only a problem if they're mounted on the inside of the arms and some are), then pull the pins on the lower links and disconnect. Take your top link off (and I didn't mention in the video, you may have to twist it in or out to do so and there could be a jam nut holding it where it is that has to be loosened), remove your PTO shaft and you're done. It all sounds really easy but it's not if you've never done it.

Want to adjust the CENTER LINK up to the middle spot, but had no idea HOW to do so.... after watching your video, it looks like if I remove the LOWER STABILIZER BARS, the Center LINK SHOULD BE movable...

This is exactly what I needed. Well, this and your video on attaching. It has been years since I used a PTO and I just bought a little, baby Ford 1300 tractor for my two acres. I couldn't remember everything about hooking, unhooking and adjusting, and I'm thankful you were here with this helpful advice.

Tractor Mike, you're right. I did it all the time when I was a kid on an Allis Chalmers 30 hp. My only sticking point was the PTO and I'm glad I watched your video because I didn't realize there were several types. I also didn't remember the lift adjustments. Good thing I checked!

Good video. I set my bush hog off on blocks of wood to make it easier to move the mower around if I'm a little off when hooking up to the tractor & to help keep the blades of the mower out of the dirt. I also like to use a pry-bar to remove the lower arms of the 3 point from the mower, saves my foot.
You’re a lifesaver! After two years of not needing the bush hog because the zero turn is enough, now I can take it off to use the box grader!

But when I tried the link in this video that should take me to the video that "showed" all 3 types, the link below this video that should have taken me to the one that "shoes all 3 types did not work , so I was unable to watch the one I needed to see. I have seen already the one above.

+drbbhiggins You're certainly welcome, I will try to do a flail video. I've had more requests for that than any other video, but the problem is, flail mowers just don't exist in my area. I was actually discussing that less than a week ago with a buddy who's been around the business a lot of years and he said he'd try to help me find one to video around and get input from the owner. Flail mowers cost quite a bit more and I guess, here in the Ozarks, no one is willing to pay for the advantages of flail. As soon as I can find one to test out and video I'll get it done. note: Sometimes it's better to remove the top link first to get more room for the PTO removal. Kubota compact tractors have a telescoping stabilizer which is a pin with a keeper pin underneath. I favor Kubota stabilizers over any others.
NOTE #2: As for older (example 1959 jd 430) tractors. There is a cross bar that is pinned to the frame and extends to the implement to a point near the top link hook up. OR is a modification that might attach to the drawbar and extend to the deck of the mower to a homemade point.

Ha I think you were referring to me Haha , ok Mike I do the same at the end and I have one for you from an old timer, always put a wooden block under the front of the cutter about the same height as your cutting height and it so much easier to hook up and it's not sunk in the mud. 😀
+Steve Rob We always did that on the farm, for some reason that's something dad taught me I've never done. It probably makes hooking up easier, especially, like you said, if the cutter sinks. Good point!

I am unable to release the drive shaft from the PTO.. I press the button on the drive shaft and pull..(The button pushes in). It is stuck. It doesn't even wiggle. do you have any suggestions.?

On a JD5400 (and I expect many others), if you don't tie those lower arms together, they knock hard on the tire treads. Surely possible to wreck a tire!

hi mike, I was looking forward to seeing the link you have here about three types of driveline connections to pto. I needed to learn about taking a howse brushhog of my pto. However. I did mess around until I got it unhooked. It was a twist collar, but I was having trouble because the face plate on the connector was cracked, and part of the place where it was cracked was sticking up and not allowing the collar to twist as it should have been able to easily do had it not been cracked with part of it sticking up not allowing the faceplate to twist and slide underneath a couple of small pins.
I've personally never liked the kick method. Known people who bruised their feet, and heard stories about breaking some of the small bones in the foot kicking stuff. Beyond that, you've only one foot on the ground when kicking, which can leave you off balance if something moves suddenly, like for instance the rotary tiller someone else mentioned. I try to keep a 2lb rubber mallet hanging on the tractor somewhere for getting the lower arms on and off if they want to be stubborn.
question...my son says pto covers always turn with the shaft....my opinion is that they should shield from the spinning shaft and not turn themselves...isn't that what the chains on the cover are for? which is right i do not have enough experience to know
If you attach the chain to a fixed place on the tractor or implement the covers don't spin and that's how it's supposed to work. The problem is that if the chain comes loose you can have a spinning chain and that's a safety hazard. So, I've heard that on the new cutters, some manufacturers aren't supplying the chain anymore, so you have to figure out your own way of keeping it from spinning. You also have to keep the cover lubricated, there are grease fittings on the shields that most people don't realize are there. If you don't keep them greased they seize up and fail and yank the chains out of the plastic loop and then they're spinning, which is pretty common. Bottom line, the best safety is to never, ever get near a turning PTO shaft, whether or not that shield is turning, but if everything is set up right, it's not.

At my school I learnt how to take a mower slasher off the 3 point and we put a tow ball bar on the 3 point instead of the rubber tie downs

My old tractor's stabilizers attach at the axle and the other end slips on the implement pins. Problem is when they're not attached to an implement they drag on the ground, or worse, dig in when backing up.

Don, I'm not familiar with that cutter, but you can look up a schematic of it on Deere's parts page: partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/. Just enter your model number and it will show you every part on that cutter and from that you should be able to determine how it comes off. It could be a push pin, a bolt or a bolt and snap ring. If it's a bolt and snap ring I probably wouldn't take it off.
Mike , I just bought a new Kubota brush hog and requested the push pin type PTO shaft . My dealer said, that they had been coming in with the pull collar lately and he didn't know if they made the push pin type any more. It came in with the pull collar.
I don't like it and neither do some other old people, I know. Do you know , is there some advantage to the pull back collars ?
Not really. They can all be a little hard to release. I think I slightly prefer the twist type which you don't see too much. You'd think by now there'd be a better way to attach a PTO, the current design is like 80 years old.

I'm disabled and my poor wife has to get down and hook up the PTO shaft. The ring type we have that you pull back on, she has no trouble pulling back and taking off. It is the PULL back on the ring and PUSH on the PTO shaft, that is her big problem :-/

Yes, that tractor had R-1 ag tires all around.

No, I'll put that on the list. They sort of want to go everywhere, don't they :). The tiller is sitting on the tines, which rotate, so when everything is unhooked, the main frame can move quickly which people may not expect the first time. I can see that being a video that might keep someone out of trouble. Great idea!

But how to take off the pto from the actual bush hog? Is it secured by more than just a shear pin? Can't seem to get mine off after I take the shear pin out.
The shear pin generally doesn't secure the PTO to the brush hog. If it did, when you sheared the pin, the back end of the PTO might come off and you wouldn't want that. There are a variety of ways those can be attached depending on the brand and age. Mine has a push pin that lets it slide off, several have a bolt that you remove to pull it off, some of the older ones had a snap ring behind the yoke that hold it on if the shear pin fails. That could be what you have.
Tractor Mike thank you sir - that was my concern. Didn't want yoke to come off during shear bolt failure. My brush hog shaft does have a grove at the end but no clip so need to find new clip. I think the yoke is rusted on which has led to much cursing trying to get off... which is why I was wondering if there is some other securing mechanism I was not seeing. thanks for all the videos!
I was trying to take my old PTO off and replace it. I took the bolt out of the yoke and I could see it was free (not frozen) but it wouldn't come off. I beat on it for a couple of hours, then called in the calvary. My neighbor and I finally figured it out. It was one of the older ones with the snap ring. I didn't see your comment about split rings til this morning. Why would they need a split ring, when It's got a bolt through it, that's not going to break.

Mike, do most people really just set these on the ground, or is it better to drop them on some sort of plywood platform, or at least stick some 4 by 4's under the front of the thing?
It really varies. Honestly, whatever makes you feel better. I've been fortunate enough to have room for mine in a barn, if I kept it out I'd probably go the 4 X 4 route. I'm not sure the plywood would last too long under there. The part that sets on the ground is usually pretty thick and won't rust through easily so you're probably okay on bare ground as well.
Push rod will not depress and can not remove PTO shaft. Any ideas?

Try lots of penetrating oil, I'd think there's some rust in there. Even if the rod were broken, it should still go in to release. Has the shaft been on all winter or did this just happen?
We recently bought the tractor, and couldn't figure this out; the shafts was actually on backwards
+Billy Winters PTO shaft? If that's what you're talking about I've seen that before. On some of them it's a little hard to tell which way is the right way.
