I had an old Bush Hog brand finish mower that I inherited from the previous owner of my property. It never worked well. It often dug into the ground and bent the casters, having to replace several over the years which is expensive. This video made me realize the previous owner had the swivel bracket setup backwards where there was no swiveling happening at all. I took it apart and assembled it correctly and now that finish mower works like a dream, hugging the ground perfectly and not digging in. Thanks for taking the time to explain this.
That's awesome....glad it worked for you!
Big help !!! Actually, I had removed that horseshoe fitting from my Bush Hog a few years back. I didn’t understand it’s purpose. I will track it down tomorrow. A great explanation. Very helpful.
My friend who sold me that orange brush hog handed me that piece and said, I don't know what this does, but it came with the brush hog!! Thanks for watching.
You did some brush hogging, but also tree hogging. That's useful.
Sometimes I think you lost your calling as a teacher. You explain things well.
I don't think I have the patience to teach!! Deb was on the zero turn today, but we didn't film any of it. Always something to be mowed on Piney Grove! Thanks for watching.
😂❤@@PineyGroveHomestead
My king kutter scissors were on wrong also. Watched the other guy's video you communicated with for proper placement. Thank you so much.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching.
good video on making sure you have the flexibility you need. My land pride uses a variation of the flex frame. and you can see it work.
We use our brush hogs a lot! All 3 are King Kutter.....no reason...that's just how it worked out. Thanks for watching.
That's good information. I glad you make video's like this it's very helpful.
I worked on a brush hog tailwheel today rebuilding it. One thing we do a lot of is MOW!! Thanks for watching.
Every had that Brittany out ruffed grouse hunting? Great video. Learned something here.
No but that would be fun. We have some quail on the property but she has more fun with frogs and lizards! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please.
Thank you! I feel like all we do is mow and brush hog!
Dang. Wish I found this sooner! Just bought replacement parts for my frontier 2084 because we haven’t been using this top link correctly!
It's got to flex somewhere between the top link and the tailwheel!
Nice video! Anybody else spot the lizard run down the wall at 3:00 minutes.. you should name him lol
That's funny. Thanks for watching.
Great info. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Thank you.
Thanks for watching. We do a lot of brush hogging and mowing!
Thank you for this suggestion.
You bet!
Great info.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
love the video ! I use my bush hog like that too!
Check this one out: czcams.com/video/2LtKLLMwSRE/video.html
When you use a brush hog or grooming mower ! You need to use a “soft “ link on top or a piece of chain so that the cutter will follow the contour of the ground better
Not if you have the flex built into the mower like I show in this video. Most brush hogs have this type of hitch.
I've never seen anyone use a top link with a brush hog. We always use a short chain as a top link so you can still pick it up if needed but the chain allows it to follow the contours of the land and won't bend the brush hog if you cross a ditch or terrace wrong
That's why it has that pivot point. I think most people use top links.
@PineyGroveHomestead but they won't pivot enough if you cross too much angle. Of the 8 or 10 people I know locally, none use a top link. We live in the foothills of NC so nothing is flat here so maybe that's why. I use a chain so I can still lift it but most people around here use nothing for a top link. they pick it up by the lower arms and let the rear wheel roll. I've seen several brush hogs on you tube bent and beat to death from using a top link but not around here. Most old timers would never use a top link on a brush hog unless it's chain
Interesting!!! Do you have any pictures of this setup? @@chaseledbetter5186
Yeah after running a chain with my brush hog I'm not going back. It follows contours better and has no binding anymore.
@joerapo yeah agree. That 6 or 8 inches of pivot with a top link isn't enough. Plus that's a newer thing. Old bush hogs didn't have a pivot point. Anyone who tries a chain never goes back to a solid link that I've heard of. I guess if your land is completely flat you could get by but there's no advantage. You can still pick it up all the way with a chain it just lets the rear flow up and down as much as needed
I have had my king cutter bh for 20 + years and I usually cut with that top link unhooked because when I go over uneven terrain the U bracket turns all the way down and binds then lifting the deck to a higher level then I want to cut ,, I will have to see if mine is assembled correctly and maybe I wont have to cut with it unhooked ... thanks for this information!!!
Many are sold put together wrong! Thanks for watching.
Very helpful Brad. You explained things well. Now, if you can Deb out there brush hogging, you can SUPERVISE. LoL 😂
I was mowing with HER zero turn a few hours ago and she kicked me off it. True story! Thanks for watching.

Very well explained in every detail, thanks from a newbie
thanks for watching!
Those first 2 brush hogs are virtually identical to a Chinese one I have just purchased in NZ. I consider the way rear wheel is attached to body is a design flaw. It should run on an independant mounting bolt to make height change easier.
I don't currently own a brush hog but I've used many in the past when did farm work every summer for over 10 years. None of the ones I used in the past included that pivot.
Also puzzling me is the fact that my tractor's 3-point hitch doesn't produce any down force and will easily raise upwards if my 3-point implement gets pushed upwards by something.
I can see that pivot allowing a brush hog to change its angle with the ground though. That might be useful if you want the reward wheel end to be able to independently raise upwards. Without that pivot, pushing upwards on the wheel would raise the entire brush hog.
On the other hand, the brush hogs I've used only had a single wheel so allowing just the rear wheel end to independently raise would allow the front of the brush hog to potentially hit the ground more often.
Are you certain all brush hogs, even low priced discount models are supposed to include that piece and related pivot?
BTW I have a hydraulic offset flail mower that I find works very well for us.
All of our brush hogs are King Kutters and they come that way. I've seen the 45 degree supports cut and chain welded there for flex.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Ty Sir 🏆 🙏 🤠
I hope it was helpful!
Good information! I finished bush hogging the other day and realized I lost my top link pin. 🤦♂️ Must not have been gone long, because I didn’t even notice until I went to pick it up and head to the house.
I've planted many a pin in my time!!! I forgot to put the side pin in the other day and brush hog fell off. Always something.
Great video! I have that horseshoe bracket on my tractor and I honestly thought it was just something that was added by a previous owner for who knows what reason! lol! Of course it is also backwards. So that will be corrected as well. Question though, for quick hitch setups, would that be why you see some brush hogs that use chains to attach the top of the 3pt to the back of the cutter, to make up for the lack of the horseshoe backet and still allow the cutter to pivot?
I've seen that before.. I think my oldest brush hog came that way and I put bars back on it. Thanks for watching.
I use chain, also, but not for the top link. I replaced the "45-degree brackets" with lengths of chain. They max out to lift the attachment, but flex when, say, backing into a hill. We have very uneven ground in New England.
That's a good way to rig it too.
Also remove the driveshaft guard so you know your brush hog is 'assembled correctly'.
another simple solution is to use chains instead of your two bars and and you dont need a swivel hitch swivel hitch,i do contract slashing in australia and have no problems..oh yeah i don,t use a rear wheel
😂😂we heard that fart 💨 good video 👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾
We don't remember that in edit, but it's likely! Thanks for watching.
A chain toplink is the way to go.
No idea why TSC and RK struggle so much in putting the king kutter flex hitches together correctly. Was at two different RKs and a TSC Yesterday and the top link was wrong on every one of around 20 rotary cutters. A lot of people running around out there dragging their tail wheel every where they go.
It might be more about the $10 teen labor. "Hey kid, go put those mower things together!"
I wonder if the back wheel on my hog is installed correctly. I have lot of play. What iit suppose to do? It never seems to have any weigh on it?
Take a look at this video, maybe it's the tailwheel hub??: czcams.com/video/0gHzukAFx3g/video.html
Here's all our brush hog configurations:

Our you can use a chain as a top like. Who’s actual works better
Really quick question, who makes the orange brush hog in the first part of this? I'm pretty sure I have the same one, but its been repainted. Just do not know who makes it.
All of them are King Kutter. Thanks for watching.
@@PineyGroveHomestead Thank you so much! I was missing this shackle as well and realized I should probably get it replaced.
I use a section of chain instead of the top link or swivel.
I've seen that before.
There is other ways mine has a chain not solid link to rear of the deck that allows lifting of deck and free upward movement.
One of my old ones had the chain too.
So which is better to have? A flex hitch or rigid?
The flex hitch is best for uneven ground and going forward. We do a lot of extreme brush hogging in thick brush and it doesn't back over thicker trees as well as the fixed hitch. It wouldn't be good for this: czcams.com/video/2LtKLLMwSRE/video.html
Any idea what you call that top link bracket?
swivel kit www.brokentractor.com/p/king-kutter-rotary-cutter-swivel-kit-501027-501027/
apparently I have ADD because I kept focusing on the lizard running down the wall in the shop...LOL
Lizards are cool to watch too!
So what is the name of that horseshoe piece of metal so i could try and find one
King Kutter calls it a swivel kit: www.kingkutter.com/501027-swivel-kit-kutter
Shouldn't a 3point hitch float and absorb this kind of motion or is this just a concern for additional float beyond the normal travel of the 3pt hitch? I know my 3pt hitch "floats" down and hydraulically lifts. I can go behind the tractor and completely lift an (extremely small...) implement to the top of my 3point hitch's range and then it just floats back down to my set point. It's one of the reasons you can't "force" something like a plugger or a tiller to a certain depth and either have to add weight or just wait for it to scratch enough to get down to the point where you've set your 3pt.
I do think some of the more industrial "big ag" tractors do have some ability to hydraulically press implements down to certain heights, but I'm not aware of any compacts or subcompacts that have the ability to do this. They all float down to a set point.
Admittedly, you are a bit more aggressive with that brushhog at the end of the video than I ever am. lol.
What am I missing?
A brush hog has to pivot or it will stress out the tailwheel over uneven ground. If you rely on the tailwheel to pick up the whole implement plus the tractor arms from the back it will break the tailwheel off!
Woods brush hogs dont need that bracket with how they're designed
Good to know!
Brush Chief doesn't use that bracket, the down bar has a pivot point after the top link.
There are many ways to get flex!
A length of chain has been successfully used for years instead of a top link...
So that is the difference between a brush hog and a finish mower
this is our finish mower: czcams.com/video/hyXh-gjfF0E/video.html
Where is Joel?
I don't know?
They are bush hogs and or rotors cutters. What the hell.
Bush Hog is a brand name.
Depends on where you're from, bro, we call em brush hogs here, just sayin'.
Brush hogs should be mounted on the front of the tractor.
But how to hook up the PTO! 🤣🤣🤣
@@PineyGroveHomestead Hydraulic motor. No PTO drive shaft.
That would be ideal for viewing the work being done. Tim in northern TN
Get a skid steer, that's what I did.
@@SouthernGround I have a Kubota SVL 97 high flow, a five-foot brush hog and a FECON forestry mulching head. But I can't find a 15 ft batwing bush hog that will work with it.
