    Hardly an instrument sounds so typical of a medieval market as the rauschpfeife. Thanks to its enormous loudness, the sound of this instrument reaches to the furthest corners of the market. The fingering of this infernal whistle is like a German recorder. The lowest note is G. So when you begin on the A, you can play in A minor.
    This rauschpfeife is made of rosewood and the overall length is 52.5 cm. The diameter of the funnel at the open end measures 9.5 cm.

    Oh god!! I need this precise instrument. I adore early music. I play recorder descant, treble and above... mostly folk and medieval styles as they're my favourite... I'm guessing this will help me on shawms? these are just captivating to me, I love bagpipes too unsurprisingly 😄 thanks for the demo!

    There is a huge similarity between shawm and zurna(the instrument used in mehter military bands)I recommend you to listen zurna, hope you like. It also has a very loud voice.

    Is the fingering on the Medieval practice chanter the same as this Rauschpfeife? Like do they both have the German Recorder fingering? I don't want to sound bad on a very loud instrument haha.

    So with a windcap you dont need to be playing directly into the double reed like you would with a oboe, so its more like a bagpipe in that sense that you don´t need a super tight embouchoure directly on the reed? making it a bit easier to play.

    • @Folkfriends
      @Folkfriends  Před 8 lety

      absolutely right!

    • @MrHestichs
      @MrHestichs Před 8 lety

      Huh well thats easy! Can you still vibrato, articulation, staccato with the cap on?

    • @Folkfriends
      @Folkfriends  Před 8 lety +1

      Staccato works using your tongue. Vibrato can be done a little bit. That very much depends on the strength of the reed. Basically the Rauschpfeife isn´t really meant to play with articulation. Its rather an on or off instrument like a bagpipe!

    You have got a really cool collection. That little guy/girl/genderless musical being on the bottom row, far left side, what is that? It speaks to me aesthetically, and looks like it would have quite a unique sound.

    I was wondering, why don't you sell medieval shawms ?

    • @Folkfriends
      @Folkfriends  Před 7 lety +1

      We did, but the interest was very low. Furthermore there was a lot of trouble in getting new reeds quickly all the time, since they didn´t last that long when being mouth blown.
