To many people skimp on boots and go for comfort over protection. Protection should be number one in any boot used for off-road riding. Having a loaded adv bike engine case come down on your ankle in an off in hard pack or rocky terrain is going to put even the best protective boots to the test. We had a rider in our group (Who was prob the best rider in our group) have an off heading into well 3 on the CSR in August, front wheel got caught in a hard pack rut coming out of a corner and the bike come down on him, crushing his ankle between engine case and the hard pack. Long story short he had to be evacuated out and now almost 5mths later he still isn’t back on the bike, cracked his ankle and leg and badly tore ligaments which has taken the longest to heal. If you ride off-road for long enough eventually your going to have an off that’s going to at best put you off the bike for a while. Buy good quality protection suited to your riding and most importantly wear it!!

My bike fell on my ankle last weekend, still feeling it, going to get better boots today, protection is key! Doesn't take gnarly, just one loose rock on the side of the road barely moving.🤣 My brother broke his rolling backwards while turning around, same with his friend. I think most accidents happen when you're going slow and you're tired. I've never been hurt going fast or in gnarly stuff. 55 years riding, never really thought about safety until now🤣

Great video mate. I ran a set of budget O'Neal boots for 11 years and then swapped out to a set of Alpinestar Tech 7's and I'd never go back to the O'Neals! So much more comfort and you can actually walk in them without looking like you have fused ankles. Plus the Alpinestars have a heel raiser in them to keep you up on your toes. One other thing about the Enduro boots compared to the MX ones is the sole. Enduro boots will have a chunkier sole and the MX will have a smoother sole. The chunkier sole is so you can walk or push in mud for grip when off road

  • @tungstentwohundredandtwent7007

Based on recommendations from a couple experienced riders and my own assessment I decided that I couldn’t do everything with one pair of boots so I bought a pair of Forma Adventure Low boots for general riding and a pair of Alpinestars Toucan boots for what I thought would be “more off-road, more serious” stuff. However, an experience a couple of weeks ago, while wearing the Formas makes me think I’ll be wearing the serious Alpinestars much more. At less than walking pace I was trying to a tight u turn on a typical country dirt road intersection. I misread the slope left to right grabbed the front brake (stupid I know) and snapped down onto my right side. The only drama was my right foot was under the swing arm, with the weight of the bike on top of me twisting the lower leg and ankle. I think I was millimetres from doing serious damage. There just isn’t much support in that style of boot snd it did surprise me how much load was transferred through to the lower leg and ankle. Bear in mind that ankle is already full of pins and screws so I’m very wary. For me, the Alpinestars are going to get a lot more use. I’ll wear the loss of flexibility and ease of walking but I know my confidence level will recover. I’m not bagging the Forma boots. The quality seems very good and they’ll suit many people but for me, I think they’ll be gathering dust in the cupboard rather than in the bush.

Recovering from a broken leg at the moment. 6 weeks in 2 casts then moonboot for another 6 weeks the whole time on crutches. Three lots of surgery involved. Lockdown travel went from 10km range to 10 meters. Bed couch toilet. And the break didn't even occur when riding.
My advice is not to skimp on protection. Breaking bones sucks!
On a positive note my leg xray looks like Mick Doohan's

Statistically lower leg injuries are most common when riding a bike. I bought Alpinestars goretex adventure boot, expensive but comfortable and they have twisting protection. A few days later they litteraly saved my right leg from snapping like a twig when falling in a sand hill and my toes for snagged in the sand during the fall. Believe me, it is worth the money! Buy once, cry once is my philosophy. Just paid $570CAD tax included for the Forma Terra Evo's. The adventure style on this video are $100 cheaper. The extra $100 was worth it for the extra ankle protection, better sole as its replaceable and better materials. Also these are wide foot boots and fit well for me.

Once I made the change there is a level of relief in knowing that I've protected my feet and lower leg to the best of my ability. The waterproofing would make them worth the price, let alone the protection.

I thought I was sold on the Forma Adventures, until I actually tried them on in the store and was shocked at how little protection they provided. Just goes to show you can do all the internet research you want, but going to a store and trying some on will tell you right away if it's the right boot. Personally I will not ride trails without my Alpinestars Corozals, and even those don't provide enough protection at times. Stronger boots are intimidating at first, but you'll get the hang of them and they will probably save your foot or leg at some point!!

To add to your advice, I would say it also depends on what and how you ride. If you are riding a lighter bike, you can get away with softer, more comfortable boots.
I’ve switched from the Forma Adventure boots to Gaerne SG12s (full mx style) as the 1290 SAR is a big heavy bike and could do some serious damage if it were to fall on me. It also helps that I find them comfortable enough for full day and multi-day rides.

Motorcycle boots are often made to a narrow cut for styling purposes; and also have thick-walled padding built in; so the finished interior space is usually much smaller than your standard workboot. Also there's not much stretchability in the heavy walls. So be cautious about sizing, especially if buying on-line sight-unseen. I found that I had to order 2 sizes larger than my usual workboot, in order to be at least slightly comfortable in width at the front.

Boots are like helmets, you can get an ece 22.05 & dot approved helmets for sub 200$. They will support your head as much as $400 dollar lids, they will just be heavy and loud. But with boots, you can do the opposite of little more than normal boots protection but great comfort. Find a price range you like and shop with-in that range. Most websites have a min-max price scale. The gaerne fastback enduro seems to have the best price to option ratios though. @$350 usd (in the states) our the Alpinestars Tech 7's @ sub $400 usd.

Tight boots can be loosened to form fit your foot by soaking them in warm water then draining and stuffing them with news paper to suck up excess moisture then putting them on whilst wet/damp with sock you would normally wear them walking around it them until they almost dry out. Carefully remove them then let them sit and dry out in the shade and away from any heat source.

Also depends on how close you are to civilization... If you are in the middle of nowhere... MX.
Buying expensive straight away can be a good thing... but some people don't like the offroad that much, so can go cheap till you know you like it. Keep them as a backup or sell them off to another that is unsure and keep the cycle going, as most gear is still 100% functional 2nd hand, most would still say to buy new helmets only though.

I have a pair of the Forma adventure boots and Fusport Mx boots. The Fusport adventure boot was as close to the Forma adventure boot as you could buy. The Fusport Mx boots at $200 aud is actually very good with great protection for the price. I had Gaerne/ Sidi and alpine stars mx boots before and they were great but I find it hard to justify the price of these boots when compared to Fusport boots.

After watching this originally we actually thought good question what are the statistics on boots for off road mx free ride adventure. This info was obtained from pro down to local clubman fun riders and yep you guessed it though Forma boots are very rarely mentioned the pro Hard Enduro type riders are all wearing Sidi Gaerne etc and the expensive stiff motocross style boot with occasional injuries where by far and away the worst injuries were the riders wearing cheaper more flexible less rigid boots. It was quite clear for a better chance of minimal injury though expensive the mx style stiffer more protective boot is the better choice. Good question though. I learned a lot about something I had never before considered.

taking up riding offroad (back road riding) again after a 25yr hiatus the 2nd thing i bought after a decent helmet was some traditional moto boots…which i’ve found i don’t like wearing…..
now in my 50’s with far less flexibility and creaky knees i don’t like the stress the moto boots put into my knees and find shifting a PIA with less ankle motion…
hence i wear work boots most of the time…and are way more comfortable when i have to man handle and walk the bike…

Having bought "Adventure Boots" myself the first round and realizing they had very little protection, I really should have bought my Sidi Crossfire MX boots from the beginning. I recommend ALL riders buy the BEST BOOT PERIOD. Even if it's more than they can afford. Your feet allow you to ride, as well as walk. You'll need them!

wouldn't suggest a work boot (safety boot) as the steel toe caps are meant for top down force whereas a motorcycle boot toe protection are meant for frontal impact. In fact, steel toe cap boots are outright dangerous as I have seen multiple incidents where riders had their toes chopped off during and accident. This is due to the fact that steel toe caps are meant for top down force and minor frontal impacts (i.e. you kicked something hard), and when there is a hard frontal impact, the steel toe caps will collapse inwards and behave like a knife resulting in the decapitation of the toes.

I have heard that about work books in the past cutting toes off never seen it happen in all my years (30+ years in a factory) not saying it couldn’t happen just never seen it happen, I also think the force it would take to damage steel toes is a lot and seems like you would have other things to worry about. With that said I still think get the most boot you can afford and instead of worrying about toes think more about ankles

i can certainly council anybody against wearing steel capped boots. i got into a bad situation years ago and the cap acted like a guillotine snapping all bones in its way including exploding the knuckle at the base of the big toe ., don't risk an overly flexible foot bed /steel knife situation.

  • @Geshmaal
    @Geshmaal Před 2 lety +3

I was always told steel toe caps are a bad idea because you can end up crunching your toes/foot bones with them in an impact. Might just be an old wive's tale but it's made me apprehensive of just using work boots. I've been considering getting the Forma Adventure boots for a good while though but mostly to keep try right up my leg in the winter and for something that's alright to walk around in for the summer! It's actually difficult to get off road legally in Scotland unless you own land or pay to use it, I just pootle down bumpy roads on a V-Strom. The Forma Adventures are £160 at the moment in the UK, a steal!

Ok update to my other comment on recovering from a broken leg. 9 months later I've done it again. Tib and fib this time. As much as I used to love my forma adventure boots they are useless and did nothing. They are good at preventing friction injuries but not those from an impact. My drop was a walking pace fall fully loaded coming out of a creek bed on the DR. I'd suggest spending whatever it takes to get a comfortable pair of mx boots.

Don't wear steel cap boots as in a minor crash or drop the cap can rotate backwards and amputate your toes at the joints. Extremely dangerous to use on a motorcycle even worse than sneakers for the reason above.

I'm recovering from a Liz-Frank fracture in my right foot, 6 bones broken, some in more than one place. 3 screws re-attached ligaments. My front wheel washed out on loose rock and my blike smashed my foot into my shin. Literally folding my foot like a taco. I was wearing Gaerne fast back Enduro boots. The surgery cost plus emergency room & physical therapy will total in the $40,000 ish range not to mention the pain... the time recovering... And the fact that my foot may never be the same. If you're going to be off road there is always a chance of your bike coming down on your foot even if you're not riding a gnarly trail. Foot protection should always be a top consideration/concern as it might be the best insurance you ever buy. I'm trading out my fast back's for SG-12's which I believe offers the highest level of protection of all the available boots on the market. I would say, "save yourself a lot of money by spending a lot on your boots"

If “blowing my money” is the right term ( which it’s clearly not) then man I’m blowing it out the water. There are dozens of comments on this and other similar channels are about broken feet bones!!! The cost of NOT having the best protection in a boot is enormous. Accidents happen anywhere, any time and at any speed; like mine in a car park doing a U-Turn.
So I’m literally feeling your full pain. What a shit, so sorry to hear that. How’s the recovery going? Can you walk? What’s your plan for protecting your foot on the bike? SG12s seem good but I don’t think they have any mid foot protection. I do hope you get better and can ride again and soon !
I too am recovering from the same injury with similar surgery ( yeah $40k and ++++ the lost work time, family member pain etc), 1-4 metatarsals and the 3 cuneiforms all smashed. I then broke my 5th met when I fell during my recovery at 6 months, what a set back. All together been 9months for me so far, what a journey. I just got my plates and screws out this week. Doc says another 6m and I’ll be able to walk properly and 12m full recovery. This is an absolute bitch of an injury.
Anyway I have been searching all over the place for a boot that has crush resistance in the mid foot protection, laterally and vertically, can’t find anything. You? The good ones have toe, ankle, shin heel etc but nothing solid for mid foot, seems an obvious thing to me and surprised they don’t exist. I can’t find any CZcams reports on this type of injury for bike riders and any related boot protection. Anyway Im thinking the SG-12s too. I’m also researching additional mid-foot protection. I’ll follow up and drop a note here if i find anything. All the very best in getting better; see you on the road. T

Sorry, but I Just don’t understand how you can recommend lace up work boots to beginners for riding a heavy adv bike off road? Foot and ankle injuries are the most common in this type of riding, especially for beginners and they are hell to recover from both physically and financially. If you don’t have the money for proper foot wear you either spent too much on the bike or you’re in the wrong sport. Every top rider I know and every off road instructor I’ve trained under says get the most protective boot you can tolerate, especially when you’re starting out. I can think of two slow speed crashes I had when I was learning that would have resulted in serious injuries if I was wearing work boots instead of the entry level MX boots I was convinced to buy when I was a beginner.

You never want steel toe caps.
Because this happened to people: They crash and their toes get bent up and the steel cap cuts their toes off when it is turned up and over due to a impact.
The Forma ADV boot is not for hard offroad ADV'ing. It is for those that want to walk a lot at sites, sites seeing, hiking,...and are not up standing on the footpegs all day long as the sole is too soft.
I like the lower model on a cruiser bike.
