How Christian Bale BECAME A Psychopath

  • If you know anything about Christian Bale you know that his preparation for a role is nothing short of extreme. Using a term called Method Acting, Christian Bale brought the character of Patrick Bateman to a whole new level for American Psycho. Without the amazing performance by Bale, American Psycho would not have the following it does today. Whether it's Christian Bale in American Psycho, Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, or even Jared Leto as The Joker, Method Acting is a tool used by only a few actors today but it seems to bring out the best in all of their performances.

      It's probably more to do with the fact that DiCaprio had a young female fan base so a mature role like this would be inappropriate for him at the time. This was Bale's first big role and wouldn't leave an impression on a bunch of tween girls. That's probably why Steinem was flexible on that stance.

    • @alexman378

      This is the drawback of the actor becoming too famous and popular. DiCaprio is one of those actors where, even though he’s excellent in his performances, you still see DiCaprio giving you a really good performance. We know who he is, how he thinks, what his lifestyle is, what he does, there’s not much mystery about him. It’s why many TV shows primarily look for unknown but talented actors to fill in the majority of the cast, with a couple of well known actors for credibility and marketing, they want audiences to see the character and not the actor. Bale is a strange case, because he is very well known, but he seemingly looses himself completely within roles, whether he’s playing a fat political puppeteer, a highly trained assassin, a narcissistic psychopath, or a moral and righteous superhero, he is so completely different where he can bypass that obstacle.

    • @numerum_bestia
      @numerum_bestia Před 2 lety +217

      I think it’s hilarious that the woman who talked DiCaprio out of the role did it because of the violence against women in the film.
      Like, brutally murdering a homeless man and stomping his dog to death was fine to her. But killing a woman was crossing a line 😂
      I hope she never watches Lars von Trier’s “The house that Jack built”. It would probably give her a heart attack. That movie doesn’t spare anyone. Old people, women, children and animals. I am fairly desensitised to violence, but I have to say it’s the only time that depictions of violence alone have genuinely made me feel uncomfortable during a film. (I say that because graphic depictions of sexual assaults in other films have made me feel uneasy, but this film managed to do so without crossing into that territory).

    It should be noted that what most non-actors these days call "method acting" has basically nothing to do with the actual Method. Method acting isn't about literally becoming your character and staying in character even when off-camera/-stage, it's about "behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances", as Lee Strasberg put it. That is why some actors give sub-par performances despite perpetually staying in character: Because they don't truly understand what the real Method even is.

    I've acted in several plays, and have experienced things similar to the sweating spoke of in the video. Especially with it being live, in the rare case someone sees you offstage (at least where I've worked), you HAVE to be in character. When you get attached to a character enough, you get to this point of empathy for them that you have to smack yourself a little to get away from them. It's the oddest experience, to feel so horribly upset or joyful over something that isn't even real. It's those feelings you feel and the mannerisms that come with it that truly make your character look real.

Pablo Schreiber's narration has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the book a big boost! It's been compared to catcher in the rye, but i think Ellis has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In 2001, lionsgate released this: American Psycho: uncut. The most accomplished adaptation. I think the undesputed best scene is the murder of Paul Allen. A scene so memorable most people probably don't listen to the commentary. But they should! Because it's not just about a homicidal psychopath brutally murdering people in cold blood, it's also a statement about the elite of society, and how they can essentially get away with murder! Method can get a bad rap, but for a lot of actors, becoming the character is the best way to embody them. There often isn't a need to go to the point of being the character 100% of the time (especially when you're on break), but for some shoots, staying in character could be essential for an entire shoot day to maintain an emotional state.

She didn't ask him to do that and I'm sure she was perfectly capable of getting to the emotional state she wanted for the scene in her own way.
